Alternate type of Nether Portal?

I already know that you can create 2 Nether Portals sharing one common side. However, can someone who has more obsidian than me tell me if you can create 2 Nether Portals that cross through each other? (I assume that the answer is no, but I will describe it here...) For example, if you have 2 3x5 portal and make it so that they intersect each other (so that they share NOT a common side, but a common CENTER) and ignite the one block that they share, would that create one portal, 2 portals in the formation above, or just plain, straight 0? Pigmen from portals ignore the mob cap, true or false

I've always heard that mob_spawners and portals ignore the mob cap when creating creatures but coming here I see no mention of it. Is it just an urban legend or is it true?

In testing this, one would have to exclude the Z'd. P's. that'd "accidentally wandered" through the n.p. So it might be easier to check into the mob spawner separately - which could be more-controllable (less new /random reasons to spawn-initially /portal-through specific other-Dimension ones, them in) than the n.p. - by staring at it. This is true. To easily test this, start a new creative world (it will likely lag a lot and may crash), set up a large nether portal and set the randomtickspeed quite high (like 10000). You will see pigmen spew out of the portal. Likewise, for the spawner, either find a spawner or make one, and set the minimum and maximum delay to 1 s, and make sure the mobs can fall out of the detection range, but still remain alive. You can count how many their are by killing them or applying an effect and see it easily exceeds the cap. In both cases the mob cap is very rapidly exceeded.Jack666Black666 (talk) 11:17, 16 November 2020 (UTC)

Majr why did you remove the image guide I added for portals? The problem I'm finding with the existing information is that the obsidian does not have clear edges so hard to work out how many blocks high and wide based on the images hence my diagram. The photos don't really help. I can't figure out how to post on your profile talk page. --Egrphj (talk) 01:04, 6 March 2016 (UTC)

It's pretty easy to count 3 blocks without spacing, but I've added spacing to the schematics anyway. MajrTalk

Linking outdated?

I was emailed by a guy saying our information on portal linking is outdated, saying you don't need to divide by 8 to link portals any more. His video is pretty incoherent on the matter, so does anyone know if our information is actually incorrect? MajrTalk

Looks like we're still accurate: tested in 16w42a, nether portal at 1000/1000 leads to about 120/112 in overworld; nether portal at 8000/8000 leads to 1000/1000. Took a quick look at that video, didn't see him ever check coordinates, so I'm not sure how he would know that the coordinate conversion has changed. -- Orthotopetalk 06:20, 23 October 2016 (UTC)

No, the description "It searches a bounding area of 128 horizontal blocks from the player, and the full map height." is misleading. In 1.15.2 I created a superflat creative world, set my first four portal blocks at {-1,0; 0,0; 1,0; 2,0} perpendicular to the x axis. Facing East I entered the nether, deconstructed the spawned portal, which was a bit off, and reconstructed it at the exact same co-ordinates in the nether. I then returned to the overworld and began placing portals to the east of the 0,0 location expecting to find a new portal generated in the nether at overworld location x=1025 (128 times 8 +1). To my surprise, no new nether portal generated until I had reached x=1153. I would not say that dividing (multiplying) by 8 is "no longer needed", but I would say it is no longer a reliable guide to where a new portal will generate. 100.19.20.76 23:20, 15 March 2020 (UTC)

I just noticed something with nether portals generated in the air in pocket edition.

When you create a nether portal in pocket edition and the corresponding portal gets generated in the air , not only does it generate with the extra obsidian for the platform , it also generates netherrack. This is probably pocket edition exclusive , but it's not mentioned on the page at all. Boorider7 (talk) 12:31, 9 February 2017 (UTC)

Suffocation

"Most entities can travel through portals, including mobs (except the wither and ender dragon), thrown items, boats, minecarts or horses without passengers (neither mobs nor player)."

I pushed my horse trough a Nether Portal today, only to see it suffocating and dying when I crossed the portal. Did I do something wrong, or it's just that horses are stupid? --187.94.193.57 20:33, 24 March 2019 (UTC)

Horse AI, like dog AI, is stupid. A horse currently won't move away from a source of suffocation damage. Likely the horse's head appeared within the portal frame. Memetics talk | edits 08:13, 2 April 2019 (UTC)
I've brought this up several times, in a few places. It Is possible to use a Nether Portal with a Horse-type - I ride mine as often as I want, including Portaling them whatever-way as desired - using wider Portals.
Wider (I use 4-wide and 4-High, so I can even Dismount in the Nether Portal, Frame) Portals are just a part of wider spaces generally. I've also had Horse-types die of Suffocation Damage in 3X3 spaces (or perhaps just Despawn-generally? but it's happened more than 2X, between Overworld and Nether, and with no obvious cause[s such as Fire /Lightning]), even 3X4 ones.
So I end up with 4X4X4 (or by however-long, as what's the point in the Nether of a Horse-type permanently in a Box?) minimum-size Boxes, on Both local ends in-Dimension (Overworld /Nether), but Also on the Other end, for essentially "4 Boxes" (enough 4's, already?). Also it seems Mobs, By The Way, are "Frozen"-temporarily (when just- Portaling /Portal'ed), from re-reading (like the couple-dozenth time) the main Page, for this topic.
I've suggested having a Diamond-specifically Pickaxe (now-even there's a Netherite variety, up-coming in 1.16), and /or (a) Lead(s sometimes they Break, it's good to have backup, usually). To Try to Free the Horse-types, but in the end, it's just simpler Inv'y. -wise to use Bigger Boxes, than before, I've re-found (over about 7 Years, of this specifically).

Portal search and creation

In the "Portal search and creation" section, it currently says (emphasis mine):

First, if the portal block in which the player is standing has been used recently, then it will re-use the destination that was chosen the last time; in this sense, portals do "remember" their linked pairs, but only for about 15 seconds (300 game world ticks, or 150 redstone ticks). One side effect of this behavior is that the cached destination is not validated before being re-used, so if a player travels through a portal and immediately deactivates it on the other side, other players can still follow them through for the next 60 seconds and appear at the same destination, even though there is no longer an active portal there. After 60 seconds have passed without anyone using the same origin portal, the cached destination will expire.

Where does the "60 seconds" figure come from? Shouldn't this be 15 seconds, consistent with the 15 seconds mentioned earlier in the paragraph? Memetics talk | edits 08:12, 2 April 2019 (UTC)

Destroying Portals

There are at least 2 ways to destroy nether portals. One is by mining one of the obsidian blocks in the frame. You can also break it with a dispenser aimed at the purple blocks. Updated Linking Behavior

I'm new here and couldn't really figure out a good way to word it. However the linking algorithm has changed in 1.16.2. Specifically, when moving from the Overworld to the Nether, only a 3x3 chunk area is searched now. When moving from the Nether to the Overworld, it is still a 17x17 area.

This issue (https://bugs.mojang.com/browse/MC-197538) covers the new behavior and is resolved by Mojang as working as expected. Krinderlin (talk) 14:54, 25 August 2020 (UTC)
