"Block update detector" redirects here. For the block, see Observer.

The Block Update Detector, or BUD switch, is a redstone mechanism that uses quirks in the game in order to detect changes in nearby blocks. There are many different designs that are all based on the same general idea: a redstone circuit is put in a state where it should be following a mechanic, but the game has not updated the block to follow this rule. This unupdated block then functions as the "sensor". When an adjacent block changes state in some way, the game updates all adjacent blocks - including the sensor block - and powers them up. The circuit then performs some other action and, with most designs, goes back into standby.

Note: Most of the BUD switches listed below do not work on Bedrock Edition, since redstone is largely separate from block updates.

What it detects

The BUD switch detects the following events when they happen next to the sensor block:

Block and block state changes that some BUDs may not be able to detect, include:

Types of BUD Switches

Below is a comprehensive video from SethBling (outdated), which showcases a variety of compact block update detectors, mostly making use of the redstone block.

In-Game

Observer

The BUD switch now has a compact block form in-game and it was added in 1.11 snapshot 16w39a called the 'Observer'. The observer does not detect block updates, instead it detects block state changes.

Piston Based

Many BUD switch designs exploit a property of pistons called quasi-connectivity. A piston can receive power through a space one block above itself. In this case, the power source is either above and to the side of the piston, or two blocks above it. However, when powered in this way, the piston does not immediately notice changes in the state of the power source. When some other block update happens next to the piston, it will "wake up" and react to the change. By forming a feedback loop, where the state of the piston controls the state of its power source, it becomes the sensor of a simple BUD switch:

In this design, the piston will only extend in response to an adjacent block update, but after extending it will immediately retract because the arm of the piston notices the repeater next to it turning off. This is how a piston BUD resets itself: by having the power run next to the extended piston arm, with a delay.

Note: If the block diagonally adjacent to the sticky piston becomes horizontally adjacent, the circuit will constantly pulse instead.

This design can be extended with multiple sensor blocks. All of the pistons in this design are sensors.

Piston bud array

A piston-based "BUD array", with multiple sensor blocks. All the pistons are sticky.

A 1-wide tileable design using redstone blocks:

Alternative method: if players take a sticky piston facing parallel to the ground, then place a Block of Redstone on its face, and connect the block of redstone out to the side of the piston through a repeater that goes into a block diagonally adjacent to the piston, it works a fully functional BUD. Then, if you set a delay of any number of ticks other than the default 1-tick delay on the repeater, it turns into a T-BUD. This process can also be reversed by setting the repeater back to its default 1-tick setting. (It only works since release of Redstone Blocks, though players could theoretically use a normal block and a redstone torch to mimic its effects.)

An extremely compact one-time design that is easily hidden and therefore ideal for traps is as follows: Place a piston, a sticky piston is most useful, parallel to the ground. Place a block one block to any side except the piston head and one block above the piston. On the side of the block facing the piston, place a redstone torch. Then place a lever on any other side of the block and switch it on. The redstone torch will go out but the piston will remain extended. You can then break everything except for the piston, but make sure to break the lever after you break the torch. A block update will then cause the piston to retract, possibly pulling the floor out from under the victim. Remember, though, that after the detector is tripped, it has to be rebuilt to be used again.

The design looks something like this:

Or, for it being smaller: The player can make a 2×1 (3×1 when extended) BUD by having a 2 sticky pistons (stacked) both facing any direction except up and down, then on both of those sticky pistons add Redstone Blocks. Whenever a block is updated, (destroyed, placed etc.) it will switch the bottom piston outwards. Good for traps, as the BUD may need to be compact. The only con to this is that it has to be reset.

Another extremely compact design involves using 1 sticky piston facing up with a slime block and redstone block stacked on top of it. This design is 1×3 (1×4 when extended) and allows the piston to be updated from 5 of its sides. It does not need to be reset after triggering, but players do need to make sure that the slime block isn't grabbing a wall in order to activate in the first place.

Stuck-Piston Based

The following designs works because pistons can't be pushed by other pistons while extended. Also, when a piston retracts, it doesn't notify any other pistons that were trying to push it. The piston with the block attached to it is sticky and acts as the sensor. This design has the advantage of a low profile, and also that the quirk it exploits is less "buggy" and less likely to be fixed in the future.

A perpendicular "stuck piston" BUD switch. The piston with the block attached to it is sticky.
Stuck piston bud

A perpendicular "stuck piston" BUD switch. The piston with the block attached to it is sticky.

Inline stuck piston bud

An in-line "stuck piston" BUD switch. Left piston is sticky.)

The latter design above can also be extended to an array in a variety of ways, including a one-wide design.

Inline bud array

A very compact "in-line" BUD array. Every piston is a sensor except the one next to the obsidian. None of the pistons are sticky.

One wide inline bud array

A one-wide BUD array. Every piston is a sensor except the one next to the obsidian. None of the pistons are sticky.

The stuck-piston principle can also be used to hide a BUD completely underground, as shown by this video:

Dropper Based

Here is a video about this.[needs testing]

Redstone Torch Based

As of 14w25a (with the fix of MC-56541), a burned-out redstone torch can be used as a reliable BUD. Once burned-out, a redstone torch will reset upon an update from any adjacent block. This is the smallest and simplest BUD, only requiring a single torch and redstone dust (plus two repeaters for a solid output signal.)

Redtorchbud

A burned torch BUD with a solid output.

A redstone torch on the side of a block and put redstone dust make the redstone signal loops with itself is also a BUD. The place around the redstone torch (include upside and downside) is the detecting place, but not the redstone dust. The redstone torch will blink for 16 ticks, and finally burn down. It has a 56 ticks cool down. It can't detect sleeping in a bed.

An example of a redstone torch based BUD.
Torch BUD

An example of a redstone torch based BUD.

This works in the Bedrock Edition of Minecraft, as shown in the video below.

Redirection based

Redirection bud

A simple redirection bud

When redstone dust redirects, it does not send out block updates, so a piston can have its power removed by redirecting redstone dust away from it to remove power. When the piston receives a block update, it will update its state accordingly and the redirection bud will reset.

Variations

Other devices can be built using the same underlying principle as the BUD switch.

BUD in Bedrock Edition

This method no longer works in 1.14.1.

By using a waterlogged block that is not allowed to flow (through the use of trapdoors or other techniques) and an observer clock, if the player updates the waterlogged block rapidly and the observer clock is in the same chunk the clock will break and give a constant output out of both sides. Then whenever the block is next updated, one side of the clock will pulse off for one tick. You can create a BUD switch using this by linking up using both sides as the output of the BUD.

Video describing this phenomenon:

T-BUD

By eliminating the reset mechanism of a BUD switch, it becomes a T-BUD or Toggle-BUD. This device has two stable states, which it switches between when it detects a block update next to the piston. This is equivalent to a normal BUD connected to a T Flip-Flop, but much simpler to build. It is useful for tracking the state of blocks like furnaces, grass block, dirt, and beds. However, it has useful capabilities for placing some blocks two blocks away. When placing a piece of redstone dust two blocks away, the T-BUD activates when it is destroyed only. When placing a repeater two blocks away, the T-BUD activates only on the placement.

Note: As of Java Edition 1.7.4,[note 1] the repeater in the picture must be set to a two tick delay. If the repeater is left at one tick, it will work as a BUD.

 1. It is unconfirmed in which version this has become a requirement.

History

The earliest known BUD switch is on the Minecraft Forums.[1]

The term "BUD switch" was later coined by YouTuber EthosLab.[2]

Ankle monitors were equipped in the boots slot. In survival mode, when equipped, it could not be taken off. However, players in Creative mode are unaffected.

When equipped, the player would be afflicted with Slowness I.

During the night, being a certain number of blocks from the world spawn, above a certain minimum,how much? would prompt the following message in chat: "CURFEW WARNING! You are violating your house arrest! Get back by [distance] meters!"

If in the Nether or the End, a different set of messages would be cycled through which can be seen in the section below.

Nether and End messages
* CURFEW WARNING! You are violating your house arrest! Uuuh... where are you anyway?

An item frame is an entity or block entity that displays the item or block that is inside it.

A glow item frame keeps itself and the item inside it illuminated, even in the dark.

Obtaining
Breaking
je, an empty item frame can be broken simply by punching it. If the item frame contains an item, punching it drops the item, leaving the frame on the wall.

Because item frames are entities java, they can be broken in Adventure mode. They will also be targeted by commands using the @e selector.java

Usage
Item display
Item frames can be placed on the sides of cactus blocks, pressure plates, fences, trees, slabs, cobblestone walls, chests, doors, and all solid blocks. They can also be placed on the top and bottom of these blocks. To place on chests and doors, the player needs to be sneaking. As item frames are an entity, multiple item frames can occupy the same block, although on different faces. It also allows non-solid blocks to occupy the same space.java

Players can place items in the frame by using the item. If a map is placed in an item frame, it enlarges to show the map in the size of a full block, with the item frame's location displayed as a green pointer on the map, pointing in the direction the item frame is facing. If this is done in the Nether, the green cursor spins around similar to the white cursor (players). If an item in an item frame has been renamed using an anvil, it displays its custom name when the cursor is over the item frame. If the player places a block inside the frame, it is displayed in miniature half in, half out of the block. This can be most notably seen on stairs or slabs.

Pick block may be used on item frames by players in creative mode only, the control has no effect for players in Survival or Adventure mode. When the item frame is displaying an item, pick block picks the displayed item instead of the item frame.

Item frames can be placed on the lid of a shulker box that is positioned horizontally, but pop off when the lid is opened.java

Rotation
The displayed item can then be rotated by right-clicking the frame. Items displayed in the item frame can turn 45° diagonally, with a total of 8 possibilities (90° and 4 possibilities if it is a map), and the frame outputs a redstone signal depending on the rotation phase that can be interpreted by a redstone comparator (note that this rotation value is separate from the clock or compass rotation). As long as the frame remains placed, it remembers the orientation of the last item it held, and uses it for the next item it holds.java

Glow item frames
When an item is placed inside a glow item frame, it appears to glow, even though it does not emit any light level.

Sounds
Item frames and glow item frames share the same sounds.

Trivia
*The item frame is based upon a suggestion on Reddit, like the ender chest and flower pot.
*The item frame is the only entity to reference a block model. Because of this, the texture of the frame border is the same as the birch planks texture.
*Item frame is the only placeable item that can interfere with other non-full block entities.
*Due to the way layer textures are displayed in Minecraft, maps float on item frames, similar to how icons float on the map itself.

crafting usage

Writing
By pressing use item or long pressing screen anywherebedrock while holding a book and quill in their hand, the player can open a text editor GUI.

Using this GUI, the player can write a single book up to 100java or 50bedrock pages long, with up to 798 characters per page. The player can write up to 79,800java or 12,800bedrock characters inside the entire book. No page may be longer than 14 lines and each line can have a width of 114 pixels (see pixel width of each character here).

The player has the ability to copy and paste into books. However, the paste does not work if the text being pasted is longer than a single page. Most Unicode characters are available in books, and they may be pasted in without issue.

In singleplayer, the world pauses while a book is being edited.java

Lecterns
One can place a book and quill or a written book on an empty lectern.

The lectern then emits a redstone signal depending on the displayed page in the book. On the last page, the lectern emits a signal strength of 15. This is why lecterns are listed in the "redstone" tab in the creative inventory.

Formatting codes
Formatting codes

Text in a book can be styled using codes starting with the § character (section sign).
* § + k creates randomly changing characters.
* § + l creates bold text.
* § + m creates strikethrough text.
* § + n creates underlined text.
* § + o creates italic text.
* § + 0 – f (hexadecimal) creates colored text.
* § + r resets any of the previous styles so text after it appears normally.

If the player uses multiple codes, and continue typing past the end of a line, the next line exhibits only the last formatting code used.

Signing
Books can be signed by pressing the "Sign" button while in the interface. java, when signed, a book bears the name of the player who wrote it and a title chosen upon signing. bedrock, the book doesn't display the name of the player as the author; instead, the author can be any text the player wants. After it has been signed, it cannot be edited again – it has turned into a written book.

Special characters can be used in the title, if typed from a keyboard that supports them. Alt codes do not work, and the § character cannot be typed even using a keyboard that implements it, meaning titles cannot be colored or formatted in-game. However, on Linux using the compose key to produce special characters does work.

The title of the book can be up to 16 characters long, and the player cannot paste into a title. A "workaround" for the 16-character limitation is to manually rename the book at an anvil, which always costs 1 experience level. This can be done with either a written book or a book and quill – both versions will always display the changed name. If a custom name is removed from a written book, it will revert back to the title it was given during the signing process.

Chiseled bookshelf
the chiseled bookshelf while having a book and quill in the main hand will put the book inside the chiseled bookshelf.

Trading
bedrock, expert-level librarian villagers buy 2 books and quills for one emerald. Book and quill is offered in two item slots due to being non-stackable.

java, expert-level librarian villagers have a 50% chance to buy 2 books and quills for one emerald. The amount of books and quills needed is supposed to be 2, but due to the item being non-stackable, only one is needed for the trade.

A flower pot is a decorative block that can contain flowers, bamboo, saplings, cacti, mushrooms, fungi, and other reasonably small plants.

Obtaining
Natural generation
Flower pots naturally generate in witch huts where they contain a red mushroom, the basement of igloos where they contain a cactus, and in woodland mansions, where they contain birch saplings, dark oak saplings, dandelions, poppies, blue orchids, alliums, azure bluets, red and white tulips, and oxeye daisies.

Flower pots containing a dandelion can be found in some plains and savanna village houses. Flower pots containing a cactus or a dead bush can be found in some desert village houses. Flower pots containing a spruce sapling can be found in taiga village mason houses. Flower pots containing a poppy can be found in taiga village churches.

Breaking
Flower pots can be mined instantly using any tool or without a tool.

A flower pot drops itself as an item (any plant or mushroom in it separately) when pushed by a piston or washed away with water.

Lava can flow into the space of a flower pot, destroying it.

Usage
A flower pot can be used to hold mushrooms, fungi, and various plants. Plants that can be placed in a pot include any one block high flowers, saplings, ferns, dead bushes, cacti, bamboo, azaleas, mangrove propagule, and roots.

Plants can be removed by using the interact button.

je, flower pots can be placed on any block, or over air.

be, they must be placed on top of a full-block top surface, or the top of a fence, stone wall, or hopper. They cannot be placed on slabs and stairs unless those blocks are upside-down. Pots may also be placed on an upward facing trapdoor. If the trapdoor is opened, the pot will break.

Flower pots are 3 of a block high and can be stepped on. It is not possible to walk from the top of a flower pot onto a full sized block without jumping. It is possible to jump from a flower pot onto a fence.

The plant or fungus can be removed from the flower pot by pressing the use control. This places the item directly back into the player's inventory.

They can be used to display cacti and wither roses without inheriting their damaging properties.

Potted warped fungus can be used to repel hoglins.

* The flower pot is based on a suggestion from Reddit, like ender chests and item frames.
* Flower pots break falling blocks.
* If a plant that has been named is put in a flower pot, the plant loses its name.
* The inside of the flower pot in Java Edition uses the center 4x4 pixels of the dirt texture while Bedrock Edition uses the center 6x6.

A nautilus shell is an item that is used for crafting conduits.

Obtaining
Fishing
Fishing#Junk and treasure
Nautilus shells can be rarely obtained as a treasure item from fishing. The drop chances of nautilus shells slightly increase with each level of Luck of the Sea on the player's fishing rod.

Mob loot
Drowned have a 3% or 8% chance to spawn with a nautilus shell in their off-hand, and this nautilus shell always drops upon death.

Trading
Wandering traders may sell a nautilus shell for 5 emeralds each, but they only sell 5 of them at a time.

Usage
bedrock, a nautilus shell is one of the few items that can be held in the off-hand.

*Nautiluses are animals that occupy deep oceans in the real world. However, they are absent in Minecraft and there are currently no plans to add nautilus mobs into the game.
*Because bedrock allows for Nautilus shells to be held in the off-hand (since drowned hold them), they are the only item in that version that can be put in the off-hand slot without having a specific function.

title = Lava Bucket
image = Lava Bucket.png
renewable = Yes

}}
A lava bucket is a bucket filled with lava.

Obtaining
Interacting
To fill an empty bucket with lava, use it on a lava source block or lava in a cauldron. The block is consumed in the process. Flowing lava does not fill a bucket.

If there is a lava source above the pointed dripstone stalactite, there is a 15 (~5.9%) chance for it to completely fill an empty cauldron within 10 blocks under the tip with lava after a random tick. This lava can then be scooped with a bucket, making it a renewable resource.

Usage
A lava bucket can be used to place down lava sources with the Use Item button. Doing so gives the player the bucket back. Lava buckets can be used to replace some transparent, non-full blocks such as tall grass and water, both flowing and sources.

java, lava buckets can be used to break Nether portal blocks by placing the lava on the side of a block next to the portal block.

Smelting
A lava bucket can be used as an efficient fuel. It has the longest burning value of 1000 seconds, compared to 800 seconds for a coal block (a lava bucket smelts 100 items, and a coal block smelts 80). After smelting starts, the lava bucket turns into an empty bucket.

Trading
bedrock, journeyman-level armorer villagers buy a lava bucket for one emerald as part of their trades.

java, journeyman-level armorer villagers have a 40% chance of offering to buy a lava bucket for one emerald.

Cauldrons
A lava bucket can be used to fill a cauldron with lava. The lava damages any entity standing inside the cauldron, unless the entity is immune to fire damage.<!-- ex: nether mobs--> Flowing water or waterlogging does not affect the lava in the cauldron.

Trading
The enchantments are the same as the ones obtained from an enchantment table at levels 5–19.

Carrot/warped fungus on a stick
If a carrot on a stick or a warped fungus on a stick is used to the point of zero durability, it becomes a fishing rod again.

Mob loot
java, the drowned mob has a 3.75% chance of spawning with a fishing rod equipped.
bedrock, naturally-spawned drowned has 0.85% chance to spawn with fishing rod, while converted drowned has 1% chance to spawn with it.
If killed, they have an 8.5% chance of dropping this fishing rod. That chance increases by 1% for each level of Looting applied to a weapon (up to 11.5% chance). The dropped item is damaged and never enchanted.

Usage
Fishing
Fishing

Fishing rods can be cast into water. After a short period of time, a stream of bubble particles approaches the fishing rod. If the rod is reeled in once the particles "bite" the bobber, the player obtains a fish, junk, or possibly a treasure item. If the fishing rod was in the player's hand and is no longer, the fishing bobber entity despawns, unless the fishing rod to the off-hand or it's been swapped with another fishing rod.

Crafting ingredient
Fishing Rod, Damaged Fishing Rod

Hooking mobs and other entities
Fishing#Fishing rod durability

The fishing rod can be used to hook mobs, itemsjava and some entities, and even players. The fishing rod can then be reeled in, dragging the hooked object toward the player without dealing damage. Reeling in a mob or entity costs 5 points of durability, and reeling in an item costs 3 points. Reeling a mob pulls it toward the player with a speed of 1 the distance between mob and player.

Besides mobs and items, entities that can be reeled in include:
* s
* s
* Minecart Minecarts of any type
* Armor Stands

Some entities can be hooked, but cannot be reeled in:
* Horse Mobs riding/being ridden by other mobs (in Bedrock Edition, the hooked mob dismounts)
* Paintings
* Item Frames
* knots
* End Crystals
* Shulkers

Attempting to reel in said entities still costs durability to the rod.

The rest of the entities cannot be hooked at all:

* egg Thrown eggs
* snowball Thrown snowballs
* ender-pearl Thrown ender pearls
* eye-of-ender Thrown eyes of ender
* splash-potion Thrown potions
* bottle-o'-enchanting Thrown bottles o' enchanting
* dragon-fireball Dragon fireballs
* Wither Skull Wither skulls
* firework-rocket Firework rockets in flight
* arrow Arrows in flight
* particle-speed Area effect cloud
*

Using it on a villager lowers the player's popularity and causes any naturally-spawned iron golems nearby to attack.

Fuel
A fishing rod can be used as fuel in furnaces, smelting 1.5 items per fishing rod.

Other usage
The hook can also be used to activate wooden pressure plates or weighted pressure plates.

Enchantments
A fishing rod can receive the following enchantments:
+
Name
Max Level
Method
Lure
III
Enchanting TableAnvil
Luck of the Sea
III
Enchanting TableAnvil
Unbreaking
III
Enchanting TableAnvil
Mending
I
Anvil
Curse of Vanishing
I
Anvil
note

A fishing rod with the Mending enchantment has infinite durability if used for fishing only. The rod incrementally repairs itself using the experience gained each time a player reels in a fish, even if starting from nearly 0% durability. Players wearing damaged Mending armor have a lower average rate of repair, because the mending mechanic can ignore damage to the rod while repairing armor instead. Unbreaking III can nearly guarantee that the rod does not break, unless it's already at low durability.

Trivia
*The maximum distance the player can get between the bobber and themselves is 33 blocks.
*Skeletons can be pulled into their own arrows.
*When casting the rod into a portal, the bobber may stick to it like a normal block, go through and travel in the Nether, or stop on the next block behind the portal.
*If the player stands directly in front of a column and casts the line onto a block above the player, the line falls downward.
*If the bobber hits a painting, the painting breaks.
*The player can get into bed after casting a line, and the line remains in the water until the player wakes up and reels it in.

A rabbit's foot is a brewing item obtained from rabbits.

Obtaining
Mob loot
Each rabbit has a 10% chance to drop a rabbit's foot when killed by the player. This chance can be increased by 3% per level using a sword enchanted with Looting.

A fox sometimes spawns with a rabbit's foot in its mouth, which always drops upon death. Alternatively, the player can drop a food item, which causes the fox to drop the rabbit's foot.

Cat gifts
Cat#Gifts
A tamed cat has a 70% chance of giving the player a gift when the player wakes up from a bed, and the gift has a 16.13% chance to be a rabbit's foot.

A tool is an item used by the player while held to perform actions faster and more efficiently, to gather materials not obtainable by hand, to gain information, or to perform completely new actions. With the exception of the clock, compass, empty bucket, and lead, tools do not stack in the inventory. Tools can be repaired; see Item repair.

Usage
Best tools
Many blocks have a preferred tool to break them. Some blocks can be broken only with certain tools. The tool's material also affects how fast a block is mined. Materials from worst to best in terms of mining speed are wooden, stone, iron, diamond, netherite, gold.

Item durability
Durability

Different tools have different amounts of durability. Some uses require more durability to be used than others. A tool's durability is also affected by its material. Materials from worst to best in terms of durability are gold, wooden, stone, iron, diamond, netherite.

Some tools are not block-breaking tools: This includes bows, fishing rods, carrots on sticks, flint & steel, and buckets. Such tools are no better than bare fists at breaking blocks, but they do not take damage from doing so—they take damage from being used in their own intended manners.

Item enchantability
Materials from worst to best in terms of enchantability are stone, diamond, iron, wooden/netherite, gold.

Smelting
Smelting

Iron or golden tools can be smelted into nuggets.

* A fishing rod can be used as fuel in furnaces, smelting 1.5/1 items per fishing rod.

Chest loot
flint-and-steel

Usage
Igniting
When on the space above any solid top surface, on any side of any flammable block or any side of any obsidian block within a valid unlit nether portal frame regardless of if there is a solid top surface available, the flint and steel places a fire there.

Flint and steel can be used to light unlit campfires, candles and cakes with candles.

Flint and steel can be used to light nether portals, as any fire existing within an appropriate obsidian frame will instantly be replaced with nether portal blocks that occupy the entirety of the frame.

Using flint and steel on TNT ignites it. The explosion damage dealt by TNT ignited with flint and steel in this specific way counts as the player's attack. If the player is a fire is instead placed on the side of the TNT the flint and steel was used on.

A flint and steel can be used on a creeper to force it to explode. Explosions initiated in this way cannot be cancelled.

When powered, a dispenser containing flint and steel can place fires or ignite relevant blocks such as TNT or campfires in the space directly in front of it. This reduces the flint and steel's durability. A dispenser containing a flint and steel cannot detonate creepers.

Enchantments
Trivia
* In Adventure mode, flint and steel cannot light fires, nor can it ignite nether portals (unless it has the tag CanPlaceOn:obsidian). However, it can still ignite TNT and creepers.
* The name "Flint and Steel" may be misleading and is inaccurate considering the game doesn’t have and possibly will have steel in the game and it's crafted with iron instead. This is similar to the Old Growth Pine Taiga, as there are no pines in the game and they have Spruce Trees instead.
**In real life, Iron can’t be used as a fire striker, so Mojang had to rename it to Flint and Steel so it makes more sense. This explains why it is called Flint and Steel, but there is no steel in the game.
**Steel was mentioned by Mojang, as a “stronger” iron, but shortly rejected, and there are no currently no plans to add it to the game.
* Flint and steel cannot light end portals.
* Flint and Steel is the first item to mention another item that is not in the game.
*In the April Fools Snapshot, Java Edition 23w13a or b, one of the possible voted was “Flint and Steel can ignite any block”.

An amethyst shard is a crystal ore obtained from mining a fully grown amethyst cluster or can be obtained from chests in ancient cities.

Obtaining
Mining
An amethyst cluster mined using a non-Silk Touch, non-Fortune pickaxe drops 4 amethyst shards. When mined using any other tool, item or mechanism (such as explosions or pistons) it drops 2 shards. The maximum amount of amethyst shards dropped can be increased with Fortune. Fortune I gives a 1 chance for eight shards, averaging 5.33 shards; Fortune II gives a 25% chance (each) to give eight or 12 shards, averaging 7 shards, and Fortune III gives a 20% chance (each) to give 8, 12, or 16 shards, averaging 8.8 shards.

If the amethyst cluster in any of its growth stages is mined using a pickaxe enchanted with Silk Touch, it drops itself rather than amethyst shards.

Allay duplication
If an amethyst shard is given to an allay that is currently dancing to an active jukebox, the allay emits heart particles, consumes the amethyst shard and duplicates into another allay. After this, there is a 5 minute cool down until both allays can be duplicated like this again.

Items are "dropped" blocks or items (non-block resources) that appear in the world, rather than being in the inventory of a player or block entity; they are a type of entity.

Appearance
Items have two possible appearances, generally corresponding to whether the item appears as a 3D or 2D shape in a player's inventory screens. 3D items appear as their 3D shape, miniaturized to about 1 scale, while 2D items appear as 1 scale with all the pixels extruded into a cube. Both types slowly rotate and bob up and down; this is merely a visual effect, the item itself does not actually rotate or bob up and down.

Item entities that represent a stack of more than one item appear as several items stuck together. Stacks of 1 appear as one item, 2-16 as two items, 17–32 as three, 33-48 as four, and 49+ as five.

The rotation rate of the item is approximately 2.87675 degrees per tick, or 57.595 degrees per second.

Behavior
Item entities come from many sources. Some common ones are:
* The death of a mob or player.
* A block that is mined by a player, destroyed by an explosion, or washed away by water.
* An inventory item tossed by pressing the drop item key (default Q on PC, dpad-down on Xbox, down/dpad-down on Nintendo Switch, dpad-down on PlayStation) or dragging a stack outside of an inventory window.
** In the mobile versions of be, items in the hotbar can be dropped by pressing on the item's slot. The entire stack is dropped.
* A container (other than an ender chest or a shulker box) that is destroyed while holding items inside.

The player may be thought of as having an "item pickup" box that surrounds their hitbox. This pickup box extends 1 additional block to the horizontal sides, and 0.5 additional blocks up and down. Any item whose hitbox intersects with the pickup box can be picked up. The pickup box is inclusive on the horizontal sides (distance less than or equal to 1 will count), and exclusive on the vertical sides (distance less than 0.5 will count, but not equal). When the player's hitbox size changes, such as when crouchingjava or sleeping, the pickup box size changes with it.

Once an item entity's hitbox overlaps with the player's pickup box, it can transfer its items. As many items as can fit in the player inventory, excluding the armor slots and the off-hand slot, are transferred. If any item is transferred, a "plopping" sound is played. If all items are transferred, the items appear to move into the center of the player. The item entity never physically moves, however, which means it can appear to go through lava and blocks in its path. This can happen through blocks that are thinner than a full block, but also through the shared edge of two full blocks. Unlike experience orbs, multiple item entities can be picked up simultaneously. Dropped items have a delay of 10 ticks (half a second) between appearing and being able to be picked up, or 40 ticks (2 seconds) if thrown by a player, dolphin, or fox.

When two stackable items of the same type come within 3/4 of a block of each other, they merge into a single stack if the resulting stack size does not exceed that item's maximum stack size.

Items do not collide with other entities(except boats) and are only moved or stopped by blocks.

Like other entities, items can be pushed by flowing water and bubble columns, pushed by a piston, launched by a moving slime block, stuck to a honey block, or caught in a cobweb. Items move at faster speeds if ice is placed under the flowing water. When in still water, items float slowly up to the surface.

Items can be reared by fishing rods, costing 3 durability.je

If an item is within a solid block, then it flies out one of the unobstructed sides, or out of the top of the block if surrounded by solid blocks on all sides. It does this even if the space below is unoccupied; therefore, it is possible to recover an item dropped by breaking a hole in a floor by quickly placing another block there.

Items visually disappear when the player is about 16 blocks away from them, and reappear when they get closer. This distance can be adjusted by the "Entity Distance" slider in video settings.

Unlike most entities, items cannot be spectated in Spectator mode without use of the spectate command.

Damage
Items cannot be attacked by players or mobs; attempting to do so simply hits through them. However, they take damage and disappear from environmental or block-based damage such as explosions, fire, lava, and contact with cacti. Items have essentially no health, so they are destroyed by the slightest damage, though if set on fire they may remain for a few seconds before disappearing. Nether stars are immune to explosions, and netherite-based items and tools are immune to fire and float on top of lava. Also, some blocks that normally damage mobs, such as magma blocks, campfires, sweet berry bushes, wither roses and powder snow, do not damage items.

Despawning
Items despawn after 6000 game ticks (5 minutes) of being in a loaded, entity-ticking chunk; this is affected by the player's simulation distance. If two item stacks merge, the timer is set to the item that has more time remaining. The 5-minute timer is paused when the chunk is unloaded or no longer processing entities. Nether stars do not despawnbedrock.

Items that fall into the void immediately despawn when they fall below Y=-128 in the Overworld, or Y=-64 in the Nether and the End.

Tropical fish is a food item that cannot be cooked.

Obtaining
Fishing
Tropical fish can be obtained from fishing. The wait time of one being caught is decreased with the Lure enchantment and the chance of one being caught is slightly decreased with the Luck of the Sea enchantment (named as such because it increases treasure, not fish).

Tropical fish cannot be caught when fishing in jungle biome and variants.bedrock
<!--1-6 exp-->

Mob drops
Guardians and elder guardians have a 2.5% chance of dropping a random fish upon death. This has a 2% chance of being tropical fish. The chance of getting the fish drop can be increased by 1% per level of Looting, but the type of fish is not affected.

Tropical fish always drop 1 tropical fish in its item form when killed. This drop is not affected by Looting.

Usage
Food
Tropical fish restores 1 hunger and 0.2 saturation.

Trading
Expert-level fisherman villagers have a 1 chance to buy a single tropical fish for one emerald.bedrock

Expert-level fisherman villagers always offer to buy 6 tropical fish for an emerald.java

Wolves
Bedrock, tropical fish can be used to feed wolves, healing them by . However, unlike other wolf food, tropical fish cannot be used to breed or speed up the growth of baby wolves. Tropical fish can be fed only to a wolf that is not at full health.
