Feathers were added during the 0.31 Indev phase of Minecraft’s development. They were originally dropped by every mob, and could only be used to make arrows. Shortly afterwards, they were patched to only drop from zombies, and then from chickens, but it was a while until zombies started dropping rotten flesh instead, and chickens became the only source of feathers.

Duncan Geere[1]

Feathers are items dropped by chickens and parrots, as well as tamed cats as gifts.

Obtaining[edit]

Drops[edit]

Adult chickens drop 0–2 feathers upon death. The maximum is increased by 1 per level of Looting, for a maximum of 0-5 with Looting III.

Parrots drop 1–2 feathers upon death. The maximum is increased by 1 per level of Looting, for a maximum of 1-5 with Looting III.

Foxes that are holding a feather also have a 8.5%‌‌[JE only]/100%‌‌[BE only] chance to drop the feather upon death. Alternatively, player can drop a food item, causing the fox to drop the feather.

Natural generation[edit]

Feathers can be found in 12.1% of plains village house chests in stacks of 1, in 55.8% of village fletcher chests in stacks of 1–3, and in 60.0% of shipwreck map chests in stacks of 1–5.

Gift[edit]

Tamed cats have a 16.13% chance of giving the player feathers as a gift.

Usage[edit]

While a feather cannot be equipped in the head slot in Survival mode, equipping it using commands causes it to appear completely upright unlike other items.
