Ravagers are large hostile mobs that only spawn alongside illagers in raids. They attack players, adult villagers, wandering traders and iron golems by running at them and biting them. They can be briefly stunned by being blocked with a shield, but after recovering they will roar, damaging and knocking away all nearby entities.
Spawning[]
Raids[]
Ravagers spawn starting at wave 3 as part of a raid.
Java Edition[]
Unridden ravagers spawn at wave 3, a ravager ridden by a pillager spawns at wave 5, and a ravager ridden by a vindicator spawns at wave 7. A ravager ridden by an evoker also spawns at wave 7.
Bedrock Edition[]
Up to 5 ravagers spawn as part of a raid. Unridden ravagers spawn at waves 3 and 5, a ravager ridden by a pillager spawns at waves 5 and 7, and a ravager ridden by an evoker spawns at wave 7.
Ravagers can be summoned with riders by using spawn event commands. /summon ravager ~ ~ ~ minecraft:spawn_with_pillager_rider
.
Drops[]
Upon being killed, a ravager drops:
Ravagers, as well as piglin brutes, drop the most amount of experience orbs out of all non-boss entities.
Behavior[]
Ravagers are hostile toward players, iron golems, adult villagers, and wandering traders within a 32-block radius. They attack by ramming enemies with their head, dealing a knockback of 5 blocks. Ravagers also attack by opening and closing their mouths, similar to biting their target.
When ravagers see a villager and an iron golem together, they always prioritize villagers unless they are already attacking an iron golem.
They can also destroy certain block types by charging into them. In Java Edition, ravagers can only break leaves and crops. In Bedrock Edition, they can break leaves, all crops, any other non-tree plants, mushrooms, and turtle eggs. Here is the complete list:

Although ravagers are equipped with saddles, they cannot be ridden by the player. Ravagers will only naturally appear ridden by an illager. However, another mob can be allowed to ride a ravager using the /ride command.
In Bedrock Edition ravagers have delayed hits hit_delay_pct: 0.5. When set to 0.0, ravager hits wouldn't be delayed to match Java Edition.
When its bite attack is blocked by a shield, no damage is dealt and knockback is halved. A ravager also has a 50% chance to become stunned and unable to move or attack for 2 seconds. After this period, it will open its mouth and roar, dealing 6 damage and a knockback of 5 blocks to nearby entities. The roar knocks back nearby illagers without damaging them and has no effect on other ravagers (note that vexes and witches are not treated as illagers and will take both damage and knockback). Illagers that are knocked back by a ravager's roar can still take fall damage.
Ravagers do not attack pillagers who shoot at them by accident, and do not attack evokers when evoker fangs accidentally hit them. When a vindicator riding a ravager has been named "Johnny" it may attack the ravager while it is riding it, but the ravager does not attack the vindicator for any reason. When a ravager gets shot by a mob that battles with a projectile while it is attacking the player, the ravager first attempts to kill who shot it, then goes back to attacking the player once the deed is done. Any mob that doesn't battle with projectiles requires a ravagers to roar in order to aggro on it.
In Java Edition, a ravager who gets attacked by a mob (excluding illagers or goats) or player will alert other ravagers to target the attacker unless the ravager was killed in one hit.
Ravagers take 75% less of knockback, but they still float in water. A ravager being ridden dismounts its rider if it moves into water two blocks deep. Riders cannot mount ravagers again after being dismounted.
In Java Edition, any ravager can join a patrol if sufficiently near a patrol captain.

By doing so it drops as an item and any other contents of the chest are dropped as well. ==Usage== Minecarts with chests can be placed by on any type of rail. Chest minecarts' contents can be accessed by pressing use item button on them. The interaction makes no sounds and the chest does not show the opening or closing animation, unlike regular chests. The boost that minecarts with chests gain from powered rails is dependent on their load. For example, from a 1 powered rail starter track, an empty minecart with chest travels 64 blocks, but a full minecart with chest travels only 16 blocks (opposed to 80 blocks for an occupied normal minecart and 8 blocks for an empty normal minecart). Another physical property of chest minecarts is their ability to be stacked. While three chests can fit in an area three blocks tall, up to four chest minecarts can fit in the same area. Like other minecarts, an unlimited number of minecarts with chests can exist in the same block space. Minecarts with chests are also able to interact with hoppers. Hoppers can take items out from the minecart chest if they are below the track as the minecart rolls over it or put them in if the minecart rolls under a downward facing hopper. The water is consumed in the process. Flowing water does not fill a bucket. Using an empty bucket on a cauldron filled with water (water level 3) empties the cauldron and fills the bucket. Water buckets can also be filled by placing an empty one in the fuel slot of a furnace, and a wet sponge into the oven slot. The bucket is filled when the smelting process completes, which also leaves the sponge dry and ready to be reused. === Chest Loot === water-bucket == Usage == Using a water bucket on a solid block places a water source block against that block, emptying the bucket; using a water bucket on a waterloggable block waterlogs the block. In the Nether, however, the water evaporates, making a fire extinguishing sound and displays smoke particles while nothing gets placed. === Dispensers === A dispenser can be loaded with a water bucket, and when activated it places a water block directly before it, emptying the bucket. A dispenser loaded with an empty bucket and a water source right in front of it draws the source into the bucket when activated. === Cauldrons === A single water bucket can fill a cauldron, and using an empty bucket on a water-filled cauldron fills the bucket. Empty buckets cannot be filled from partly-filled cauldrons. === Filling bucket with mobs === Water buckets can be used on a fish, axolotl or tadpole to create a bucket of aquatic mob. === Transportation === Tutorials/Elevators#Water elevators Water buckets can be used as a means of quickly descending great heights in the Overworld and the End, either by creating a waterfall or using the water bucket while falling to create a safe water landing. block|Suspicious Sand}} Suspicious stew is a food item that can give the player a status effect that depends on the flower used to craft it. == Obtaining == Bedrock, suspicious stew is the only food item in the game that can be obtained from the Creative inventory only by searching. However, it can be crafted and can also be found in shipwreck chests. Suspicious stew can be given with commands like give, but java, unless NBT data like that listed in the data values section is included, consuming it has no effect and still restores the same hunger points as a normal suspicious stew. In Bedrock Edition, giving the player a suspicious stew through commands causes the stew to choose an allowable status effect at random. === Harvesting === Suspicious stew can be obtained by "milking" a brown mooshroom with a bowl after using a small flower on it. When a small flower is used on a brown mooshroom, the brown mooshrom produces a suspicious stew related to that small flower the next time it is milked with a bowl. Red mooshrooms do not produce suspicious stew. The brown mooshroom returns to producing mushroom stew until fed another small flower. === Crafting === Suspicious stew is not listed in the recipe book. However, it can be quickly assembled by clicking the mushroom stew recipe and adding one small flower to it. === Chest loot === suspicious-stew === Mob loot === After being given a flower, a brown mooshroom can be "milked" for suspicious stew by using a bowl on it. The flower type determines the stew's effect using the same rule as a crafted stew. Milking a red mooshroom after feeding it a flower does not yield a suspicious stew specific to that flower. === Trading === java, expert-level farmer villagers can offer either 1 or 2 suspicious stew trades, each stew for one emerald. bedrock, expert-level farmer villager offers to sell suspicious stew for one emerald as well. The trading interface does not indicate the type of suspicious stew being sold, but each trade entry consistently yields the same type of stew, so the player can remember or make a note of the types offered by a given villager, such as "this villager's first stew gives blindness, and their second entry gives saturation". == Usage == === Food === Tutorials/Hunger management To eat suspicious stew, press and hold use while it is selected in the hotbar. Eating one restores 6 hunger and 7.2 hunger saturation and gives a few seconds of a status effect that varies depending on which flower was used to craft it. The effect is not displayed in the tooltip, texture, etc., meaning that the player cannot know in advance what the effect is without knowing which flower was used. The bowl is emptied and returned to the player after the suspicious stew has been eaten, and can be re-used to craft more stews. Unlike most foods, suspicious stew can be eaten even if the player's hunger bar is full. The Saturation effect effectively makes those two stews a superfood: In those 6 or 7 ticks it can restore up to 6(7) hunger and 12(14) saturation points on top of their food value, for a total of at least 12 hunger, and effectively maximizing saturation. This is the largest amount of hunger and saturation the player can get from a single food item. Regeneration can restore up to 3 health, and Poison or Wither can inflict up to 4 damage. Consuming suspicious stew is the only way to obtain the Saturation and Blindness effects in vanilla Minecraft without the use of commands. == Sounds == === Generic === It can be obtained either by NBT editors, inventory editors, or glitches in Bedrock Edition. To get the block form of the camera in Bedrock Edition using an NBT editor, you need to set the item name of the block in the inventory slot (
name:
) to
item.camera
, then you need to add a compound tag called
Block
and inside of that put the int tag
version: 18040335
and the text tag
name: minecraft:camera
into the block compound tag. For the usable "spawn egg" form of the camera, you only need to set the item name of the block in the inventory slot (
name:
) to
camera
; you do not need to add the block compound for this form of the camera. == Usage == Using a camera from the inventory captures a first-person screenshot. It can also be placed, creating a camera entity that can track the user, and take pictures from the camera's perspective. Photos that are taken using the camera appear in the portfolio. Close-up snapshots of an item on the ground can be taken by holding the Shift key while right-clicking. A player can, however, sleep in a bed being used by a villager. The villager reclaims the bed after the player wakes. The villager is kicked out of its bed when a player attempts to sleep there. Villagers always wake up on top of the bed, meaning they can suffocate if there isn't enough room above the bed. ====Passing the night==== Sleeping changes the time of day to sunrise and resets the weather cycle, changing the weather to clear conditions. JE, the weather cycle is only reset if it is currently raining or snowing. The player wakes up next to the bed, facing the bed. Sleeping does not accelerate processes that take place over time such as the growth of crops or smelting. If gamerule doDaylightCycle is
false
, the player instead wakes up in the night. To skip the night in multiplayer, all players in the Overworld must be in bed at the same time. Pressing the Leave Bed button is not necessary in this case. The percentage of players that need to sleep to skip the night can be customized with the game rule playersSleepingPercentage. Villagers are unable to skip the night by sleeping in beds, unlike players. If the bed is destroyed while the player is in it, due to for example an explosion or by another player, the player wakes prematurely and the night does not pass. ====Setting the spawn point==== Once a player has entered a bed (or right clicked the bed during daytime), their spawn point is set to the location of that bed. java, multiple players can set their spawn point on a single bed. bedrock, the last player to use a specific bed is the only player who can respawn there, and players who had previously slept there respawn at the world spawn. Using a bed in the daytime likewise sets the spawn point, without actually entering the bed. When a bed explodes, it does not set the spawn point. The message "Respawn point set" is displayed in chat when the respawn point is successfully changed. The check for a bed is made only when the player respawns. This means that the bed can be destroyed and replaced or even reoriented, but as long as there is a bed present in the same location, the player can respawn there. If a player's bed is absent, or if the area around the bed is made unsuitable for respawning (see below), a message is displayed saying You have no home bed or charged respawn anchor, or it was obstructedje/Your home bed was missing or obstructedbe, and the player respawns at the world spawn point. When choosing where to respawn the player, the northwesternmost (lowest X- and Z-coordinates) location of the seven blocks adjacent to the head of the bed is chosen first. If this location is obstructed, the next choice is to its south (+Z), rather than the east (+X). Only when all seven locations around the head are obstructed are the three remaining ones adjacent to the foot then to be considered. For a location to be unobstructed, the block at the level of the bed must be air or non-solid (e.g. torches, but not glass) and there must be a space with a solid block below it and two non-colliding blocks for the player to stand in 0-2 blocks below the bed. It does not matter if the bed itself has blocks above it. Putting a slab one block above a bed can act as a two block tall space, as the bed is half a block tall. The bed never spawns the player on or directly below itself even if all other locations are obstructed. If a bed is obstructed, the player's spawn point is cleared after they respawn. That is, even if the bed is subsequently made usable again, the player continues to respawn at the world spawn until interacting with the bed again. Specifically, when interacting with it, the location of the head of the bed is saved as the spawn point, and if a bed is in that space (whether it is the foot or the head) then the respawn works. This can be observed by reorienting the bed with its head in the same location. Interacting with it does not produce a "Respawn point set" message as the game doesn't change the saved spawn point. If a bed is reoriented so that its foot is in this space, it still functions on the next respawn, but it can also be interacted with to update the spawn point to the new head of the bed and cause a "Respawn point set" message. Attempting the reverse, reorienting the bed so that it overlaps the original location of the foot, results in a respawn at world spawn. However, the location of the foot of the bed is also saved. If the bed is moved so that part of it overlaps the original location of the head, it can be observed that the same locations need to be obstructed to stop spawning. It is possible to respawn 2 blocks away from the bed this way. === Bouncing=== Falling onto a bed bounces the player with 66% strength – the bouncing-up velocity is 66% of the impact velocity. The player also takes 50% of normal fall damage. Baby villagers bounce on beds during the day. If the player is falling while sleeping requirements are met, and presses use on a bed within reach before hitting the ground, the fall damage is delayed until the player wakes. A player can bounce on a bed while another player or villager is sleeping on it without waking the player or the villager up. Villagers can be pushed onto beds, as the bed is half a block tall. === Curing=== Each bed in the vicinity of a zombie villager has a chance to speed up the process of curing the zombie villager. Iron bars (such as in a prison cell) also have this effect. === Placement=== Beds require two blocks of floor space. Placement requires at least 2 blocks from the player's facing direction. When placed, the foot of the bed is placed on the block selected and the head of the bed on the block farther away from the player. bedrock, beds require solid blocks below them when placed. However, the bed remains in place if its supporting blocks are later removed. java, beds do not require supporting blocks and can be placed anywhere, provided there is enough room. ==Sounds == ===Generic=== ===Unique=== java: bedrock: ==Data values== ===ID=== java: bedrock: ===Metadata=== Data values be, bed items use the following data values: ===Block states=== Block states ===Block data=== A bed has a block entity associated with it that holds additional data about the block. java: Block entity format bedrock: : See Bedrock Edition level format/Block entity format. ==Advancements== Sweet Dreams ==History== For a more in-depth breakdown of changes to textures and models, including a set of renders for each state combination, see history java beta {{History||1.4|Sleeping in a bed now resets the player's spawn position, though it does not work for most users. An ore drops a single diamond. If mined by any other tool, it drops nothing. If the pickaxe is enchanted with Fortune, it can drop an extra diamond per level of Fortune, allowing for a maximum of 4 diamonds with Fortune III. If the ore is mined using a pickaxe enchanted with Silk Touch, it drops an ore block rather than a diamond. The ore is found at level 15 or lower, most commonly between -50 and -64; levels -58 and -59 are the preferred levels to mine at since they don't contain bedrock, as it starts spawning at -60. === Chest loot === diamond === Suspicious sand === When brushing suspicious sand in desert pyramids, they have a 1 chance to drop a diamond. === Crafting === === Smelting === == Usage == Diamonds are mainly used to craft high-tier armor and equipment, which in turn are also used in making netherite armor and equipment. === Crafting ingredient === crafting usage === Trading === bedrock, expert-level armorer, toolsmith, and weaponsmith villagers buy one diamond for an emerald as part of their trades. java, journeyman-level armorer villagers have a 40% chance of offering to buy one diamond for one emerald. Trivia[]
- When the ravager was first revealed at Minecon Earth 2018, it had the placeholder name of "illager beast", and kept this name for multiple snapshots and betas as Mojang listened for name suggestions from the community. In Java Edition 19w05a and Bedrock Edition beta 1.11.0.1, illager beasts were named ravagers, although "behemoth" was also considered.[3]
- Ravagers were mainly inspired by the manticore, particularly the version from Dungeons & Dragons.[4]
- Ravagers have a vaguely bovine appearance, and are jokingly described as "a spicy cow" on the Minecraft.net page.[4] However, they cannot be milked.
- Several ravager sounds are altered versions of the sounds of other mobs:
- The first and third ravager death sounds ( and ) are versions of the first pillager death sound () but lower pitched.
- The fourth ambient ravager sound () is the third evoker ambient sound () but lower pitched.
- The fifth ambient ravager sound () is the third villager "trade denial" sound () but lower pitched.
- The third stunned ravager sound () is the first zombie villager ambient sound () but slightly edited.
