Skeleton Golden

Mobs in full armor are a common sight in higher difficulty levels.

Difficulty is an option in Minecraft that has a direct impact on the ease of gameplay, allowing the game's challenges to be tailored to the player's skill level.

World settings

DifficultyButton

There are four difficulty levels in the game: Peaceful, Easy, Normal and Hard. These can be changed when creating a world, in the settings, as well as with the /difficulty command.

Peaceful

No hostile mobs can spawn naturally, except for evokers[Bedrock Edition only], shulkers, hoglins, zoglins[Bedrock Edition only], piglins, piglin brutes[Bedrock Edition only], and the ender dragon. Even though evokers can spawn in peaceful, they do not summon vexes. Of these mobs, only the Ender Dragon can deal damage to the player. No spiders, cave spiders, zombified piglins or endermenneutral rather than hostile mobs – can spawn naturally. When any of these mobs attempt to spawn (whether naturally, through mob spawners, spawn eggs, or commands), they are removed from the game instantaneously. When the difficulty is switched from any other setting to Peaceful, all mobs that are not allowed to spawn on Peaceful are removed from the world. Players regain health rapidly over time. Despite this, it is still possible to die if damage is received quickly enough. TNT deals no direct damage to the player, but it does give knockback still, meaning a player can be killed by it if it launches them too far upward. The hunger bar never depletes; in Java Edition, players therefore cannot eat anything except golden apples, chorus fruits, and milk buckets, unless the player switched to Peaceful when their hunger bar was below the maximum. Players can eat normally in Bedrock Edition. Additionally, if the hunger bar is below the maximum, it regenerates quickly.

It is, for the most part, currently impossible to complete Minecraft while playing on Peaceful, because The End cannot be accessed unless a seed with the End Portal already filled in is used, or by trading with villagers for eyes of ender in pre-1.9. Blaze rods are for the most part required to activate the End Portal, and due to the fact that eyes of ender have a 10% chance of already existing in each of the end portal frame blocks, and the only way to obtain blaze rods to make the eyes of ender is directly from a blaze, there is only a 1 in a trillion chance that the portal is activated without any player intervention. Not all achievements can be completed in peaceful difficulty.

Easy

Hostile mobs spawn, but they deal less damage than on Normal difficulty. The hunger bar can deplete, damaging the player until they are left with 10♥♥♥♥♥ if it drains completely. Cave spiders and bees cannot poison players on Easy difficulty, and the wither does not cause the Wither effect, although wither skeletons do. Lightning sets only the struck block on fire, not surrounding blocks. Zombies do not break down doors, and do not turn villagers into zombie villagers. Zombies and skeletons rarely wear full sets of armor. Hostile mobs like zombies, skeletons, spiders, husks and strays deal about 1♥ or 2♥ damage.

Normal

Hostile mobs spawn and deal standard damage, about 2♥ or 3♥♥. The hunger bar can deplete, damaging the player until they are left with with 1♥ if it drains completely. Zombies do not break down doors, but villagers killed by zombies have a 50% chance of turning into zombie villagers. Zombies and skeletons rarely wear sets of enchanted armor. Vindicators can break doors.

Hard

Hostile mobs deal more damage than on Normal difficulty. The hunger bar can deplete, damaging the player until they die if it drains completely. Zombies can break through wooden doors and can spawn reinforcements when attacked. Spiders can spawn with a beneficial status effect (speed, strength, regeneration & invisibility), with these effects having an infinite duration in Java Edition. Villagers killed by zombies always turn into zombie villagers. Pillagers spawn near the player, with their attacks dealing 4♥♥ damage. In Bedrock Edition, if the world type is infinite, they deal 5♥♥♥ damage.

Hardcore mode‌[Java Edition only]

Main article: Hardcore

Hardcore Heart At the world creation screen, selecting Hardcore from among the game mode options causes the player to spawn in Hard difficulty, does not allow it to be changed, and allows the player only one life. In a single player world, if the player dies, they can choose to respawn in Spectator mode or delete the world. In multiplayer, the player's gamemode is automatically set to Spectator mode upon their death.

The only way to change the difficulty of Hardcore is to use the Open to LAN feature in the pause menu to enable commands, or to use an .NBT editor on the world's .NBT file.

Currently not available in Realms.

Moon phase

The phase of the moon has effects on the spawning of slimes in swamp biomes, and contributes to the calculation of regional difficulty. The fuller the moon is, the greater the effect.

The moon does not actually have to be in the sky for this effect to take place, since the moon exists in daytime and across dimensions.

Moon phase Value Percentage
Full 1.0 100%
Gibbous 0.75 75%
Quarter 0.5 50%
Crescent 0.25 25%
New 0.0 0%

Regional difficulty

Local Difficulty Debug

Regional difficulty values shown on the debug screen

Regional difficulty or local difficulty is a value between 0.00 and 6.75 that the game calculates by considering not just the world difficulty setting, but also the inhabited time of a chunk, the total daytime in the world, and the phase of the moon. This value is shown on the debug screen as the first value listed after the heading "Local Difficulty". This value determines several aspects of the difficulty of gameplay (see below).

The inhabited time of a chunk increases for each tick a player spends with the chunk loaded. This is a cumulative measure of time—if 50 players spend a single hour in a chunk, it counts the same as if one player spent 50 hours there. The effect of inhabited time on regional difficulty is capped at 50 hours.

The total daytime in the world is the value from /time query daytime added to the "Day" on the F3 debug screen converted to ticks, i.e. daytime + (dayNumber * 24,000). This is not the same as the actual playtime in the world (the value from /time query gametime). It affects the regional difficulty after the first 3 in-game days, and has no additional effect after 63 in-game days.

In pseudocode, the calculation of regional difficulty is:

# DaytimeFactor, ChunkFactor, and RegionalDifficulty are floating-point variables
# MoonPhase is as in the table above.

if (difficulty is Peaceful) return 0

if (TotalDaytime > 63 in-game days) DaytimeFactor = 0.25
else if (TotalDaytime < 3 in-game days) DaytimeFactor = 0
else DaytimeFactor = (TotalDaytimeInTicks − 72,000) / 5,760,000

if (ChunkInhabitedTime > 50 hours) ChunkFactor = 1
else ChunkFactor = ChunkInhabitedTimeInTicks / 3,600,000

if (difficulty is Normal or Easy) multiply ChunkFactor by 0.75

if (MoonPhase ÷ 4 > DaytimeFactor) add DaytimeFactor to ChunkFactor
else add (MoonPhase ÷ 4) to ChunkFactor

if (difficulty is Easy) multiply ChunkFactor by 0.5

RegionalDifficulty = 0.75 + DaytimeFactor + ChunkFactor

if (difficulty is Normal) multiply RegionalDifficulty by 2
if (difficulty is Hard) multiply RegionalDifficulty by 3

return RegionalDifficulty

The raw regional difficulty therefore is always 0.0 on Peaceful and ranges from 0.75 to 1.5 on Easy, 1.5 to 4.0 on Normal, and 2.25 to 6.75 on Hard.

Clamped regional difficulty

Regional difficulty to Clamped regional difficulty

How clamped regional difficulty relates to regional difficulty

The clamped regional difficulty is a value between 0.00 and 1.00 based on regional difficulty. This value is shown on the debug screen as the second value listed after the heading "Local Difficulty". This is yet another value that affects the difficulty of gameplay (see below).

The regional difficulty value is clamped as follows:

if (RegionalDifficulty < 2.0) value = 0.0;
else if (RegionalDifficulty > 4.0) value = 1.0;
else value = (RegionalDifficulty − 2.0) / 2.0;

Thus, on Easy, where regional difficulty is never higher than 1.5, the clamped value is always zero.

On Normal, the effects reach the maximum after 63 in-game days (1512000 game ticks) in a fully-inhabited chunk on a full moon; and on Hard after 63 in-game days the effects reach the maximum in chunks inhabited 4 16 hours during a full moon and remain at maximum in chunks inhabited over 16 23 hours.[verify]

Effects

Mob damage

The damage mobs deal to players is affected by the difficulty of the game. The below values represent the amount of damage taken per hit.

 • This applies only to mobs attacking the player. Mobs attacking other mobs always deal the 'Normal' damage listed, regardless of difficulty.
 • Values for the creeper and ghast assume the player is directly adjacent to the explosion.
 • The damage of slimes and magma cubes depends on their size. Tiny-sized slimes, while hostile, are unable to do damage directly.
 • Mobs deal no damage to players on peaceful.

June 14, 2009Notch discussed how his vision for Survival mode would incorporate the concept of difficulty: "When generating a new level or loading a creative mode level, you also select a difficulty. Difficulty levels will probably vary from 'challenging' to 'impossible', since I want the game to be difficult. If it's not fun to always be challenged, I'll add easier difficulties."

However, mycelium and podzol can be first converted to dirt paths with a shovel, then tilled into farmland with a hoe.

Hoes can be used to convert coarse dirt into regular dirt by pressing use on the coarse dirt. Similar to tilling dirt, the space above the coarse dirt must be empty for it to be tilled.

Hoes can also be used on rooted dirt, which turns it into normal dirt, and yields a hanging roots item.

Tilling is effectively instantaneous, regardless of material, and uses 1 durability. Breaking blocks with a hoe uses 0 or 1 durability, depending on the block.

Hoes are unable to work on blocks with a plant on top, even if that plant could normally be placed on top of farmland without reverting it to dirt.

Weapon
Hoes may be used as a weapon, although they deal only 1 damage java. bedrock, hoes can do as much as a pickaxe in terms of damage. Hoes use 2 durability when used as a weapon.

java, hoes have an attack speed modifier depending on the material: wood and gold have a modifier of -3 (refill in 1s), stone has a modifier of -2 (refill in 0.5s), iron has a modifier of -1 (refill in 0.33s), and diamond and netherite have a modifier of 0 (refill in 0.25s).

Issues
issue list

Trivia
*Tilling a dirt block that has a dirt block on top of it changes it to farmland even though it cannot be used. If a hoe is used on a block horizontally adjacent to such a block, the first block reverts to dirt and the selected block is not tilled.
*When a hoe breaks, it does not display the tool breaking animation like on other tools, because tilling is not predicted client-side.
*The textures for the post 1.14 iron and stone hoes have an error, where the color for the edge of the handle is partly the same color as the edge of the top part. This isn't present in any other tool.

Nether wart is a fungus harvested from nether wart crops and is used to plant them, as well as being vital in the creation of potions.

Nether wart crops are found in nether fortresses and bastions and is used to grow nether wart in soul sand.

Obtaining
Breaking
Nether wart can be mined instantly with any tool. A fully mature nether wart crop yields 2–4 nether wart. This is increased by one for each level of Fortune, this allows for a maximum of 7 nether warts dropping from one crop. Less mature stages drop one nether wart, even with the Fortune enchantment.

Natural generation
Nether wart can generate in nether fortresses in soul sand gardens around stairwells. Nether wart can also generate in the courtyards of housing unit bastion remnants. Due to only spawning in these specific structures, it's entirely possible for a nether fortress or bastion remnant to generate without nether wart (though they may still appear in the chests that generate in the fortress).

Nether wart's primary purpose is to brew the awkward potion, the base for all potions, but optional for Weakness.

Crafting ingredient
crafting usage

Trading
Master-level cleric villagers buy 22 nether warts for an emerald as part of their trades.

Farming
Tutorials/Nether Wart farming
When planted on soul sand, nether wart grows through four stages, though the middle two stages use the same texture (the hitbox of stage 3 is three pixels taller). java, the exact age can be seen using the debug screen, and the ages range from 0 to 3. Each random tick, nether wart has a 10% chance of growing one stage. At default random tick speed, each nether wart grows one age step approximately every 13653 ticks on average, and fully grows from planting to harvest every 40960 ticks on average. The growth rate is not affected by light or any other environmental factors. Bone meal cannot be used on the nether wart.

Nether wart can only be planted on soul sand. It cannot be planted on soul soil. It can grow in any dimension.

Nether wart is ready to harvest when it reaches its fourth stage (age:3). Breaking a fully grown nether wart drops 2 to 4 nether wart, while an immature one drops a single nether wart. Using a tool enchanted with fortune increases the maximum number of nether wart dropped by 1 per level, for a maximum of 7 for a tool enchanted with Fortune III.

Composting
Placing a nether wart into a composter has a 30% chance of raising the compost level by 1.

Trivia
* Nether wart's stage changes cannot be detected by a block update detector, but can by an observer block.
* Unlike other crimson "plants", nether wart doesn't have a warped equivalent. This is also the case with nether sprouts, which lack a crimson equivalent.

Raw cod is a food item that can be eaten by the player or cooked to make cooked cod.

Obtaining
Mob loot
Cod
Cod always drops 1 raw cod when killed, unaffected by Looting. If it is killed while on fire, it drops 1 cooked cod instead.

Dolphins
When killed, dolphins drop 0–1 raw cod. The maximum amount is increased by 1 per level of Looting, for a maximum of 0-4 with Looting III. If killed while on fire, they drop cooked cod instead.

Guardians and elder guardians
Guardians and elder guardians have a 40% and 50% chance, respectively, to drop raw cod when killed. java, cooked cod is dropped if a guardian is on fire when killed.

Guardians and elder guardians also have a 2.5% chance to drop a random fish, with 60% of them being raw cod, which drops as cooked if the guardian was on fire. The chance of getting the fish drop is increased by 1% per level with Looting (for a maximum of 5.5% with Looting III), but the type of fish is not affected.

Polar bears
Polar bears have a 75% chance of dropping 0–2 raw cod when killed. The maximum amount can be increased by 1 per level of Looting, for a maximum of 0-5 with Looting III. If killed while on fire, they drop cooked cod instead.

Fishing
Fishing

Raw cod can be obtained from fishing. The wait time of one being caught is decreased with the Lure enchantment and the chance of one being caught is slightly decreased with the Luck of the Sea enchantment (named as such because it increases treasure, not fish).

Catching cod awards 1-6 experience.

Natural generation
javaraw-cod

Villager gifts
java, fisherman villager<nowiki/>s throw raw cod at players under the Hero of the Village effect.

Usage
Smelting ingredient
Food
Raw cod restores 2 hunger and 0.4 saturation.

Cats
Raw cod can be used to tame cats with 1 chance of success, get cats off of chests, and beds, breed cats, and make baby cats grow up faster by 10% of the remaining time. Additionally, raw cod can be used to heal cats by .

Raw cod can be used to gain ocelot trust, breed ocelots, and make baby ocelots grow up by 10%.

Dolphins
Dolphins can be fed raw cod. Doing this improves their trust and interaction with the player. However, unlike most animals, feeding dolphins does not allow them to breed.

When a player feeds raw cod to a dolphin, it swims toward the nearest chest in an underwater ruins or shipwreck. If the chest in the nearest structure is broken, they swim to the next nearest structure that has a chest.

Trading
Fisherman villagers have 50% chance to sell 6 cooked cod for 6 raw cod and 1 emerald as part of their first tier trade.

Apprentice-level fisherman villagers have a 2 chance to buy 15 raw cod for an emerald in Java Edition, and always offer the same trade in Bedrock Edition.

Wolves
bedrock, raw cod can be used to feed wolves, to heal them by . However, unlike other meat items, raw cod cannot be used to speed up the growth of baby wolves nor used to breed them, thus making it only feedable when wolves are not at full health.

Tags and Bits are items exclusive to the 23w13a_or_b April Fools' joke snapshot from 2023. They are used to craft in-game representations of NBT tags.

Obtaining
A stonecutter can be used to cut a name tag into either 16 "Name" or 16 "Tag" items. These can be cut into 16 Bit items each.

To be able to proceed from here the <code>nbt_crafting</code> vote must be approved. Bits can be used in a crafting table to craft Left Curly, Right Curly, Left Square, and Right Square. In appears like these are the only tag items that can be crafted from Bits.

A crafting table can be used to convert a "Tag" item into a "Byte Tag." The amount of sticks added to the crafting recipe specifies the value of the Byte, as a signed 8-bit value. For example, a "Tag" and a full stack of sticks make a Byte with the value <code>64b</code>, while 255 sticks result in <code>-1b</code>. Only one of the sticks is consumed. Two Bytes can be crafted into a "Short Tag" (equivalent to 16 bit), two Shorts into an "Int Tag" (equivalent to 32 bit), and two Ints into a "Long Tag" (equivalent to 64 bit). Many other combinations that form either 16, 32, or 64 bit are possible. For example, two Shorts and an Int make a Long. When combining values, their digits are stuck together in the given order, e.g. <code>1b</code> and <code>0b</code> make <code>256s</code> (equivalent to 010016 in hexadecimal). Undoing any of these crafting actions in e.g. a stonecutter is not possible.

"Float" and "Double Tags" can be crafted by adding one or two boats to any numeric tag. A "String Tag" is crafted with a "Tag" and a piece of string.

"Name" and "String Tags" must be named in an anvil before they can be used. Unnamed Names and Strings always produce a "Sssyntax Error". None of the other tag items can be named.

All these items can be combined in a crafting table to form a short sequence of JSON code, as long as the resulting syntax is valid. For example:
*A pair of Curlies that enclose a named "Name" item and some value, e.g. a Byte, create a "Compound Tag" with the content <code>{Example:0b}</code>.
**Because of the limited size of the crafting table only 3 name-value pairs can be put between Curlies at a time. Compound Tags of any length can be created by concatenating two or more Compound Tags.
**An empty pair of Curlies produces an empty Compound Tag with the content <code>{}</code>.
*A pair of Square brackets that enclose any number of values, e.g. 7 Bytes, create a "List Tag" with the content <code>[0b,0b,0b,0b,0b,0b,0b]</code>.
**Because of the limited size of the crafting table only 7 values can be put between Square brackets at a time. List Tags of any length can be created by concatenating two or more List Tags.
**An empty pair of Square brackets produces an empty List with the content <code>[]</code>.
**"Name" items cannot be used in a List.

The resulting Compound and List Tags can be used as values in other Compound and List Tags, as deeply nested as you want.

Usage
Tags appear to have no further functionality. They cannot be eaten or placed in the world, except in an item frame, as each other item can. However, Compound Tags with values like <code>{Enchantments:[{id:"minecraft:sharpness",lvl:127b}]}</code> will show the enchantment glint and actually act accordingly when used. This appears to work with many weapon and tool enchantments.

In theory, an extremely lucky <code>replace_recipe_output</code> vote can change the crafting recipe for compound tags to output something else. When cheats are enabled you can test this with a command like <code>/vote rule minecraft:replace_recipe_output approve {key:"minecraft:compound_tag",value:"minecraft:netherite_sword"}</code>. However, as long as this vote is approved no other compound tag can be crafted. Use <code>/vote rule minecraft:replace_recipe_output repeal *</code> to undo all recipe replacements.

In combination with the <code>midas_touch</code> vote tag items can be converted into gold ingots. These retain their NBT data. When the world is loaded in another version of the game tag items disappear, but gold ingots persist.

Trivia
*This implies that a name tag is 128 bit.
*Compound and list tags are special in so far that the value they show in their tooltip is not merely a property of the item, but their actual NBT data. This is also the reason why naming them is disabled as that would mess up the NBT data.
*The snapshot also contains an unused texture for an End Tag.

Kelp is an underwater plant that generates in most oceans.

Obtaining
Natural generation
Kelp naturally generates in any ocean biomes (except in frozen, deep frozen and warm), near and around seagrass. Each chunk has 1 chance to generate a vegetation of kelp.

Breaking
Kelp can be mined instantly with any tool or with the player's fist. Removing water from the kelp block destroys the kelp. Breaking one part of a kelp stalk destroys all kelp blocks above it. Each block drops a kelp item.

Trading
Kelp can be bought from wandering traders for 3 emeralds.

Usage
Kelp can be placed underwater by hand, or anywhere by the use of commands such as setblock. Placing it by hand gives it a random age value between 0 and 24. Kelp can be placed only in water source blocks or downward-flowing water, not horizontally flowing water.

When placed in downward-flowing water, the flowing water transforms into a water source block, which is useful for faster bubble column elevator creation.

Any building block can be placed on top of a kelp plant, which is useful for building structures over a deep ocean without needing to build from the ocean floor (see also lily pad).

Cooking ingredient
Composting
Placing kelp into a composter has a 30% chance of raising the compost level by 1.

Growth mechanics
Kelp can be planted on a broad variety of blocks. It grows underwater if it has either a source block of water or, Java, flowing water above it. Neither players nor dispensers can remove the water source block that kelp grows in without breaking the kelp first.

Kelp does not require any light level to grow. Kelp also grows without having sky access. Bone meal can be used to grow kelp by 1 block on each use.

Kelp, when planted, is generated with a randomly chosen age value, which can be checked when pressing <kbd>F3</kbd>java. The age value of a newly planted kelp plant varies randomly from 0 to 24. Each time the kelp grows in height by one block, the newly generated top of the kelp plant increases its age by 1. When the top block of the kelp plant reaches an age of 25, it stops growing. This means that kelp can naturally grow to a height between 2 (if the first kelp plant had an age of 24) and 26 blocks (if the first kelp plant had an age of 0).

When a kelp plant block is broken, the age of the kelp plant block underneath is randomized to a value from 0 to 24 and the kelp continues growing until it reaches age 25. It is possible to use this mechanic to cultivate a kelp plant to increase its growth height beyond its natural maximum height of 26 blocks. This can be done by breaking the top-most block of the kelp plant each time it reaches age 25. A kelp plant cultivated by a player in this way repeatedly grows until it reaches the water surface.

Each time it receives a random tick, kelp has a 14% chance of growing.

If shears are used on the topmost block of kelp, that block automatically sets its age value to 25 and stop growing.JE

Farming
Tutorials/Kelp farming
Kelp farming is similar to farming sugar cane, although kelp must be placed underwater. Automation of harvest is easier because items float up in water.

Trivia
* In real life, kelp is not considered a plant. It is classified by scientists as a brown algae.
** Kelp in real life absorbs nutrients directly from the water, instead of through its root-like structure, holdfast, which merely attaches it to the seabed. This is in accordance with kelp being able to grow on almost any solid block in Minecraft.

An armor stand is an inanimate entity that can wear armor. It can also hold items and be posed (but these are not possible in Survival in Java Edition).

Obtaining
An armor stand can be broken by quickly it twice, dropping itself and any armor placed onto it.

Natural generation
Two armor stands are found in each taiga village outdoor armory, one equipped with an iron helmet, the other with an iron chestplate.

Usage
Players can use armor stands to hold armor, mob heads, carved pumpkins, and elytra. Commands can be used to give them other items. The stand does not have a GUI, so players interact with it directly. Armor stands are also able to be placed in different orientations, similar to banners or signs. Armor stands are entities, allowing them to be pushed by pistons, moved by flowing water, pulled with fishing rods, pushed by players (with knockback), and bounced by slime blocks.

armor on the stand places the armor if done on a bare spot. Conversely, clicking on armor with a bare hand removes the armor and places it in the highlighted hotbar slot. It is not possible to take or place items from the armor stand's hands unless playing on Bedrock Edition.

Armor, mob heads, or carved pumpkins can be automatically placed on armor stands with a dispenser.

Armor stands can be customized further to have arms, pose, disobey gravity, dual wield and other things by summoning them using summon with NBT tags.

In maps heavily using command blocks, armor stands can be used to keep scoreboard objectives that are 'global' to the map, run commands, etc.

bedrock, the pose of the armor stand can be changed by interacting with the armor stand (or pressing the button on mobile devices) while sneaking, or by using a redstone signal. There are 13 possible poses. Armor stands can also hold items by interacting with the armor stand (or pressing the button on mobile devices) while holding an item that cannot be worn.

Behavior
Because armor stands are entities, they obey gravity, allowing them to fall and rest on non-full blocks such as enchanting tables, snow layers and slabs.

Any armor on the stand drops when the stand is broken. Armor stands can display enchanted and all forms of dyed armor. The effects of most enchanted armor have no effect when on an armor stand, with three exceptions:
* Frost Walker creates frosted ice blocks on water as usual if an armor stand is pushed with a piston.
* Depth Strider slows the movement of the armor stand when being pushed with water.
* A player may take damage from hitting an armor stand that holds armor enchanted with Thorns.

Armor stands are not damaged by cacti but can be broken by arrows. An armor stand destroyed by an explosion or a firework does not drop as an item. Armor stands in water and lava at the same time are not consumed by the lava.

be, armor stands can be affected by status effects. They can be 'killed' by Harming and Decay splash/lingering potions, lava, fire, and campfires, and they play the player death sound and fall to their side and disappear, yielding no armor stand item. If an armor stand is equipped with an item or armor, that item or armor is considered as "naturally-spawned equipment" with an 8.5% chance of dropping when the armor stand "dies" from the Instant Damage or the Wither status effect. If the dropped item is any form of weapon, tool or armor, it drops in a badly damaged state because the game considers it as "naturally-spawned equipment".

The stand wobbles slightly when being hit by the player.

java, it is possible to create an armor stand with arms using the summon command. It is also possible to change an armor stand without arms into a stand with arms by using the data command. The commands are as follows:

* <code>/data merge entity @e[type=armor_stand,sort=nearest,limit=1] {ShowArms:1}</code>, which changes the nearest armor stand into an armor stand with arms.
* <code>/summon minecraft:armor_stand ~ ~ ~ {ShowArms:1}</code>, which summons a new armor stand with arms shown.
*<code>/summon armor_stand ~ ~ ~ {Rotation:[0.0f]}</code>, which summons a new armor stand that faces a desired direction (dependent on changing "0.0f" to other numbers like "90.0f" or "180.0f", otherwise it faces the same way as a default armor stand).

* Equipping armor stands with certain blocks and items can cause rendering glitches. * Bedrock Edition has a version exclusive armor stand model, which includes posable arms.
*Using redstone to change the stands reverse the poses, starting with the can-can pose first.
*Placing the stand within three powered redstone dust always changes its pose to the honor pose. Repeaters also switch the stand to the honor pose if not set four blocks from one.
*Using external tools, armor stand spawners can be placed.
