Annoying animation?

Do we have to have that bubble animation on every. single. grid? It's a bit annoying IMO. 66.234.197.139 15:46, 25 October 2011 (UTC)

Add any potions missing from the table under here

Please include the recipe, the name of the potion, effects, and other relevant info. I did the original tables for the recipes, and I'll happily maintain them. Miner Key 15:18, 17 October 2011 (UTC)

Potion of Swiftness effect confirmation

Could someone please test and confirm the walking, sprinting, jumping, and sprint jumping speed/length with and without the Potion of Swiftness? I've seen the values go from 3 to 5 to 4 to 6, so I've annotated them. Miner Key 15:18, 17 October 2011 (UTC)

Strength potions work on swords

this needs a bit more testing but I have noticed an affect on swords while under the effects of strength potion, normal creeper took me 3 hits with iron sword, with potion it took me 2. this was with the strength II potion.

^It works with anything. I use my fists or a stone sword and I still do +3 hearts of damage. With the stone sword I was killing all hostile mobs in the overworld with 2 hits, and I was level 1, no so "hidden skill perks," if those even exist. ;)

Brewing wont be as it was in 1.9pre2. It's a speculation based on mod (I know that this mod using code from game but that code never meant to be released to public) and should be deleted until version with actual brewing is out. — MiiNiPaaT|C 10:45, 30 September 2011 (UTC)

the fact that so many potions and the whole system is already implemented makes me think that the only thing they change will be the cauldrons. jeb tweeted that this was the problem, so probably the item is out and there will be something similar to a craftig table or something, but how potions work and the effects of the items have a high chance to stay like they are already implemented --Wally

Citation Needed?

"Currently there are over 9,000 ingredient combinations." How do we know this? If we know the list of ingredients or functional combinations then we should have a link to them, if not we need a citation. Cultist O 10:48, 30 September 2011 (UTC)

Using the TooManyItems mod, you can get well over 20,000 (yes, twenty thousand) potions in 1.9pre4, if you change TooManyItems.txt. I don't know how to cite this, but you can check it by installing Marglypf's TooManyItems mod. 97.81.127.149 00:18, 16 October 2011 (UTC)TKSuperfan, Oct. 15 2011

Potion Names and Ingred?

I look at the code, way too lazy to make them all in game. --Wizjany 21:22, 2 October 2011 (UTC)
Thats what I was getting at, was it in the code.. or did someone figure out how to modify the code to craft these potions in game? Thanks for the answer.. --Throex 21:24, 2 October 2011 (UTC)
This forum post contains most of the info. I am personally not using the cauldron stuff though, so I haven't looked at how they work, but all the stuff about potions and effects and so on is already there, just no way to brew them (without the mod). --Wizjany 21:31, 2 October 2011 (UTC)

Extensive Recipe List

I'm working on an extensive list of all the potions and their changes like a tech-tree style format HERE, because the list on this page looks quite unorganised and unorthodox. --HexZyle 04:39, 3 October 2011 (UTC) EDIT: More refined and updated version of the page: Recipe Table --HexZyle 08:52, 3 October 2011 (UTC)

Validity of Recipes

Any potion with the effect "Instant Harm III" will instantly kill you upon drinking it, rendering it pretty much useless. Should the recipes with this effect be removed from this page?

1. its in the game, so it should be listed on the wiki even if its useless
2. if you have a plugin/mod that removes the text from the potions (for non-alchemists) it will be realy good for RP --MG127 19:46, 8 October 2011 (UTC)

Also, I believe slimeball is not an ingredient. All the programmers who work with the cauldron and brewing code have not mentioned anything about a slimeball as an ingredient. Neither do mushrooms, and they do not appear in any valid recipes on the page. --HexZyle 04:16, 4 October 2011 (UTC)

Current ingredients (as of 1.9pre3): Redstone, Glowstone Dust, Sugar, Spider Eye, Fermented Spider Eye, Blaze Powder, Magma Cream, Ghast Tear and Nether Wart Seeds. --Wizjany 19:57, 8 October 2011 (UTC)
Thanks. Bolded new ingredients --HexZyle 20:33, 8 October 2011 (UTC)

If one thinks about it, magma cream is a slime ball and blaze powder, so it is kind of an ingredient, albeit one that is used to make an ingredient, if that makes any sense. Hlast 13:01, 10 October 2011 (UTC)

Needs to be tabled up

The old Cauldron based recipes have been removed, the new Brewing Stand based ones have been added. We are going to need lots of tables. And it needs an equivalent of the Crafting and Smelting templates. Ecksearoh 17:54, 6 October 2011 (UTC)

Better idea - New page - Alchemy, made in the same way as the Crafting and Smelting pages --HexZyle 05:04, 8 October 2011 (UTC)
Nope, Notch and Jeb both refer to it as Brewing. What we need is Template:Grid/Brewing Stand and Template:Grid/Brewing Stand/doc. Similar to Template:Grid/Furnace and Template:Grid/Crafting Table But it will have to wait until Jeb releases the finalized list of potion ingredients and potions. The names of the Potion Images in the available images file will then have to be updated before they can be used in the template. --Ecksearoh 10:23, 9 October 2011 (UTC)

Use for Spider Eyes

Is there any beneficial use for Spider Eyes and Fermented Spider Eyes? As far as I can tell they just make harmful potions or add harmful effects.

Splash Potions --HexZyle 20:50, 13 October 2011 (UTC)

You can make those into splash potions to throw and thats beneficial to a great extent for pvp and mob battles. (71.51.12.160 15:28, 9 August 2012 (UTC))

Possible potions...

Do the thick, weak, and mundane potion bases really provide that few options for brewing, or has nobody bothered testing them yet? Cobalt32 02:40, 13 October 2011 (UTC)

They only make weakness potions for now. Calinou - talk × contribs » 06:09, 13 October 2011 (UTC)

Ah, so you pretty much need Nether Wart from a Fortress to make potions? Actually, that's probably not such a big deal since you need the fortress for Blaze Rods to make the brewing stand in the first place. Cobalt32 23:56, 13 October 2011 (UTC)

Yup, you absolutely need that netherwart. It's caused me (and likely a lot of other people) to set up MASSIVE netherwart farms near their portals. Blaze rods though, you only NEED one. Unless you want to make fire resistance potions. ;) --Draco18s 17:25, 31 January 2012 (UTC)

Alternative Methods of brewing some potions

I've noticed there's more than one way to make some of the potions on here; for example, potion of harming II can be made by adding a fermented spider eye to Poison II which IS in the list here, but adding glowstone dust to Harming I also makes Harming II which is not shown on the list. I'd add it but I can't quite figure it out. Srsguy 03:35, 14 October 2011 (UTC)

Also added Miner Key 15:18, 17 October 2011 (UTC)

What should i do with my findings?

I found that if you brew Instant healing potion with fermented spider eye, you get an instant harming potion. And if you brew a Regeneration potion with a fermented spider eye, you get a potion of weakness. Should these things be mentioned in this article? i think they should, I just don't know where to put it exactly. It would educate people so they dont waste resources. Please advise. - DxAxxxTyriel

Couple of notes

Like the updated, just wanted to leave a couple of notes. 1. Primary Potions should also have a separate Ingredients section. 2. Ingredients should be separate by plus signs just like on the Crafting page. Minor Conflict?

The Potions page says potions can go up to level IV, but here the highest you can brew is II. Is the level IV thing incorrect, or did the recipes to make level IV potions not get added due to repetition of previous ingredients? Cobalt32 14:19, 21 October 2011 (UTC)

Level IV potions are not implemented in the current system.--Yurisho 16:30, 22 October 2011 (UTC)

Potion Redirects

In the Minecraft 1.0.0 release on November 18, the potions system changed quite a bit, and I was wondering if we should reconsider making those potion redirects into individual pages?

It has been mentioned that the Brewing page should be treated the same way as the Crafting and Smelting pages, but while all the recipes are listed there, each of the items on those pages have their own individual pages (some are just stubs, though). Even dyes and wool have their own pages, although the block/item data values are the same (with different damage/metadata values).

I suggest that we either add the recipes to the Potions page (refer to Wool or Wool Dyes) or make separate stubs for all the individual potions (like Lime Dye or Magenta Dye), since as of Minecraft 1.0.0 potions are treated as individual items with distinct (but possibly multiple) recipes.

Of course, we might want to wait before changing anything, since the system might still change, but I feel something needs to eventually be done. Additionally, I believe it's better to have redundancy than to make it difficult to find information.

Any thoughts, ideas, or suggestions? Aeviternity 18:43, 25 November 2011 (UTC)

I think this is a good idea. Some of the effects are just glossed over, and this would give a place to give more details and different recipes when you want to know about one specific potion. As it is, it can be difficult to find the information you want about a specific potion. Lunakki 17:02, 1 December 2011 (UTC)
I added a topic to the community talk page, since I've seen this debate in other places as well. So far it hasn't gotten any feedback though. Link.

Ideas for the left-out potions.

For Water Breating...Ink Sack or something relating to Fish could go well with the Awkward Potion.

Potion of weakness

source code:

           i -= 2 << getActivePotionEffect(Potion.potionWeakness).getAmplifier();

For me it looks like damage get reduced by one heart, not halved. If somebody have sources for early versions, look into it and tell me was in EntityPlayer.attackTargetEntityWithCurrentItem(Entity entity) srtring like:

           i >> getActivePotionEffect(Potion.potionWeakness).getAmplifier();

Consistency: Ingredient or Reagent?

I think it would be better if the entire page uses a consistent term. Even when I was editing, I flicked between the two, i'm not sure which is better. The page might be confusing to readers. Although Reagent is probably the more accurate term, ingredient is universally understood, whereas reagent might not be.

This page is for common man, I support ingredient.--Yurisho 17:19, 1 January 2012 (UTC)
I'll change all to "ingredient" until theres any objection.2.218.15.135 20:15, 1 January 2012 (UTC)

Cauldrons more efficient?

In the history section it says that "The Cauldron's role in brewing was relegated to being a slightly more efficient storage vessel for water." I fail to see any way in which cauldrons are more efficient -- as the notes at the bottom of the page say, you can fill as many bottles as you have via a water source, but only three bottles via a cauldron, unless you keep refilling it. -- Miral 01:22, 11 January 2012 (UTC)

In a full inventory, it's a choice between filling 27 bottles of water or filling 26 buckets of water and bringing a cauldron. That would get around 3 times as many bottles of water. Obviously if you're standing next to water then it would be just be pointless extra steps using a Cauldron, but away from water, in the Nether particularly, it could be useful, if you're a potion making machine. It's worthy of a note but not in the History section. I'll move it and elaborate. 2.218.15.135 05:21, 22 January 2012 (UTC)
Couldn't you just bring one bucket of water, place it somewhere it won't flood anything important, then fill all your bottles from that? Cobalt32 17:27, 31 January 2012 (UTC)
You can't place water in Nether, it will evaporate instantly. --mgr 23:02, 31 January 2012 (UTC)
Can you even put water into a cauldron in the Nether?--Draco18s 17:20, 31 January 2012 (UTC)

Reverted means what?

The page as-is doesn't make clear what difference there is between reverted potions and their basic forms. They are functionally identical, that much is obvious; if there is some non-obvious distinction between reverted and basic, such as a difference in the item codes, the page should say as much. As-is, the "reverted" distinction appears entirely meaningless. LogicalDash 13:12, 26 January 2012 (UTC)

For what I understand a reverted potion is a potion made in a longer way then needed, like adding redstone and then glowstone to a potion, which is just like simply adding glowstone.--Yurisho 14:55, 26 January 2012 (UTC)

Messed up Template

I don't know if anyone else is having this problen, but the "pipes" between the ingredient and the potions on the animated brewing template are shifted to the left and up. Everything else is ok. Azdoine 22:13, 5 February 2012 (UTC)

Department of Redundancy Department

Seriously, this page is overloaded with recipes. If i want to brew a potion i just look at that excellent picture and ignore the rest of the page. Especially the "Recipes" section is really useless. Maybe you should clean up here a bit. --91.40.103.174 12:54, 2 March 2012 (UTC)

Yer, agreed. I moved that picture up top a while back because it was so good, and it sort of made most of the rest of the page redundant. Would need a consensus before cutting so much from the page. Would suck for whoever made the animated brewing pictures if that went. At least the "recipes" section should go. 94.9.169.154 03:44, 31 March 2012 (UTC)

New IDEA for Non-Splash poisons

The current use of non-splash poisons are fairly pointless. The only way they are really useful in any way is if you make them splash. That however wastes glass. So I purpose a new idea. And it won't replace the old use, just add a new one.
You would make the poison as a non-splash poison, then you could craft it with ANY tool and you would get a raw poison weapon. Then you would craft it with blaze powder, blaze rod, or fire charge to create a permanently poisoned weapon (until the weapons durability runs out). The strength of the poison would be based off of the starting poison.
Or instead you could add a new weapon; a dagger. The dagger would be faster, but much weaker. A wooden dagger for example would only do one heart of damage, compared to a wooden sword that does two hearts. The dagger would be scaled the same way as the sword with better materials as well. The upside of the dagger (if this option was chosen) would be that it could be poisoned. This would allow for easier killing of endermen because of their weakness to poison. Maybe later the weapons could be coated with other potion types. This is just an idea, I thought it would allow for poisons to be more sought after. --Vinlux 05:37, 6 July 2012 (UTC)

Another idea would be to add a potion of freezing. Make an awkward potion and then brew a snowball into the mix to make it. At tier one it will freeze a mob or opponent for 3 seconds allowing you to attack safely. At tier two after brewing in redstone it will freeze a mob or pvp opponent for 6 seconds. (correct me if i am wrong about the redstone :) Adding gunpowder would of course make it a splash potion. Now if YOU drink the potion you can walk through lava for the alloted freezing time but, you will be at crouch speed. Great attack potion. Not so much for a drink. So here is the one draw back. Because it is a FREEZING potion it will put out the heat from the blaze rod in your brewing stand and you must make a new one. Everthing in minecraft comes with a challenge so tell me what you all think! :) (71.51.12.160 15:43, 9 August 2012 (UTC))

First of all, this isn't the place for feature suggestions. I suggest you take it to the forums, or at least get a wiki account so you can put it on your own talk page. (Also, your suggestions are rather overpowered, especially when PvP is considered.) --Mental Mouse 23:47, 13 December 2012 (UTC)

How does it take forever (I'm sorry, "4ever") to make an infinite water source? Dig out a 2x2 square, dump a bucket of water in two cattycorner corners (or dig a 3-long line and dump a bucket of water in each end), and voila. ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 22:12, 21 December 2012 (UTC)
Furthermore, you don't even need an infinite water source, just a water source. Grab a bucket, fill it with water, and then make a 1x1 hole near your brewing stand, fill it by right clicking with your bucket of water. Now you can fill infinite glasses from that water. --Kahless61 22:29, 21 December 2012 (UTC)
