An end crystal is both an item and an entity found in the End.

Natural generation[edit]

End crystals are found atop the many obsidian pillars in the End. Sometimes the end crystals are surrounded in "cages" of iron bars. All end crystals will respawn one by one immediately before respawning the ender dragon.

Healing the ender dragon[edit]

Their primary purpose is to recharge the health of the ender dragon, who will charge from the nearest crystal within a cuboid extending 32 blocks from the dragon in all directions. The dragon is healed 1Half Heart.svg each half-second. If multiple ender dragons are spawned, an end crystal can affect multiple dragons at the same time. The healing beam is neither obstructed nor is its power diminished by entities or blocks.

Respawning the ender dragon[edit]

How to arrange end crystals on the exit portal to respawn the ender dragon.

As items, end crystals may be placed on bedrock and obsidian, if the two blocks above the bedrock or obsidian block are air or replaceable blocks and no other entities intersect the area. If four are placed on the end exit portal, one on each of the flat sides, the crystals will respawn the original end crystals on the obsidian pillars, as well as resurrect the dragon itself, before exploding. The top of each pillar will appear to explode, destroying any player-placed blocks.

The end crystal can also be used as an explosive with the unique property of making all crystals near it explode at the same time, which can be used to quickly (after placing the crystals) blow up large areas or as an unusual trap mechanism.

When attacked, even by attacks that normally do zero damage, or otherwise damaged in any way, they will explode. The end crystal's explosion is the same power as a charged creeper, 50% more powerful than TNT. Any ender dragon charging from the crystal when it is destroyed will take 10Heart.svgHeart.svgHeart.svgHeart.svgHeart.svg damage.

The end crystal will naturally shoot a beam at the ender dragon and heal it when the dragon is within range. This beam can be manually created using the command /data merge entity @e[type=end_crystal,limit=1] {BeamTarget:{X:0, Y:0, Z:0}}

A slateless end crystal.

The base appears to be made of bedrock, with a crystal hovering over it. While in the End, a crystal will continually generate fire at its current position, one block above the base (directly on top of the block the base is embedded in), replacing any other block at that location. This fire is not capable of spreading. The end crystal entity is not solid and can be walked through freely. An ender dragon cannot destroy the crystal simply by going near it. Cannot be destroyed by a firework explosion, shot from a crossbow or launched.

End crystals can be pushed by pistons, but if they are moved while in live fire they will explode.

Entity data[edit]

End crystals have entity data which defines various properties of the entity.

  • Entity data
    • Tags common to all entities see Template:Nbt inherit/entity/template
    •  ShowBottom: 1 or 0 (true/false) – if true, EnderCrystal will show the bedrock slate underneath. Defaults to false when placing by hand and true using /summon.
    •  BeamTarget: The block location its beam will point to.
      •  X: X-coordinate.
      •  Y: Y-coordinate.
      •  Z: Z-coordinate.

Java Edition
1.0.0Beta 1.9 Prerelease 6Added end crystals, originally named ender crystal.
1.2.112w04aPreviously, end crystals could be spawned using spawn eggs with ID 200 (in a server, these were created using /give 383 1 200). The spawned crystal would be positioned where a natural crystal would be if there was a bedrock block at the location. It was still possible until 1.9 to obtain an end crystal spawn egg, but it would not spawn anything.
1.7.213w36aEnd crystals can now be spawned with the /summon command.
1.814w06aEnd crystals now generate one block lower. The fire they generate destroys the bedrock block that is supposed to be underneath (see MC-47526).
1.915w31aEnd crystals generate at the correct Y-level again.
15w33cRespawning the ender dragon will also respawn the crystals on the pillars.
End crystals now have a compound BeamTarget tag that hold the X, Y, Z block location the beam will point to.
15w44aEnd Crystal (item) Revision 1.png It can now be obtained as an item, and renamed end crystal, that drops from skeleton trap horses, that can only be placed on obsidian or bedrock. Placing several of them atop the end exit portal will respawn the Ender Dragon.
15w44bEnd crystals are no longer dropped by undead horses.
Added crafting recipe for end crystals.
15w49aNow require air/replaceable blocks and lack of entities for placement.
1.1116w32aThe entity ID is changed from EnderCrystal to ender_crystal.
1.1317w47aPrior to The Flattening, this item's numeral ID was 426.

Issues relating to "End Crystal" are maintained on the bug tracker. Report issues there.

  • According to Jeb, the reason behind the current crafting recipe using glass as opposed to chorus fruit or any materials introduced in 1.9 is as a means for players to craft end crystals in older worlds that the dragon has already been killed in. [1]
  • Placing water above an end crystal using a bucket will cause a looping effect, where the fire is continuously put out and reinitialized as the water attempts to flow down and is stopped. The water will not spread, as it can flow downward, but is prevented by the reoccurring fire instantly taking its place.
  • Unlike the similarly-explosive TNT, normally hitting an end crystal will make it explode. However, they can be removed safely if they're immersed in water first.
  • Since fire is only checked when an entity moves, end crystals do not normally take damage from their own fire.
  • Oftentimes, the fire will stay after an end crystal blows up.
  • A historical rendition of the beacon block featured an animated entity within it, which resembled a yellow miniaturized end crystal. The bedrock platform of the end crystal entity would also render below the beacon, though this would normally be hidden within the block below.
  • On hard mode, End Crystals are actually far superior to any weapon due to increased explosive damage. Withers and the Ender Dragon become incredibly easy to kill, and even players geared with fully enchanted diamond armor can be killed instantly with a single well placed Crystal.
