Ancient debris is an extremely rare ore found in the Nether, and is the main source of netherite scraps. Its high blast resistance makes it immune to normal explosions. In item form, it floats on lava and cannot be burned by any form of fire.

Obtaining

Natural generation

Ancient Debris Spawn Rate Per Layer

Ancient debris spawn rate per layer; Y=15 has the most ancient debris. Average only.

Ancient debris generates in the Nether in the form of mineral veins. Up to two veins may generate per chunk: one vein of 1–3 ancient debris attempts to generate with a periodic normal distribution (similarly to lapis lazuli ore) from levels 8 to 22, and an additional vein of 1–2 ancient debris attempts to generate randomly from levels 8 to 119. On average, Y-level 15 has the most ancient debris.

There is an average of 1.65 ancient debris blocks per chunk[needs testing], with a normal maximum of 5. However, it is technically possible for up to 11 ancient debris to be found in a single chunk; adjacent chunks can generate veins on the border with up to 2 blocks spawning in an adjacent chunk. As of Java Edition 1.16.4, on average they generate 1.56 ores per chunk. Given this number, and that there are 4096 blocks in a chunk (163), there is approximately a 0.038% chance that any randomly selected block will be an ancient debris block.

Ancient debris never generates naturally exposed to air and can replace only netherrack, basalt, and blackstone.[note 1] It may also generate alongside smaller pockets of lava.

Breaking

Ancient debris drops as an item if mined by a diamond or netherite pickaxe. If mined by any other tool, it drops nothing.

Usage
To eat an enchanted golden apple, press and hold use while it is selected in the hotbar. It restores 4 points of hunger and 9.6 saturation.

The enchanted golden apple provides:
* Absorption IV for 2 minutes (providing points of absorption health)
* Regeneration level II java or V bedrock for 30 seconds (java, 1 is restored every 25 ticks, × 0.4 per second) for 20 seconds (long enough to heal 16 points of damage; bedrock, 1 is restored every 6 ticks, × 1.66 per second for 30 seconds, which is long enough to heal up to 100 points of damage.
* Fire Resistance I for 5 minutes
* Resistance I (20% reduced damage from all sources except the void) for 5 minutes

Horses
Enchanted golden apples can be used for improving the chances of taming a horse by 10%, for breeding and leading horses, and for speeding up the growth of baby horses by 4 minutes.

Crafting ingredient
Piglins
Piglin are attracted to enchanted golden apples and run toward any enchanted golden apples on the ground, and inspect it for 6 to 8 seconds before putting it in their inventory. However, piglins do not eat enchanted golden apples (or any food).

A goat horn is an item dropped by goats. It has eight variants, and each plays a unique sound when used which can be heard by players in a large radius.

Obtaining
Mob loot
A horn is dropped when an adult goat rams a tree or any other hard block that occurs naturally where goats spawn. These include stone, coal ore, copper ore, iron ore, emerald ore, log, or packed ice. Goats do not ram other solid blocks. java, these blocks are listed under the snaps_goat_horn tag, and can be modified by data packs.

Up to two horns can be dropped from an adult goat. Regular goats may drop the Ponder, Sing, Seek, and Feel horns, while screaming goats drop the Admire, Call, Yearn, and Dream horns. A specific goat drops only one type of horn; that is, if a goat drops a Sing horn, its other horn is also a Sing horn.

Natural generation
goat-horn
Only the four variants from regular goats can be found here.

Usage
When used, they play a loud sound that can be heard from up to 256 blocks, but are also limited by the server view distance. Each horn variant plays a unique sound. There are eight variants, four of which are exclusive to screaming goats.

There is a cooldown of seven seconds between each use of the horn. All goat horns are affected by this cooldown.

Gold nuggets are items used to make gold ingots and other various golden items. One gold nugget is effectively worth one-ninth of a gold ingot.

Obtaining
Mob loot
Zombified piglins, when killed, may drop 0-1 gold nuggets. When killed using a weapon enchanted with Looting, they may drop an additional gold nugget per level of Looting used, up to a maximum of 4.

Chest loot
gold-nugget

Mining
Nether gold ore mined using a pickaxe drops 2-6 gold nuggets. If the pickaxe is enchanted with Fortune, it has a 33.3% chance to multiply the drops by 2, Fortune II has a 25% chance to multiply the drops by 2 or 3 and Fortune III has a 20% chance each to multiply the drops by 2, 3, or 4 for a maximum possible drop of 24 golden nuggets. The average drop rate for a Fortune III pickaxe is 8.8, while the drop rate for a Silk Touch pickaxe is a single ingot, or a flat rate of 9. It is slightly more efficient to mine with a Silk Touch pickaxe.

Gilded blackstone mined using a pickaxe has a 10% chance to drop 2-5 gold nuggets. If the pickaxe is enchanted with Fortune I, the chance gold nuggets drop is increased 14.29%, Fortune II increases the drop chance to 25%, and Fortune III guarantees the drop.

Usage
Gold nuggets can be used to craft a golden carrot or glistering melon for brewing. Also, gold nuggets can be combined with gunpowder and dye to create a firework star that bursts in a star-shaped explosion.

Piglins instantly pick up any gold nuggets that are within 1 block of them. Unlike other gold-related items, they do not intentionally seek out gold nuggets to pick up and only pick them up if they walk near it. Unlike gold ingots, gold nuggets picked up are dropped upon the piglin's death.

Issues

Issues relating to "Ancient Debris" are maintained on the bug tracker. Report issues there.

Trivia

 • Despite ancient debris' rarity, emerald ore is actually rarer; emerald ore has a lower spawn chance per chunk, and while ancient debris can appear in veins as large as five in any Nether biome, emerald ore generates only as individual ore blocks in mountain biomes.
 • The texture of the ancient debris is supposed to look like pressed metal plates.[1]
 • Ancient debris yields the most experience of any item when smelted.
 • Ancient debris is actually what remains of the mining activity of the piglins, who extracted all the original netherite ore.[2]
 • Ancient debris does not generate exposed to air, but can sometimes be seen on the surface when it generates adjacent to a fungus or twisting vines.
 • Ancient debris is the only ore that does not use the same texture on all six sides.
 • It is possible to find veins of up to 20 contiguous ancient debris - up to five debris can generate in a chunk, so if a vein of five generates in adjacent corners of four different chunks, a vein of 20 debris would be created.

Notes

 1. The generation system explicitly attempts to place ancient debris where it is not exposed to air. Rarely, ancient debris can be exposed by later generation processes. It can also be exposed to fungi.
