Bamboo is a type of plant found in jungles, used to breed pandas and craft scaffolding.

Natural generation[edit]

Bamboo generates in widely scattered single shoots within jungle biomes. Bamboo generates much more densely in the bamboo variants of jungles, covering large areas of the landscape.

Bamboo can be planted on grass, sand or gravel. Bamboo is the fastest growing plant in Minecraft. At default random tick speed, each plant grows approximately every 204.8 seconds. In order to grow, bamboo plants require a light level of 9 or higher.

Bamboo can be mined with any tool.

Block Bamboo
Hardness 0
Tool Any
Breaking time[note 1]
Hand 3
Any sword 0
Any axe 0.375
  1. Times are for unenchanted tools in seconds.

In Java Edition, pandas will drop 1 bamboo when killed. In Bedrock Edition, pandas drop 0-2 bamboo when killed which is affected by Looting by 1 per level.

Bamboo can be found while fishing in jungle biomes as a junk item.

Chest loot[edit]

Bamboo can be found in 15.6% of shipwreck supply chests and 51.0% of jungle temple chests in stacks of 1–3.

In Bedrock Edition they can be found in 17.7% of shipwreck supply chests and 50.9% of jungle temple chests in stacks of 1–3.

When mined, any other bamboo block placed above it will also get destroyed. A bamboo block will also be removed and drop itself as an item if a piston pushes it or moves a block into its space. When bamboo is first placed as a sapling it's not solid and can be destroyed by water flowing into it. After growing at least one block taller it transforms into another kind of bamboo block that is solid and can't be destroyed by water. If the player needs to transform a bamboo sapling into a solid bamboo block they can place another bamboo on top of it.

Bamboo can be placed and will grow on grass blocks, dirt, sand, gravel, mycelium, podzol, coarse dirt or red sand. When bone meal is used on it, it will grow 1–2 blocks taller. Bamboo can grow to a maximum of 12–16 blocks tall. Bamboo needs a light level of 9 or above to grow.

Bamboo items are eaten by pandas and can be used to speed up the growth of baby pandas. Bamboo can also be used to breed pandas, who must, however, have at least 8 blocks of bamboo within a 5 block radius, making the panda the only mob in the game to have extra breeding requirements. At this point, the player can feed them bamboo and they will mate to have a baby.

Bamboo can be used as fuel in furnaces and will smelt 0.25 items.

Flower pots[edit]

Bamboo can be placed in a flower pot, where it retains the design it has in its item form.

The different stages of bamboo growth.

The appearance of bamboo changes as it grows. When first placed, it takes the form of a small shoot. When it grows one block taller it grows to 2 pixels in length and width and the top block has leaves coming off it. At 3 blocks, the top 2 blocks have leaves and at 4 blocks the bamboo expands to 3×3 pixels. At 5 blocks tall, the top 3 blocks will have leaves on them and as the bamboo grows the leaves will move up and stay at the top 3 blocks. Destroying a block of bamboo will not change the appearance of the blocks below it. Bamboo is oriented at a random position in the block that it is in. Bamboo, grass and ferns are the only plants that change their hit boxes as they grow.

Issues relating to "Bamboo" are maintained on the bug tracker. Report issues there.

  • Because bamboo also grows very fast, it only takes 500 plants in an automatic farm to produce more items than a hopper can collect. However, a single hopper can only move enough items to keep 6.25 furnaces running.
  • Bamboo, poisonous potatos and dead bushes are the only three plants a composter cannot process.
  • Flowing water breaks bamboo saplings, but is blocked by mature bamboo stalks.
