Uncovered Stronghold[]

Whoever took those pics of the stronghold in the air, could you spare me the map? I want to study the layout of the different Stronghold rooms for the Stronghold Blueprints project. Oh, and for inspiration for my Stronghold-themed multi-floor labyrinth project. EDIT: With the walls! Putting a Stronghold in the air via superflat has no walls, and looks just... so ugly, plus it won't help. Crazytobuildmc (talk) 17:57, 16 February 2015 (UTC)

Library loot[]

Error in upcoming Stronghold generation[]

"strongholds has increased to 128 per world. They generate in rings with the strongholds evenly spaced around the circle until the total of 128 is reached" is incorrect, but the error might in Minecraft's code rather than the wiki description - the wiki description sounds like what Mojang intended to happen.

Which each new Stronghold, it's angular position is determined like this:

   angle += 2π * ringNumber / structuresPerRing;

Which means everything works normally on the first ring (ringNumber starts at 1), but on the second ring it goes around the circle twice, placing two strongholds at each position on the circle, on the third ring it places 3 strongholds together, etc. Due to the way distance is randomised the stronghold clumps tend to be arrange in lines.

You can see that ring 3 is working how Mojang probably intended, because the ring number doesn't divide evenly into the number of structures for that ring, so they don't end up overlapping. The number of structures is slightly random, so for seed 2 (diagram above), ring 1 has 3 structures, ring 2 has 6 structures, 3 has 13 structures and 4 has 28 structures.

I've reported this as a bug, but I don't know whether "strongholds aren't generated the way I think they should be" will be taken seriously as a bug report. DrFrankenstone (talk) 03:54, 7 November 2015 (UTC)

Sounds like a bug to me. The distance from the origin should be multiplied by ringNumber, but the angle between strongholds should only depend on how many are in the ring. -- Orthotopetalk 04:19, 7 November 2015 (UTC)

Strongholds under villages[]

SamGamgee55, I'm curious why you removed the fact that strongholds may spawn under villages as "false info." Back in 2014, Jeb tweeted that strongholds spawn under villages in MCPE 0.9.0, and that's always been the case until the recent 1.0 update; I'm not enitrely convinced that this isn't still the case to some degree in the recent beta, as the math for StrongholdFeature::generatePositions in the new beta is the same as the math for StrongholdFeature::isFeatureChunk from the old version. Eitherway This information is still useful as older worlds generated in past versions will still have strongholds under villages in chunks that were generated by the old version. As you've been able to find an official source for that, then I'd say re-add it with a reference to that tweet. If this has changed in Pocket Edition 1.0, then include a {{upcoming|until=Pocket 1.0}}, and include an update in the History. Exact formula?[]

Can someone include the exact formula minecraft uses for determining the location of strongholds? All I can find is "just throw 2 ender pearls and..." --99.190.124.167 21:53, 4 April 2017 (UTC)

There's not an exact formula, they generate randomly at certain distances around the origin. If you see Stronghold#Generation, it tells you all about it. – Sealbudsman talk/contr 22:11, 4 April 2017 (UTC)

Are stronghold normally under village wells?[]

Just asking, in Minecraft PE strongholds are normally found under village wells? Is it true most of the time? Or mere coincidence?--116.14.174.2 06:21, 11 November 2018 (UTC)

There is no easy way to actually investigate the code of Bedrock Edition and conclude whether Strongholds usually generate under village wells, but it appears to be the case. Generation[]

Do strong holds often have rooms that are cut off from the rest of it? I was playing on my survival world on Bedrock Edition and found one under a savanna village, but when I entered, there was just an intersection room with hallways that ended after a few blocks. I did some digging around and found another short hallway and a two-story library, but that's it so far. Is it possible for a stronghold to spawn without an end portal at all (if it is, I'm gonna be really ticked)?73.208.227.101 01:50, 23 December 2018 (UTC)

This is stated in the Generation section: "Most parts of the stronghold can be overwritten by ravines, caves, abandoned mineshafts or dungeons; but it is very rare that the end portal is replaced, which would force a player to find one of the other strongholds." Java vs. Bedrock stronghold generation[]

I noticed that in Bedrock Edition, strongholds usually generate mostly intact, and can’t be overwritten by caves and mineshafts, but can be overwritten by underground lakes, dungeons, fossils, and coral, but otherwise the whole stronghold generates like it is supposed to. In Java Edition, I always notice that corridors, libraries, staircases etc. can be overwritten (e.g. ceilings missing) by caves and other underground structures. Could this be due to how air is placed differently in Java and Bedrock? Like there’s cave air in Java Edition’s underground structures which can replace stronghold rooms and in Bedrock, it is only overwritten by the things I stated above because they are meant to generate with pockets of air from the time they were added? I’m sorry for the long ramble, I’m just really curious in how the generation for stronghold works. 2ombie gaming (talk) 12:17, 26 February 2020 (UTC)

On Java Edition, caves and ravines do not overwrite strongholds. The reason why it looks like they do is that the stronghold's walls, floors, and ceilings don't replace air, except for in the end portal room. This also explains why strongholds generate fragmented on superflat worlds and when above ground.

Spawning Above a Stronghold[]

I joined a world, and I saw a nearby village about 100 blocks away, I set up my house there and started stripe mining at y 12, I ran into a mineshaft in the direction of spawn. About the same as the chance of spawning next to any other uncommon structure. The seed picker has a seed that lets you spawn near a stronghold too. As well as a seeds that spawn next to other rare structures such as ocean monuments and mansions. ~ Amatulic (talk) 20:08, 7 September 2020 (UTC)

Yaw[]

This page is missing information about the spacing between strongholds in the same ring. Are they all separated by the same number of degrees around 0,0? Are they all randomly offset from yaw 0? Per ring? Also is there anything out there that could visualize where strongholds are in a given seed? I see a little discussion of the angles above but that was from before the update changing how they generate. Pinsplash (talk) 08:46, 17 October 2020 (UTC)

Total combination of end portal formation[]

Can I add it on trivia? Since there are 12 end portal blocks in a stronghold and there is 2 possible block data on an end portal block, so 2¹² is 4096, can I add "There is 4096 different combination of end portal formation." However it is still very rare to found a activated end portal. TheLogicalMine (talk) 15:16, 9 February 2021 (UTC)

@TheLogicalMine: I'd revert it if I saw that, because anyone could argue that it's mathematically incorrect and there's no way to "win" depending on the interpretation. There aren't 4096 different combinations, because many of them are symmetric and therefore identical. Consider a simple case with a an equilateral triangle arrangement of three circles, each of which can be black or white. 2 possible values for 3 circles is 23=8 combinations, but because the circles are all identical and the triangle is rotationally symmetric, there are really only 4 combinations (3 white, 1 black 2 white, 2 black 1 white, 3 black). Canyons don't overwrite strongholds[]

I had two seeds from several versions back that showed strongholds cutting through canyons, and I tested them again in Bedrock Edition 1.17.0.

The result: Canyons do not overwrite strongholds. Rather, the canyon exposes stronghold structure that passes through the canyon.

Two examples:

  • Seed 347815779, teleport to 1085,100,496 and descend into the canyon to see the stronghold crossing through it.
  • Seed 2065486297, teleport to 1415,100,100 and descend into the canyon to see the stronghold crossing through it.

In fact, the last gallery image in Stronghold#Overview shows a stronghold passing through a ravine rather than being overwritten. And that's from Java Edition.

Therefore, I am removing the assertion from the article that says canyons overwrite strongholds. Amatulic (talk) 21:13, 21 June 2021 (UTC)

"Secret doors" in Strongholds[]

The wiki once said that "Sometimes, doors can be sealed off by stone bricks, resulting in "secret doors", usually occurring with 5-way crossings." However, it has already been discovered that they occur only in 5-way crossings. The reason behind this appears to be that the game clears the wrong exits when generating rooms branching from 5 way crossings that are oriented in a certain way, though I'm not sure if I should add the second detail.
