it IS working
on my multiplayer survival server, my freind found some sponge in a stronghold. he gave one to me and I could make an underwater tunnel without hving to use glass! I could even remove it, and the water didnt come back.

sponge DOES work in SMP

BUKKIT and hMod have Sponge Simulation plugins. Sponge do not actually work in vanilla it's not as blue as it looks 18:07, 17 March 2011 (UTC)
Sponge does NOT work in SMP
I play in my own server, beta 1.2_02. Used /give to get myself some sponge, and tadaaa:
Sponge does not affect water in SMP.

I'm Still Able To Get Sponge!

Sponges Should be Added in Minecraft Beta
I don't see any reason why they were removed so Notch include the addition of sponges in a Minecraft update. They could be found natually in shallow water. (and they still can absorb water) Anyone agree with me? -User:Wcb98

Sponges should be togglable
I like the idea of sponges but I can see how, to some, they could be a "game breaker" so I think you should be able to turn them on or off according to your preferences. Squirrle 14:20, 9 May 2011 (UTC)

Where are the SPONGES?!?!?!
I honestly don't think it was fair for Minecraft to get rid of sponges in their 1.6.5 update! There should be a change! [If I'm going nuts and that there ARE sponges, plz tell me so!!!!!!:)]

Sponges don't work! At all!!!
Sponges no longer work! The only places they still work are classic, and I think survival test. You can still get them in multiplayer by using the /give command, but they do NOTHING. END OF STORY. What I think a Sponge's use is for
I think sponges, when soaked in water, will be dried up. However,the size should be increased because Sponges, in real life, tend to get bigger as the soaker up more water. It can be also used to hold in Lava. Maybe another fluid that could be added in the future, like oil. BlockBarracade 14:40, 2 August 2011 (UTC)

The can be used as spongebobs :P jk, we can modify the files to make sponges appear randomly. As rare as clay, and then modify it at will to do whatever we want! MUAHA- sorry. Sponge does generate?
I was playing on a server with friends and we all built a house and my friend built a 1 block deep glass platform on the water, and an hour later we all logged on and there was sponge in it?
"on a server" are the key words. This means either the server has been modified, or someone trolled you. --24.125.172.57 22:00, 25 August 2013 (UTC)
For the complaining guys
