Clay[a] is the item obtained from clay blocks used for crafting or making bricks.

Clay is obtained when a clay block is broken with a non-Silk Touch tool. Each block yields four clay balls.

Natural generation[edit]

Clay can be found in 14.3% of desert village house chests in stacks of 1, and in 20.8% of village mason chests in stacks of 1–3.

Hero of the Village[edit]

If a player has the Hero of the Village status effect, a Mason villager might give that player a clay block as thanks ‌[Java Edition only]. This can be placed and broken to harvest clay balls.

Clay can be crafted back together to form clay blocks or baked in a furnace to create bricks.
