Ravagers are large hostile mobs that only spawn alongside illagers in raids. They attack players, adult villagers, wandering traders and iron golems by running at them and biting them. They can be briefly stunned by being blocked with a shield, but after recovering they will roar, damaging and knocking away all nearby entities.
Spawning[]
Raids[]
Ravagers spawn starting at wave 3 as part of a raid.
Java Edition[]
Unridden ravagers spawn at wave 3, a ravager ridden by a pillager spawns at wave 5, and a ravager ridden by a vindicator spawns at wave 7. A ravager ridden by an evoker also spawns at wave 7.
Bedrock Edition[]
Up to 5 ravagers spawn as part of a raid. Unridden ravagers spawn at waves 3 and 5, a ravager ridden by a pillager spawns at waves 5 and 7, and a ravager ridden by an evoker spawns at wave 7.
Ravagers can be summoned with riders by using spawn event commands. /summon ravager ~ ~ ~ minecraft:spawn_with_pillager_rider
.
Drops[]
Upon being killed, a ravager drops:
Ravagers, as well as piglin brutes, drop the most amount of experience orbs out of all non-boss entities.
Behavior[]
Ravagers are hostile toward players, iron golems, adult villagers, and wandering traders within a 32-block radius. They attack by ramming enemies with their head, dealing a knockback of 5 blocks. Ravagers also attack by opening and closing their mouths, similar to biting their target.
When ravagers see a villager and an iron golem together, they always prioritize villagers unless they are already attacking an iron golem.
They can also destroy certain block types by charging into them. In Java Edition, ravagers can only break leaves and crops. In Bedrock Edition, they can break leaves, all crops, any other non-tree plants, mushrooms, and turtle eggs. Here is the complete list:

Although ravagers are equipped with saddles, they cannot be ridden by the player. Ravagers will only naturally appear ridden by an illager. However, another mob can be allowed to ride a ravager using the /ride command.
In Bedrock Edition ravagers have delayed hits hit_delay_pct: 0.5. When set to 0.0, ravager hits wouldn't be delayed to match Java Edition.
When its bite attack is blocked by a shield, no damage is dealt and knockback is halved. A ravager also has a 50% chance to become stunned and unable to move or attack for 2 seconds. After this period, it will open its mouth and roar, dealing 6 damage and a knockback of 5 blocks to nearby entities. The roar knocks back nearby illagers without damaging them and has no effect on other ravagers (note that vexes and witches are not treated as illagers and will take both damage and knockback). Illagers that are knocked back by a ravager's roar can still take fall damage.
Ravagers do not attack pillagers who shoot at them by accident, and do not attack evokers when evoker fangs accidentally hit them. When a vindicator riding a ravager has been named "Johnny" it may attack the ravager while it is riding it, but the ravager does not attack the vindicator for any reason. When a ravager gets shot by a mob that battles with a projectile while it is attacking the player, the ravager first attempts to kill who shot it, then goes back to attacking the player once the deed is done. Any mob that doesn't battle with projectiles requires a ravagers to roar in order to aggro on it.
In Java Edition, a ravager who gets attacked by a mob (excluding illagers or goats) or player will alert other ravagers to target the attacker unless the ravager was killed in one hit.
Ravagers take 75% less of knockback, but they still float in water. A ravager being ridden dismounts its rider if it moves into water two blocks deep. Riders cannot mount ravagers again after being dismounted.
In Java Edition, any ravager can join a patrol if sufficiently near a patrol captain.

The chance of getting the fish drop is increased by 1% per level with Looting (for a maximum of 5.5% with Looting III), but the type of fish is not affected. ====Polar bears==== Polar bears have a 25% chance of dropping 0–2 raw salmon when killed. Splash potions are brewed by adding gunpowder to a normal potion, including uncraftable potions of luck and decay. === Natural generation === One splash potion of weakness can be found in a brewing stand inside an igloo basement. === Filling bottles === Using a glass bottle on a cauldron that contains splash potion turns it into a bottle of that splash potion, this also removes 1 of the cauldron's content.bedrock === Bartering === Piglins have a 1.74% chance of bartering a splash potion of Fire Resistance when given a gold ingot. Area of effect <!-- compatibility anchor --> == Usage == ===Brewing=== Lingering potions are brewed by adding dragon's breath to a splash potion. ===Using=== Splash potions are thrown by using them. On impact they explode, applying status effects to nearby entities. When thrown by the player, they have a range of 8 blocks if thrown at the best angle. The bottle is lost, unlike drinkable potions. Entities within an 8.25×8.25×4.25 cuboid centered on the thrown potion at impact and within 4 blocks euclidean distance of the thrown potion at impact are affected. Bedrock, splash potions' effects have only three-fourths of the duration of the drinkable form. Java, splash and drinkable forms have the same duration. If the potion directly collides with an entity, the entity gets the full duration and potency of the effect. Otherwise, the farther away the entity is from the center of the impact, the lesser the imbued effect. For instant effects (i.e. Healing or Harming), the potency of the effect reduces linearly from 100% on a direct hit to 0% at 4 blocks' distance. For other effects, the potency is unchanged, but the duration decreases linearly on the same scale (rounded to the nearest 1 second), with no effect being applied if the duration would be 1 second or less. === Splash water bottles === Splash water bottles have no effect on almost all entities, but they extinguish fire in the block hit and the four blocks horizontally surrounding it. A splash water bottle deals 1 damage to endermen, striders, snow golems, and blazes; however, endermen have a chance of teleporting away if hit with one. Splash water bottles can extinguish a burning entity. ==== Mud ==== Splash water bottles can be used on dirt, coarse dirt, or rooted dirt to turn it into mud. === Filling cauldrons === bedrock, using a splash potion on a cauldron adds one level of that potion to the cauldron. Attempting to add a splash potion to a cauldron with water, dyed water or a non-matching potion empties the cauldron and creates an explosion sound (but no actual explosion). === Uncraftable splash potion === java, the uncraftable potion is a splash potion with no effect that is unobtainable in regular gameplay. It is also available in potion and lingering potion forms, as well as for tipped arrows. It can be obtained in two distinct (though functionally identical) variants, using the following commands: {{cmd|give @s minecraft:splash_potion{Potion:"minecraft:empty"} }} or give @s minecraft:splash_potion . It is also obtained any time a potion has invalid or missing potion effect tags, and thus serves as a placeholder. {| class="wikitable" style="text-align: center;" data-description="Unused potions" ! Icon ! Name |- | ! Uncraftable Splash Potion |} == Custom effects == java, splash potions can be obtained with any status effect using give and the tag <code>CustomPotionEffects</code>, which is an array of effects for the potion. See Item format#Potion Effects for more information, and status effect for a list of effects and IDs. == Sounds == java:<br> Splash potions use the Friendly Creatures sound The saddle can be unequipped by removing it from Saddle the specific inventory slot. A carrot on a stick (for pigs) or a warped fungus on a stick (for striders) is required to direct these mobs. Using a saddle on one of these mobs equips them with the saddle, and, since they have no inventory, there is no way to retrieve the saddle without killing the mob. The compass points to spawn when viewed in any way, including as a dropped item, in a player's hand, in an inventory or the crafting table, or in an item frame. The direction the needle points to is relative to the player who is viewing it. When a compass in an item frame is rotated, the needle turns accordingly. In the Nether or the End, the compass' needle spins and points in random directions. The compass can be used on a lodestone, after which it is named lodestone compass by default and points to that lodestone as long as the compass is in the same dimension as the lodestone, but if the compass is taken to a different dimension, it spins randomly, as a normal compass would in the Nether or the End. If the lodestone is destroyed, it also spins randomly, even if the lodestone is replaced afterward. However, if a lodestone compass is placed in storage, the lodestone can be broken and replaced without the compass losing the attunement, as long as the compass remains in storage while the lodestone is missing. A lodestone compass appears enchanted, similar to the enchanted golden apple. Using setworldspawn to change the world spawn also changes where the compass points. === Crafting ingredient === Compass, Compass.gif === Anvil usage === === Trading === A single compass can be sold to a journeyman-level cartographer villager for 1 emerald.java A single compass can be sold to an expert-level cartographer villager for 1 emerald as their sixth trade.bedrock A compass is also part of the cost of explorer maps: * An ocean explorer map and/or a woodland explorer map can be bought from a journeyman-level cartographer for 12 emeralds and one compass, as part of their fifth trade.bedrock * java, apprentice-level cartographer villagers offer to sell an ocean explorer map for 13 emeralds and a compass, and journeyman-level cartographer villagers offer to sell a woodland explorer map for 14 emeralds and one compass. === Enchantments === A compass can receive the following enchantments: {|class="wikitable col-2-center col-3-right" |+ !Name !Max Level !Method |- |Curse of Vanishing |I |Anvil |- |} == Sounds == java: bedrock: == Data values == === ID === java: bedrock: === Item data === java: Player.dat format <div class="treeview"> * compound: The item's tag tag. </div> bedrock: : See Bedrock Edition level format/Item format. == Advancements == Country Lode == History == java alpha java beta java {{History||1.5|snap=13w02a| Compasses now, instead of splitting two textures, use the new animation feature included in texture packs. With a mob on a lead held by the player, using the lead on any type of fence (or wall) attaches the lead to it with a visible knot, tying the mob to it. To attach it to a wall on Bedrock Edition, the player must hold a lead in the main hand. Multiple leads may be attached to one fence post. A mob tied to a fence tends to stay within 5 blocks of the fence post. A lead is broken by pressing the use item control on the mob again, hitting the knot, or removing the attached fence post. Leads also break when hit by projectiles. Whenever a lead is removed or broken, it drops as an item at the location of the mob. However, it does not drop when unleashed in Creative mode.java A lead does not break if the attached animal dies. A lead can stretch a maximum of 10 blocks. If the mob is able to move towards the player or fence post, it does so. If not, or if the mob is moving very quickly away from the player, the lead breaks. When the player or the knot is more than 7 blocks above the ground, the mob being leashed becomes suspended. Most mobs that can be leashed can still be leashed even if attacking the player leashing them, and any attached leads do not break. Wolves cannot be leashed after becoming angry. Despite this, if they become angry while already leashed, the lead does not break, but it cannot be reattached when broken through other methods while the wolf is still angry. A lead attached to a hoglin breaks if it becomes a zoglin. A lead does not prevent mobs from despawning if they normally would despawn. When moving downwards and accelerating towards the ground, leashed mobs accumulate fall damage and take it if they hit the ground while still accelerating. When moving up or decelerating (such as when the lead is stretched to its limit), the fall distance is set to one block and the mob therefore does not take any fall damage if it touches the ground. If the player walks into and back out of a nether portal while holding a lead connected to a mob, the lead remains attached to the mob. However, if a mob attached to a lead walks into a nether portal, the lead breaks and drops as an item in the other dimension. A lead can be used to remove a mob from a boat without needing to break the boat, if the mob can normally be leashed. If a chunk unloads while containing a leashed mob (either by the player walking too far away, or traveling to another dimension via a portal), the lead breaks and drops as an item, leaving the mob free to wander around. == Sounds == Java: Bedrock: == Leash Knot == Leash knot is an entity created when the player right-clicks the fence while having a mob leashed. === Data values === ==== ID ==== java: bedrock: ==== Entity data ==== Leash knots have entity data that define various properties of the entity. java: Entity format bedrock: : See Bedrock Edition level format/Entity format. == Data values == === ID === java: bedrock: == Achievements == So I Got That Going for Me == Advancements == When the Squad Hops into Town == History == The history of a lot of mobs be leashed java {{History|||snap=23w16a|Lead no longer generates in suspicious sand in trail ruins.|Due to the split of the archaeological loot tables for the suspicious gravel within the trail ruins; Trivia[]
- When the ravager was first revealed at Minecon Earth 2018, it had the placeholder name of "illager beast", and kept this name for multiple snapshots and betas as Mojang listened for name suggestions from the community. In Java Edition 19w05a and Bedrock Edition beta 1.11.0.1, illager beasts were named ravagers, although "behemoth" was also considered.[3]
- Ravagers were mainly inspired by the manticore, particularly the version from Dungeons & Dragons.[4]
- Ravagers have a vaguely bovine appearance, and are jokingly described as "a spicy cow" on the Minecraft.net page.[4] However, they cannot be milked.
- Several ravager sounds are altered versions of the sounds of other mobs:
- The first and third ravager death sounds ( and ) are versions of the first pillager death sound () but lower pitched.
- The fourth ambient ravager sound () is the third evoker ambient sound () but lower pitched.
- The fifth ambient ravager sound () is the third villager "trade denial" sound () but lower pitched.
- The third stunned ravager sound () is the first zombie villager ambient sound () but slightly edited.
