Coral blocks are solid blocks that come in five variants: tube, brain, bubble, fire, and horn.

Dead coral blocks are the dead variants of coral blocks.

Obtaining[edit]

Coral blocks can only be obtained with a pickaxe enchanted with Silk Touch, otherwise, they will drop the respective dead coral block. Dead coral blocks can be obtained with any type of pickaxe.

Natural generation[edit]

Coral blocks and dead coral blocks naturally generate in coral reef structures. These are found in warm oceans.

Usage[edit]

Schematic of valid block placements for coral blocks
with water around. Several ways are shown where the
arrangement would cause coral blocks to stay alive
or die.

Coral blocks and their dead variants can be used as building or decoration blocks.

Dead coral blocks[edit]

In order for coral blocks to stay alive, at least one of the orthogonally-adjacent blocks must be water. If placed outside of water, it will transform into its respective dead coral block after a few seconds. They are a grayscale version of coral blocks. Maximum density of living corals is reached when water blocks are a chess knight's move apart, like in a bamboo farm.

June 28, 2010Notch mentioned on his blog: "I tried adding corals, but it’s really hard to draw a single block that looks like corals, since it’s really more about crazy amounts of variation and diversity. But I do know that the corals will have tiny fish particles around them."

October 5, 2012Coral were jokingly teased in the fake snapshot 12marc40awesome, along with fish mobs and "fish blocks".
November 18, 2017Coral blocks were shown in a clip at MineCon Earth. Horn coral, fire coral, tube coral, and dead coral were shown (only one variant at the time), and in the clip slab variants of coral were shown as well.

Like coral blocks, they were blue, pink, purple, red, and yellow at the time, but were later changed to tube, brain, bubble, fire, and horn.
18w10d Added coral reefs, allowing coral blocks to generate naturally.
18w14b Renamed what was previously called coral to coral blocks, and renamed coral plants to coral.
Renamed the blue, pink, purple, red, and yellow variants of all coral blocks and dead coral blocks to tube, brain, bubble, fire, and horn, respectively.

Coral blocks will now have a short delay before dying.
Coral blocks will no longer die as long as one side is touching water.
