Revision as of 12:56, 5 December 2020

Dolphins are neutral mobs that live in non-frozen oceans and grant a speed boost to players that swim near them.

Spawning

Dolphins are found in groups (pods) of 3-5 in all ocean biomes, except frozen oceans and cold oceans. In Java Edition, they spawn between (exclusively) level 45 and the sea level of the world. Dolphins continuously spawn as long as their spawn requirements are met, similar to squid.

10% of dolphins spawn as babies.‌[Bedrock Edition only]

Drops

When killed, dolphins drop 0–1 raw cod (cooked cod if on fire). The maximum amount is increased by 1 per level of Looting, for a maximum of 0-4 with Looting III. 1–3 are dropped as well.‌[Java Edition only]

Behavior

DolphinJumping

Dolphins jumping in water.

Dolphins normally swim in pods, occasionally leaping out of the water to get air. They are also able to jump from one body of water to another. They also chase after players in boats.

Players who sprint swim within about 9 blocks of a dolphin receive Dolphin's Grace for 5 seconds‌[JE only]. Players with Invisibility do not receive the effect unless they already had Dolphin's Grace before receiving Invisibility, or if they are wearing armor. In Bedrock Edition, the player simply gets a speed boost without a status effect.

Dolphins are lured by dropped items that are inside nearby water blocks, knocking them around and chasing them in Java Edition. If the dolphin can not find a path to a dropped item, the dolphin may stay underwater to the point of drowning. If the dolphin is in, or on, a waterlogged bottom slab or chest with an air block above, the dolphin is prevented from drowning.

If the player or other mob hits a dolphin, the whole pod retaliates, attacking all at once similar to wolves and zombified piglins.

Feeding dolphins raw cod or raw salmon improves their "trust" and interactions with the player, depending on the amount of fish fed.

When dolphins are fed raw cod or raw salmon, they swim to the nearest shipwreck, buried treasure or ocean ruins. Because they are locating the chest in the structures rather than the structures themselves, breaking the chests causes the dolphin to locate a new structure with intact chests. Dolphins also avoid guardians and elder guardians.

Weaknesses

If a dolphin leaves the water, it starts taking suffocation damage after two minutes, and eventually dies, like squid. A dolphin on land actively seeks out a body of water.

They cannot survive without getting air every once in a while, so if they stay submerged for about four minutes they begin drowning. The water breathing effect prevents them from drowning.

Dolphins cannot ride boats, similarly to squid and all types of fish.

Dolphins can be towed by a lead.

Because the dolphin is an aquatic mob, they are affected by the Impaling enchantment.‌[Java Edition only]

A totem of undying is an uncommon combat item that can save holders from death. It is dropped by evokers, which spawn in woodland mansions and raids.

Obtaining
Mob loot
Evokers always drop one totem of undying upon death. The drop rate is not affected by Looting.

Usage
If the player is holding a totem of undying in their off-hand or main-hand slot and receives otherwise fatal damage, the totem saves the player from death. The totem of undying must be in the player's hand (main hand or offhand) for it to work—it does not work if it is in the hotbar, unless selected. Any mob that can hold a totem of undying (in a hand or in the mouth) can use it while holding it.JE The totem can be used only once; it disappears after use. It does not save the player from death caused by void damage, the kill commands or even a tipped arrow with harming effect damage.

Effect
When activated, the totem of undying restores 1, removes all existing status effects, then grants 40 or 45 seconds of Regeneration II, 40 seconds of Fire Resistance I and 5 seconds of Absorption II. An animation shows the totem of undying appearing to hover in front of the player's screen, similar to the animation seen when a player receives the Bad Omen or Hero of the Village effect or encounters an elder guardian. When killed by an Instant Damage tipped arrow, the arrow's instant damage takes effect after the totem has been activated.

The totem of undying also works in Hardcore mode.

A knowledge book is a utility item that reveals available crafting recipes to the player when used.

Obtaining
Knowledge books can be obtained only by using commands, as it is not found in the creative inventory; therefore, it is impossible to obtain in other modes such as survival and adventure except with commands.

For example, to give oneself a knowledge book that reveals the recipes for buckets and flower pots, use: {{cmd|give @s minecraft:knowledge_book{Recipes:["minecraft:bucket", "minecraft:flower_pot"]} }}.

Usage
Knowledge books are used to reveal recipes to the player who uses it, by adding it to their recipe book. Using a knowledge book consumes it, removing it from the player's inventory.

Knowledge books are especially useful to mapmakers in conjunction with gamerule doLimitedCrafting true, because then any item is craftable only if its recipe is unlocked first.

Trivia
* In real life, lapis lazuli is a blue gem that can be ground and processed into ultramarine pigment. Lapis lazuli pigment has been famously used in the production of illuminated manuscripts, stained glass, and cave paintings. See the Wikipedia article for more information.
* Lapis lazuli is the only ore that can be used as a dye or making a dye.
* It is the only item that can be put in the second slot of an enchantment table.

Compounds are a type of item from Education Edition used in chemistry, which are created from combinations of various elements.

Obtaining
Compounds cannot be obtained in the Creative inventory. They are only obtained from creating them in the compound creator. This is done by inserting a certain number of elements corresponding to the compound's chemical formula.

Garbage
Garbage is considered a "compound", but the only way to produce it is to activate the Lab Table when its inputs are an invalid recipe. It has no uses.

Usage
Certain compounds are used as ingredients in crafting or lab table experiments. Natural compounds have uses outside of chemistry, detailed in their respective articles.

Unused compound textures
In the chemistry resource pack folder, there are numerous compound textures which are not used in the game. Note: a <code>compound</code> item with a data value of <code>38</code> will have the <code>Blue Flask</code> texture and will be called <code>item.compound..name</code>. If you use an NBT Editor to get a compound item with no assigned data value (by deleting the data tag) and then transfer that item to another world / realm using structure blocks (by exporting to a <code>.mcstructure</code> file, then importing it on another world or realm) then it will be renamed to <code>Ivory Tusk</code>.

A beetroot is a food and dye ingredient.

Obtaining
Farming
Beetroots are obtained from harvesting a fully grown crop block, which drops 1 beetroot and 1-4 seeds (2 seeds per plant harvested on average). Seed yield can be increased using a tool enchanted with Fortune, with Fortune III harvesting an average of 5 seeds per plant.

These crops can be found growing in villages or can be grown from planted beetroot seeds.<!-- Do not add locations for finding seeds. Where to find seeds is described in the article about the seeds. -->

Usage
Food
A beetroot can be eaten to restore 1 hunger and 1.2 hunger saturation. Six beetroots can be crafted into beetroot soup, which restores six times the hunger and saturation of a single beetroot.

Crafting ingredient
crafting usage

Breeding
Beetroots can be used to breed pigs. Pigs also follow a player who is holding beetroot.

Villagers can pick up beetroot items to become willing, allowing them to breed. Villagers need 12 beetroots before they can breed.

Composting
Placing beetroot into a composter has a 65% chance of raising the compost level by 1.

Trading
Novice-level Farmer villagers have a 25%bedrock or 40%java chance to buy 15 beetroots for an emerald.

A brewing stand is a block used for brewing potions using bottles and suitable ingredients. It also serves as a cleric's job site block.

Obtaining
Breaking
A brewing stand can be obtained using any pickaxe. If mined without a pickaxe, it drops nothing JE, while it drops itself BE.

Natural generation
Brewing stands generate in end ships. They have two Instant Health II potions in their holders.

A brewing stand also generates in the basement of igloos with a splash potion of Weakness in it.

Brewing stands can generate without potions in village churches.

Usage
By default, the interface of a brewing stand is labeled "Brewing Stand", but this name can be customized by naming it in an anvil before placing it.

Brewing stands cannot be pushed by pistons java.

Brewing
Brewing
The main purpose of brewing stands is to allow for the brewing of potions. Its interface can be opened by pressing use on them.

Brewing stands need blaze powder as fuel. Each piece brews 20 batches of potions, with each stage of brewing counting separately. Unlike furnaces, there is no time limit; fuel is consumed only when there are bottles and an ingredient to brew into it.

Brewing stands interact with hoppers as follows:

* They accept brewing ingredients from hoppers pointing down into the top.
* Any valid potion recipe can be preloaded for "hands-free" brewing of a complex recipe, with the nether wart falling through into the stand for the first step.
* Bottles and fuel are accepted from hoppers pointing into the side.
* Finished products can be pulled out by hoppers below, but each stage of brewing counts as a batch of "finished" potions.

education, elements can be combined in the brewing stand to make the medicine potions: antidote, elixir, eye drops, and tonic.

Changing profession
If a village has a brewing stand that has not been claimed by a villager, any villager who hasn't already picked a job site block in the village has a chance to change their profession into cleric.

Light source
Brewing stands emit a light level of 1.

Issues
issue list

Trivia
* Even when the brewing stand is not in use, there is still smoke coming out of the top of it.
* In Java Edition, when a brewing stand is broken, particles from a bottle appear, even if no bottle is in the stand.
* No matter what potion (including water bottles) is in the stand it always looks like a full red bottle.
* Brewing stands always face east, no matter what direction they are placed.
* According to Searge, for thematic reasons, a brewing stand was added to the basement of the igloo. Because of this, blaze powder was required for fuel to preserve game progression. In this way, the player is prevented from using it before going to the Nether.

Bottles of entity are items that transform players into the respective mobs when drunk.

Splash bottle of entity are a variation of bottles of mob that can be thrown.

Bottle of void is a special bottle to transform back to the original player. Right clicking with it on a transformed player will remove the transformation and convert the bottle into a bottle of entity of that transformation.

A transformation into an entity will sometimes lead to special effects. For example, transforming into a chicken will allow the player to glide slowly to the ground. The chicken will however take fall damage upon landing, killing it and transforming the player back to themselves.
Transforming into an enderman will cause the player to be teleported randomly when a projectile it aimed at it or when they're being looked at by other players. Transforming into any mob capable of flight (for example, a bat) will allow the player to fly in survival mode as if they were in creative mode.

Usage
Empty buckets can be used to "pick up" a water or lava source block by pressing use item on a block of the relevant type. If the empty bucket is part of a stack and the player's inventory is full, the filled bucket drops in front of the player as an item.

A bucket filled with a source block can then be used to place its source block contents in the empty block next to the side of the block the player is currently looking at, or replacing the block looked at for some replaceable blocks.

One can press use when looking at a cow, mooshroom, or goat to fill a bucket with milk. A bucket full of milk can be emptied only by drinking it or by using it in crafting a recipe (like cake).

A bucket full of water can be used on a live aquatic mob (cod, salmon, tropical fish, pufferfish, axolotl, or tadpole) to collect the mob in the bucket for transportation to another location. The mob in item form becomes a bucket of aquatic mob.

An empty bucket can be used to empty a cauldron with water or lava, filling the bucket with the fluid. This does not work with dispensers.

A lava bucket placed in the fuel slot of a furnace becomes an empty bucket after the lava is consumed during smelting.

An empty bucket fills with water when placed in the fuel slot of a furnace while smelting a wet sponge.

An empty bucket can be used to collect powder snow, filling the bucket with powder snow. Emptying the powder snow bucket places the powder snow block in the empty block next to the side of the block the player is currently looking at.

Trivia

  • To create the sounds that the dolphins make in the game, Mojang's lead sound designer, Samuel Åberg, went to Kolmården Wildlife Park to record real dolphins.[4]
    • This was also done with pandas.
  • If a dolphin is beached on land and in a hostile state, it moves slowly toward its target.
  • Dolphins originally had a separate head and body when shown in a clip at MINECON 2017. It is also shown in artwork for Java Edition 1.13.
  • Baby dolphins are exclusive to Bedrock Edition.
  • Dolphins that are hostile towards the player don't become friendly if the dolphin is fed fish.
  • The fact that dolphins in Minecraft suffocate out of water is inaccurate; real-life dolphins breathe air like all mammals, although they can die of dehydration out of water.
