A view of hills during rain.

Rain is an environmental effect that occurs occasionally in Minecraft. As with snowfall, it is a type of weather.

Behavior

Beta Rain

Rain in the full game looks identical to rain in Classic.

Rain is a temporary, global occurrence[1] that can happen randomly at any time but not in Taiga, Tundra, Savannah, or Desert biomes (in Taiga and Tundra, it snows instead). If you are near to both a biome that produces rain and another that produces snow, you can see both snow and rain.

Effects

Rain and snow

File:2012-01-21 20.17.53.png

Two biomes showing two weather types.

  • Thunderstorms may occur.
  • The light from the sun decreases by 3, to light level 12 in full daylight. Moonlight is not reduced, and remains at light level 4.
  • The Sun, Moon and stars are no longer visible (even in the desert).[2]
  • The sky during the day is a grayish blue hue and clouds are gray instead of white.

Rain

  • It does not solidify lava or put out torches, but it does put out fires,[3] except those on netherrack.[4]
  • Mobs on fire are put out on contact with rain; this prevents skeletons and zombies from burning in daylight.
  • Flaming arrows are put out on contact with rain.
  • Fish are more abundant during rain.[5]
  • Wolves shake themselves dry (certain versions only).
  • Farmland becomes hydrated if it isn't already.[6]
  • Endermen may die due to their weakness to water. They will also teleport around until they find a place which is dry.
  • Blazes that entered the Overworld, either via a spawn egg or a Nether Portal, are also harmed by rain.
  • Rain fills up cauldrons with water, rarely.
  • Rain may cause frame rate drops, or as some people call it "lag," making it harder to play.

A Trial Key is an item found in Trial Chambers.

Its functionality remained a mystery for a pretty good time, but on the Minecraft Monthly of January 2024, it has been revealed to open vaults, which once opened will drop an item. It's still unknown what will the loot be, but was seen dispensing the following:
Enchanted iron helmet, enchanted iron leggings, enchanted crossbow, enchanted diamond chestplate, iron, gold and diamond horse armour, enchanted golden apple, saddle, enchanted diamond axe, enchanted iron pickaxe and enchanted iron Shovel.

The trial key can currently be obtained from trial spawners (50%), or from pots and chests (8%).

Rain was introduced purely for cosmetic purposes in Classic. The mechanics were simple, only testing if there is a block above to shelter the rain.

Raw cod is a food item that can be eaten by the player or cooked to make cooked cod.

Obtaining
Mob loot
Cod
Cod always drops 1 raw cod when killed, unaffected by Looting. If it is killed while on fire, it drops 1 cooked cod instead.

Dolphins
When killed, dolphins drop 0–1 raw cod. The maximum amount is increased by 1 per level of Looting, for a maximum of 0-4 with Looting III. If killed while on fire, they drop cooked cod instead.

Guardians and elder guardians
Guardians and elder guardians have a 40% and 50% chance, respectively, to drop raw cod when killed. java, cooked cod is dropped if a guardian is on fire when killed.

Guardians and elder guardians also have a 2.5% chance to drop a random fish, with 60% of them being raw cod, which drops as cooked if the guardian was on fire. The chance of getting the fish drop is increased by 1% per level with Looting (for a maximum of 5.5% with Looting III), but the type of fish is not affected.

Polar bears
Polar bears have a 75% chance of dropping 0–2 raw cod when killed. The maximum amount can be increased by 1 per level of Looting, for a maximum of 0-5 with Looting III. If killed while on fire, they drop cooked cod instead.

Fishing
Fishing

Raw cod can be obtained from fishing. The wait time of one being caught is decreased with the Lure enchantment and the chance of one being caught is slightly decreased with the Luck of the Sea enchantment (named as such because it increases treasure, not fish).

Catching cod awards 1-6 experience.

Natural generation
javaraw-cod

Villager gifts
java, fisherman villager<nowiki/>s throw raw cod at players under the Hero of the Village effect.

Usage
Smelting ingredient
Food
Raw cod restores 2 hunger and 0.4 saturation.

Cats
Raw cod can be used to tame cats with 1 chance of success, get cats off of chests, and beds, breed cats, and make baby cats grow up faster by 10% of the remaining time. Additionally, raw cod can be used to heal cats by .

Raw cod can be used to gain ocelot trust, breed ocelots, and make baby ocelots grow up by 10%.

Dolphins
Dolphins can be fed raw cod. Doing this improves their trust and interaction with the player. However, unlike most animals, feeding dolphins does not allow them to breed.

When a player feeds raw cod to a dolphin, it swims toward the nearest chest in an underwater ruins or shipwreck. If the chest in the nearest structure is broken, they swim to the next nearest structure that has a chest.

Trading
Fisherman villagers have 50% chance to sell 6 cooked cod for 6 raw cod and 1 emerald as part of their first tier trade.

Apprentice-level fisherman villagers have a 2 chance to buy 15 raw cod for an emerald in Java Edition, and always offer the same trade in Bedrock Edition.

Wolves
bedrock, raw cod can be used to feed wolves, to heal them by . However, unlike other meat items, raw cod cannot be used to speed up the growth of baby wolves nor used to breed them, thus making it only feedable when wolves are not at full health.

Compounds are a type of item from Education Edition used in chemistry, which are created from combinations of various elements.

Obtaining
Compounds cannot be obtained in the Creative inventory. They are only obtained from creating them in the compound creator. This is done by inserting a certain number of elements corresponding to the compound's chemical formula.

Garbage
Garbage is considered a "compound", but the only way to produce it is to activate the Lab Table when its inputs are an invalid recipe. It has no uses.

In the chemistry resource pack folder, there are numerous compound textures which are not used in the game. Note: a <code>compound</code> item with a data value of <code>38</code> will have the <code>Blue Flask</code> texture and will be called <code>item.compound..name</code>. If you use an NBT Editor to get a compound item with no assigned data value (by deleting the data tag) and then transfer that item to another world / realm using structure blocks (by exporting to a <code>.mcstructure</code> file, then importing it on another world or realm) then it will be renamed to <code>Ivory Tusk</code>.

A melon slice is a food item that can be eaten by the player.

Obtaining
Block loot
Melon slices can be obtained by breaking (harvesting) melons using any tool or by hand. Axes, followed by swords, are the fastest tools for harvesting melons. A melon drops 3–7 melon slices, when broken; by hand, using a tool, or after being broken by the movement of a piston, with an average of 4.64 slices per melon.

Breaking a melon with a tool enchanted with Fortune increases the potential number of drops by 1 slice per level, up to a maximum of 9 slices.

Usage
To eat a melon slice, press and hold use while it is selected in the hotbar. Eating one restores 2 hunger and 1.2 hunger

The Reality vision was a joke helmet.

Usage
Reality vision was equipped via the helmet slot. When equipped, it showed a minimap in the bottom-center of the screen (which moved when the player's camera moves). The minimap showed all chunks that were currently rendered. The player's location was represented by a green beacon beam marker on the map.

It displayed a vision overlay (similar to the pumpkin overlay). The overlay would change to a new overlay if the player went into third person (unlike the pumpkin overlay), which made the screen appear like an old television screen. The overlay was called <code>cantseeshit<!-- Do not change this; this is that word that is actually used-->captain.png</code> in the assets folder. It activated a shader when equipped (<code>scan_pincushion</code>).

The Ankle monitor was a joke foot item.

Usage
Ankle monitors were equipped in the boots slot. In survival mode, when equipped, it could not be taken off. However, players in Creative mode are unaffected.

When equipped, the player would be afflicted with Slowness I.

During the night, being a certain number of blocks from the world spawn, above a certain minimum, how much? would prompt the following message in chat: "CURFEW WARNING! You are violating your house arrest! Get back by [distance] meters!"

If in the Nether or the End, a different set of messages would be cycled through which can be seen in the section below.

Nether and End messages
* CURFEW WARNING! You are violating your house arrest! Uuuh... where are you anyway?
* CURFEW WARNING! Hello, are you there?
* CURFEW WARNING! I'm sure you have important things to do, but you need to go back!
* CURFEW WARNING! We're lonely back home!
* CURFEW WARNING! By "we" I mean I. I'm lonely.
* CURFEW WARNING! Ok enough games... GET BACK RIGHT NOW!
* CURFEW WARNING! LAST WARNING!
* CURFEW WARNING! LASTEST WARNING (really now)
* CURFEW WARNING! ...
* CURFEW WARNING! So... Where are you?
* CURFEW WARNING! Having a good day?
* CURFEW WARNING! Did you see that monster over there?
* CURFEW WARNING! Give it a whack, if you would be so kind.
* CURFEW WARNING! Teheee...
* CURFEW WARNING! Ok, enough of this!
* CURFEW WARNING! Last straw!
* CURFEW WARNING! Now you die.
* CURFEW WARNING! Boom!
* CURFEW WARNING! Hehe, fun right?
* CURFEW WARNING! Ok, you will not hear anything more from me now!
* CURFEW WARNING! You'll be as lonely as I am.
* CURFEW WARNING! How does that feel?
* CURFEW WARNING! Stop. Please. Stupid.
* CURFEW WARNING! I know, I'll wipe my memory. That way, I can start over!
* CURFEW WARNING! *bzzzzttt*

Pottery sherds and it can be rotated. Chains connect horizontally or vertically, but not across different orientations (so a chain with N orientation does not connect to a chain with E orientation in the adjacent block).
Horizontal chains one block above a surface may be walked over. Horizontal chains two blocks above a surface prevent players from traveling past them. Vertical chains block travel if targeted directly, but may be skirted.

Precision is required, but chains can be walked on, allowing for inconspicuous, although somewhat costly, bridges.

Chains can be pushed by pistons without being broken.

* A vertical chain, being a solid, but not a full block, allows for many sizes of mobs and players to pass alongside each piece horizontally.
* Despite its name, it cannot be crafted into chainmail armor.
* Chains do not stick together when moved by pistons, regardless of orientation.

Trivia

Afterglow of the Sun

You cannot see the sun while it is raining, so you will see this afterglow during sunrise.

Void Rain

Rain falling into the void.

  • Rain falls at approximately the same speed one can descend while flying. This means that it is actually possible to free fall faster than the rain particles.
    • If you fly up when it rains, the rain appears to fall faster. if you fly down while it rains, it will make the raindrops appear to be frozen in time.
  • If you turn particles to minimal, the rain is silent.
  • Rain falls only in the two middle lines of a block, therefore it looks like it is not raining directly above you, but actually the "square" in the sky is shifted half a block in each direction.
  • Although you cannot see the sun during rain, the glow associated with sunrise and sunset is still visible.
  • When the player uses a Bed, the rain stops when they wake up.
  • Rain still falls above the clouds. Notch's explanation is that the gray above the clouds during a storm is another layer of clouds and the origin of the rain.[8]
  • Rain particles are only visible in nearby chunks, but its effects occur over all loaded areas.
  • Although falling precipitation can be seen far above the maximum world height, rain falls from y=256. Raindrop splash particles can be seen on top of blocks of layer 255, even in biomes where it cannot rain.
  • Rain actually falls one block into the void (Layer -1). This can be seen in Creative Mode by floating in the Void. Note that no particles are emitted from the rain, due to the absence of a block below it.
  • Rain makes noise when it hits a block, and the noise can be heard at any point within 16 blocks. This means that if the player is flying in creative mode at least sixteen blocks above the nearest block rain is hitting, the player cannot hear the rain.
    • Rain doesn't generate particles and sound at y=1 (and below), despite the bedrock under it.
  • Rain falls through ladders, vines, carpets, repeaters, snow layers, mob heads, flower pots and cobwebs, but it's stopped by signs, banners, doors, gates, trapdoors, pressure plates, glass panes and iron bars.
  • The average rainfall lasts .5-1 days, and there is a .5 to 7.5 day delay between rainstorms.
  • The player can sleep in a bed during a thunderstorm, even if it is daytime.
