Wood planks[Bedrock Edition only] [until 1.13]/Planks[Legacy Console Edition only] [upcoming 1.13] is a generic name for a common block used in many crafting recipes. Its texture resembles a neatly stacked pile of wooden planks hewn from one of the six different tree species.

Obtaining[edit]

Wood planks can be broken by hand, but using an axe will speed up the process.

Oak planks can be found in 68.4% of bonus chests in stacks of 1–12. In 1.13[upcoming] they can be found in 70.5% of bonus chests in stacks of 1–12.

In Bedrock Edition they can be found in all bonus chests in stacks of 1–12.

Usage[edit]

The different colors of wood planks. In order, these are Birch, Oak, Spruce, Dark Oak, Jungle, and Acacia.

Wood planks can be used for building structures, as crafting ingredients, and as fuel.

Crafting ingredient[edit]

Wood planks are used in many crafting recipes. Doors, fences, fence gates, slabs, stairs and boats must be crafted from wood planks of the same species and will match the species used. For other products, planks of different species can be mixed freely and the wood species in the product is indeterminate.

Fuel[edit]

Wood planks can be used as a fuel in furnaces, smelting 1.5 items per block.

Repairing[edit]

Wooden swords, shields, pickaxes, axes, hoes and shovels can be repaired with wood planks in an anvil.

Wood planks have the ID name minecraft:planks and are further defined by their block data or block state.[until 1.13]

If a command is used to create planks with data value 6 or higher, these planks will have the name "Oak Wood Planks" but a missing texture. They can't be used to craft stairs, slabs, doors, fences or gates. If placed, they'll become actual oak planks.

Trivia[edit]

  • Many items crafted using wood planks or sticks have textures that most resemble oak wood, regardless of the species used to craft them. Item frames, on the other hand, resemble birch wood.
