Duncan Geere Mojang avatar.png Feathers were added during the 0.31 Indev phase of Minecraft’s development. They were originally dropped by every mob, and could only be used to make arrows. Shortly afterwards, they were patched to only drop from zombies, and then from chickens, but it was a while until zombies started dropping rotten flesh instead, and chickens became the only source of feathers.

Drops[edit]

Feathers are obtained from killing chickens and parrots. Chickens drop 0–2 feathers, and parrots drop 1–2 feathers upon death.

Natural generation[edit]

Feathers can be found in 60.0% of shipwreck map chests in stacks of 1–5. Feathers can be found inside plains village house chests.‌[upcoming: BE 1.10] Feather can also be found in village fletcher chests.‌[upcoming: BE 1.11]

Gift[edit]

Tamed cats have a chance of giving the player feathers as a gift.‌[upcoming: JE 1.14]

Usage[edit]

Feathers are used to make arrows. They are also used to make a book and quill and firework star effect (Burst explosion).

Up to eight dyes can be added.
Up to one of any head, a gold nugget, a feather, or a fire charge can be added.
Both the diamond and the glowstone dust can be added with any of the other ingredients.

0.31 (January 30, 2010) Added feathers. They can be used to craft arrows and are dropped by every mob in quantities of 0 to 2.
February 6, 2010 The feather's texture has now been changed; it is now not as straight anymore.
February 19, 2010 Zombies are now the only mob that can drop feathers. Notch has stated he currently doesn't know what else they should drop.[2]
Java Edition Alpha
v1.0.14 The Chicken will now drop 0 to 2 feathers upon death.
Java Edition Beta
1.8 Pre-release Zombies will now drop rotten flesh, instead of feathers. The reason zombies used to drop feathers was because feathers were used as a placeholder (before chickens were implemented in the game). It stayed this way because Notch did not know what exactly zombies would drop.
Chickens are now the only source of feathers.
Java Edition
