Moon

A full moon.

The Moon is a sprite that appears during night time.

The moon illuminates topmost blocks during the night in the same way that the sun illuminates them in the day, but only illuminates them to a Light level of four, rather than the sun's fifteen. You can track the moon's and sun's progress using a Clock.

Grass blocks or Saplings do not grow in moonlight, however they won't decay in moonlight either.

Phases of the Moon

Moon Phases

The moon, showing its phases (viewed on the western sky).

The Moon goes through eight lunar phases, and changes phase every night. The phases are (in chronological order):

  • New Moon
  • Waxing Crescent
  • First Quarter
  • Waxing Gibbous
  • Full Moon
  • Waning Gibbous
  • Last Quarter
  • Waning Crescent

This allows the player to keep rough track of the passage of time, even after spending a few game days underground.

Comparison to Real-world Calendars

In the real world, the lunar cycle is 29½ days, which is the basis for our months. However, most real-world calendars are dominated by the longer solar cycle, which produces our year. In Minecraft, the "lunar month" is only eight game days (closer to a week), and there is no trace of a solar cycle. One could certainly build larger calendars by grouping lunar "monthweeks", but any such system is necessarily arbitrary. Then too, animal and crop growth (which drove the development of real-world calendars) take place in game days, while their real-world equivalents require months or years.

One Minecraft lunar cycle takes 2 hours 40 minutes of play time and three lunar cycles take 8 hours of playtime. This means there are 9 lunar cycles in one real-world day (24 hours) of play. (Beds notwithstanding!)

Mobs

Main article: Mobs

The moon and its different phases have two subtle effects on mob spawning, introduced in recent versions:

As of version 1.4.2, Slimes can spawn on the surface in swamp biomes at night, and the numbers of slimes spawning are proportional to the moon's fullness; most numerous at the full moon, but none at the new moon. This does not influence the old-style spawning of slimes, in designated chunks below 40th level.

As of version 1.6.1, the moon's phase will affect the chances of certain monster buffs taking effect. All of these effects combine with the new "inhabited chunk" mechanic; for an early game, the moon phase will dominate, but over time it will be overshadowed by the effects of long-term residence in a chunk. On a fuller moon (or more time spent in a chunk), skeletons and zombies have a higher chance to be able to pick up items, and to spawn with weapons and armor. Furthermore, there is a higher chance for their equipment to be enchanted, and if it is, the enchantment levels will be higher. On Hard mode, a fuller moon phase (or longer residence in a chunk) also give spiders a higher chance to spawn with random status effects.

Stars

Together with the moon, the night sky also consists of stars. In current versions, the stars appear as bright points, and the starfield rotates as the night progresses. Because the stars ascent in the east and descend in the west like all celestial bodies, you may navigate by looking at them even when the moon should be invisible. Furthermore the movement of the stars relative to the horizon may be observed more easily and quickly than the movement of the moon in the middle of the sky.

Usage
Empty buckets can be used to "pick up" a water or lava source block by pressing use item on a block of the relevant type. If the empty bucket is part of a stack and the player's inventory is full, the filled bucket drops in front of the player as an item.

A bucket filled with a source block can then be used to place its source block contents in the empty block next to the side of the block the player is currently looking at, or replacing the block looked at for some replaceable blocks.

One can press use when looking at a cow, mooshroom, or goat to fill a bucket with milk. A bucket full of milk can be emptied only by drinking it or by using it in crafting a recipe (like cake).

A bucket full of water can be used on a live aquatic mob (cod, salmon, tropical fish, pufferfish, axolotl, or tadpole) to collect the mob in the bucket for transportation to another location. The mob in item form becomes a bucket of aquatic mob.

An empty bucket can be used to empty a cauldron with water or lava, filling the bucket with the fluid. This does not work with dispensers.

A lava bucket placed in the fuel slot of a furnace becomes an empty bucket after the lava is consumed during smelting.

An empty bucket fills with water when placed in the fuel slot of a furnace while smelting a wet sponge.

An empty bucket can be used to collect powder snow, filling the bucket with powder snow. Emptying the powder snow bucket places the powder snow block in the empty block next to the side of the block the player is currently looking at.

Beta 1.9-pre4Added eight lunar phases to the moon.
The moon is now round.
Beta 1.9-pre6Moon is reverted back to original square form and lunar phases converted to square form.
Before, the Minecraft sun and moon rose in the north.[1] This was a bug, but was left in the game for some time.[2] Now the sun and moon rise in the east.[3]

Raw salmon is a food item that can be eaten by the player or cooked to make cooked salmon.

Obtaining
Mob loot
Salmon
Salmon always drops 1 raw salmon when killed, unaffected by Looting. If it is killed while on fire, it drops 1 cooked salmon instead.
Guardians and elder guardians
Guardians and elder guardians have a 2.5% chance to drop a random fish, with 25% of them being raw salmon, which drops as cooked if the guardian was on fire. The chance of getting the fish drop is increased by 1% per level with Looting (for a maximum of 5.5% with Looting III), but the type of fish is not affected.
Polar bears
Polar bears have a 25% chance of dropping 0–2 raw salmon when killed. The maximum amount can be increased by 1 per level of Looting, for a maximum of 0-5 with Looting III. If killed while on fire, they drop cooked salmon instead.
Fishing
FishingRaw salmon can be obtained from fishing. The wait time of one being caught is decreased with the Lure enchantment and the chance of one being caught is slightly decreased with the Luck of the Sea enchantment (named as such because it increases treasure, not fish).

Catching salmon awards 1-6 experience.

Chest loot
raw-salmon

Villager gifts
java, Fisherman villagers throw raw salmon at players under the Hero of the Village effect.

Usage
Smelting ingredient
Food
Raw salmon restores 2 hunger and 0.2 saturation.

Cats
Raw salmon can be used to tame cats with 1 chance of success, get cats off of chests, and beds, breed cats, and make baby cats grow up faster by 10% of the remaining time. Additionally, raw salmon can be used to heal cats by .

Raw salmon can be used to gain ocelot trust, breed ocelots, and make baby ocelots grow up by 10%.
Dolphins
A dolphin can be fed raw salmon to increase its trust of the player and cause it to interact with the player more often. However, unlike most other animal mobs, this does not cause them to breed.

Additionally, dolphins swim to the nearest chest in a shipwreck or underwater ruin after they are fed raw salmon. If the chest in the nearest structure is broken, they swim to another structure with a chest.

Trading
Apprentice-level Fisherman villagers have 50%bedrock or 2java chance to buy 6 raw salmon and one emerald for 6 cooked salmon.

Journeyman-level Fisherman villagers offer to buy 13 raw salmon for an emerald.

Wolves
bedrock, raw salmon can be fed only to wolves not at full health, healing them by . Unlike other wolf food, raw salmon cannot be used to breed wolves or to accelerate the growth of baby wolves.

Unit repair
Helmets can be repaired in an anvil by adding units of the armor material's repair material, with each repair material restoring 25% of the helmet's maximum durability, rounded down.

Mob loot
If a zombie, husk, stray or skeleton is wearing armor, there is a 8.5% chance (9.5% with Looting I, 10.5% with Looting II and 11.5% with Looting III) for the mob to drop a helmet upon death. The dropped helmet is usually badly damaged, and may be enchanted with enchantment levels 5-19.

bedrock, vindicators and pillagers spawned in raids have a 8.3525% chance (10.28% on hard) to drop iron helmets. The dropped helmets are usually badly damaged, and have a 50% chance of being enchanted with a random enchantment.

Natural generation
Two armor stands are found in each taiga village outdoor armory, one of them equipped with an iron helmet.

Chest loot
BE, a sealed room in woodland mansions can appear that has a chest sometimes containing an Efficiency I leather cap.

Trading
java, novice-level armorer villagers have a 40% chance to sell an iron helmet for 4 emeralds. Journeyman-level armorers have a 40% chance to sell a chainmail helmet for 1 emerald. Master-level armorers always sell an enchanted diamond helmet for 11-27 emeralds. Apprentice-level leatherworker villagers have a 2 chance to sell a leather cap for 5 emeralds. Master-level leatherworker villagers offer the same trade.

Armorer villagers may give the players with the Hero of the Village effect a chainmail helmet.

bedrock, novice-level armorer villagers have a 25% chance to sell iron helmet for 5 emeralds, 1 chance to sell chainmail helmet at journeyman-level for an emerald, and 50% chance to sell enchanted diamond helmet for 8 emeralds at master-level. Apprentice-level leatherworker villagers have a 50% chance to sell leather cap for 5 emeralds as part of their trades, and 50% chance to sell an enchanted leather cap for 5 emeralds at the master level.

Usage
Helmets can be placed in the top armor slot of a player's inventory for activation.

Defense points
Defense points are each signified by half of a shirt of mail in the armor bar above the health bar. Each defense point reduces any damage dealt to the player that is absorbed by armor by 4%, increasing additively with the number of defense points. Different materials and combinations of armor provide different levels of defense.

The following table shows the number of defense points added by helmets.

{| class="wikitable" data-description="Helmet defense points"

Knockback resistance
A netherite helmet provides 10% knockback resistance.

Durability
The following table shows the amount of damage each piece of armor can absorb before being destroyed.

Any "hit" from a damage source that can be blocked by armor removes one point of durability from each piece of armor worn for every 4 of incoming damage (rounded down, but never below 1). Damage taken that armor doesn't protect (such as falling or drowning) does not damage the armor, even if it is enchanted to protect against that type of damage. The following chart displays how many hits helmets can endure.

Netherite armor is not damaged by lava or fire when worn.

Repair
Helmets may be repaired by using them along with some of their crafting material (leather, gold ingots, iron ingots, diamonds or netherite) in an anvil. Chainmail helmets may be repaired in this way with iron ingots. They may also be repaired by crafting them together with another helmet of like material.

Enchantments
A helmet can receive the following enchantments. Note that while iron and chainmail have the same durability, chainmail has a higher enchantability than iron or diamond.

Turtle shell effect
Equipping a Turtle Shell turtle shell provides the Water Breathing status effect, allowing the player to remain underwater for an additional 10 seconds. The time that this effect lasts does not begin to count down until the player dives underwater, then the 10 seconds are counted down. The effect immediately recharges after exposure to air.

Brewing ingredient
A turtle shell can also be used as a potion brewing ingredient.

Smelting usage
Piglins
Piglin are attracted to golden helmets and pick them up, examining them for 6 to 8 seconds. Piglins can wear other helmets but are not attracted to them. They prefer stronger helmets over weaker helmets, with one exception: They always prefer golden helmets, throwing out stronger helmets in favor of gold helmets. Enchanted helmets are preferred over unenchanted helmets.

Trivia
*Unlike the other helmets, the netherite helmet covers most of the player's face, due to a nose guard and cheek plates.
*The turtle shell is the only helmet that is not part of a complete set.
* In Bedrock Edition, there exists a bug that makes it possible to obtain a Leather Cap enchanted with Efficiency I from Woodland Mansion chests with a chance of 1.45%. The enchantment has no effect on the cap, however.

Mobs
A zombified piglin that spawns as a strider jockey holds a warped fungus on a stick instead of a golden sword, and has an 8.5% or 25% chance to drop it if killed by a player or tamed wolf, or upon death when angry. chance is increased by 1% or 5% per level of Looting, for a maximum of 11.5% or 40% with Looting III.

Usage
Similar to how a carrot on a stick is used to control pigs, the players can use a warped fungus on a stick to control a strider. To do this, the player simply holds the item in one hand and any nearby striders within view is attracted toward the player. If mounted on a saddled strider, the strider moves in the direction the player is facing while holding the warped fungus on a stick. Right clicking with the item makes the strider go faster, but reduces the item's durability by 1 for every speed boost. If the item durability reaches 0, it turns into a fishing rod.

Due to a strider's ability to walk on lava, this is a beneficial tool for using striders as a safe transport across the Nether's terrain, which is otherwise considered difficult to traverse.

Enchantments
A warped fungus on a stick can receive the following enchantments, but only through an anvil:

Glow berries are a food item obtained from cave vines and can be used to plant them.

Cave vines are a climbable, bonemealable plant that hangs off ceilings and grows glow berries. Cave vines with glow berries produce light and drop glow berries when broken or harvested. Cave vines with no glow berries will not drop anything.

Obtaining
Natural generation
Cave vines can be found in lush caves, hanging from cave ceilings.

Chest loot
glow-berries

Post-generation
Glow berries can be collected from a cave vine by using or breaking the vine. This yields one glow berry when the vine is bearing them and nothing when it is not. A cave vine also breaks if water runs over its location or if a piston extends or pushes a block into its location.

bedrock, using a tool with Silk Touch on cave vines always yields a glow berry, even if the vine appears empty.

Fortune has no effect on the number of glow berries dropped.

Usage
Placement
Glow berries can be placed on and grown from the bottom of most blocks. They have no specific lighting requirements. When placed, they can be of any length.

Growth
Placing glow berries on the bottom of a block creates a cave vine that grows downward one block at a time as long as air is beneath it and its maximum height (2 to 26 blocks) has not been reached. Each newly-grown cave vine block has a 1 in 9 chance of bearing glow berries. Only this tip can ever naturally grow them.JEexact growth rate and chance to bear glow berries

Using bone meal on a cave vine produces glow berries if the vine was not bearing any.

Java, cave vines stop growing if shears are used on the tip.

bedrock, if placing glow berries in the Nether, cave vines are able to grow and produces glow berries.

Food
To eat glow berries, press and hold use while it is selected in the hotbar. Eating one restores 2 hunger and 0.4 hunger saturation points, like sweet berries.

Light
When bearing glow berries, cave vines give off a light level of 14.

Composting
Placing glow berries into a composter by using them on it has a 30% chance of raising the compost level by 1.

Breeding
Glow berries can be fed to foxes to breed them. Foxes are similar to cats when being fed as a wild animal; a sudden movement by the player may cause the fox to flee even if the player holds glow berries. The resulting baby fox trusts the player and does not flee.

Glow berries can be used on baby foxes to reduce the time until they grow by 10%.

Redstone dust is a mineral that can transmit redstone power as a wire when placed as a block. It is also used in crafting and brewing.

Obtaining
Mining
Redstone Ore#Natural generation
Redstone ore mined using an iron pickaxe or higher drops 4 or 5 redstone dust (or more with Fortune, averaging at 6 redstone dust with Fortune III). If mined with Silk Touch, the block drops itself instead of redstone dust.

Natural generation
15 lengths of redstone dust are naturally generated as part of the trap in each jungle pyramid. 5 lengths of redstone dust can be found in one type of jail cell room in a woodland mansion. In ancient cities, multiple pieces of redstone dust can be found integrated into circuitry.

Breaking
Redstone dust can be broken instantly using any tool, or without a tool, and drops itself as an item.

Redstone dust is removed and drops as an item if:
* its attachment block is moved, removed, or destroyed
* water or lava flows into its space
* a piston tries to push it or moves a block into its space

Mob loot
Witches have a chance of dropping 0–2 redstone dust upon death. This is increased by 1 per level of Looting, for a maximum of 0–5 redstone dust.

Chest loot
redstone

Crafting
Redstone dust can be crafted from blocks of redstone.

bedrock, novice-level cleric villagers sell four redstone dust for one emerald.

Villager gifts
Tutorials/Raid farming
Java, when the player has the Hero of the Village status effect, clerics might throw that player a redstone dust as a gift.

Usage
Redstone dust is used for brewing, crafting, and in redstone circuits by placing it on the ground to create redstone wire. It can also be used to power redstone components.

Top Right: Redstone wire does not connect diagonally vertically through opaque blocks. Center: Redstone wire gets darker as its power level drops, to a maximum of 15 blocks from a power source.|thumb]]

Redstone dust can be placed on opaque blocks as well as glowstone, upside-down slabs, glass, upside-down stairs, and hoppers. It can also be placed on some transparent blocks; see Opacity/Placement for more information. It cannot be placed suspended in midair, even with commands, which is not unintentional.

Redstone wire configures itself to point toward adjacent redstone power components and transmission component connection points. Redstone wire also configures itself to point toward adjacent redstone wire one block higher or lower – unless there is a solid opaque block above the lower redstone wire.

If there is only one such adjacent redstone component, redstone wire configures itself into a redstone-dust line pointing both at the neighbor and away from it. If there are two or more such adjacent components, redstone wire connects them in the form of redstone-dust, redstone-dust-upleft, redstone-dust-t-up, or redstone-dust-cross as needed.

When there are no adjacent components, a single redstone wire configures itself into a redstone-dust-cross plus sign, which can provide power in all four directions. By right-clicking it can be changed into a redstone-dust-dot dot, which does not provide power to any of the four directions.

bedrock, redstone wire automatically configures itself to point toward adjacent blocks or mechanism components. java, it does not. If such a configuration is desired, the other neighbors of the redstone wire must be arranged to create it, i.e the redstone dust must be placed in a way that it would be pointed at the block’s location even if it were not there.

When redstone wire is reconfigured after placement, it does not update other redstone components around it of the change unless that reconfiguration also includes a change in power level or another component provides an update. This can create situations where a mechanism component remains activated when it shouldn't, or vice versa, until it receives an update from something else – a "feature" of redstone wire that can be used to make a block update detector.

Redstone wire can transmit power, which can be used to operate mechanism components (doors, pistons, redstone lamps, etc.).
Redstone wire can be "powered" by a number of methods:
* from an adjacent power component or a strongly-powered block
* from the output of a redstone repeater or redstone comparator
* from adjacent redstone wire. The powering dust can be a level higher or lower, but with restrictions:
** Redstone dust can be powered by redstone dust that is one level lower, or on an opaque block one level higher. A transparent block cannotjava pass power downward.
** The block "between" the two dust blocks must be air or transparent. A solid block there "cuts" the connection between the higher and lower dust.

The "power level" of redstone dust can vary from 0 to 15. Most power components power-up adjacent redstone dust to power level 15, but a few (daylight sensors, trapped chests, and weighted pressure plates) may create a lower power level. Redstone repeaters output power level 15 (when turned on), but redstone comparators may output a lower power level.

{{Schematic | caption =

Power level drops by 1 for every block of redstone wire it crosses. Thus, redstone wire can transmit power for no more than 15 blocks. To go further, the power level must be re-strengthened – typically with a redstone repeater.

Powered redstone wire on top of, or pointing at, an opaque block provides weak power to the block. A weakly-powered block cannot power other adjacent redstone wire, but can still power redstone repeaters and comparators, and activate adjacent mechanism components. Transparent blocks cannot be powered.

When redstone wire is unpowered, it appears dark red. When powered, it becomes bright red at power level 15, fading to darker shades with decreasing power. Powered redstone wire also produces "dust" particles of the same color.

While redstone wire always provides power to the directions it points into, it can still point into directions in which it cannot give power. If redstone wire comes in the form of a cross, the player can right-click to toggle it between a cross and dot. A redstone dot does not power anything adjacent to it, but powers the block under it.

A diamond is a mineral that can only be obtained from diamond ore, loot chests and suspicious blocks. It is required to craft diamond tools and armor (and therefore obtain obsidian to access the Nether), enchanting tables, jukeboxes and duplicate smithing templates.

Mining
Diamond Ore#Natural generation
Diamond ore can be mined using an iron pickaxe or stronger. An ore drops a single diamond. If mined by any other tool, it drops nothing. If the pickaxe is enchanted with Fortune, it can drop an extra diamond per level of Fortune, allowing for a maximum of 4 diamonds with Fortune III. If the ore is mined using a pickaxe enchanted with Silk Touch, it drops an ore block rather than a diamond. The ore is found at level 15 or lower, most commonly between -50 and -64; levels -58 and -59 are the preferred levels to mine at since they don't contain bedrock, as it starts spawning at -60.

bedrock, expert-level armorer, toolsmith, and weaponsmith villagers buy one diamond for an emerald as part of their trades.

java, journeyman-level armorer villagers have a 40% chance of offering to buy one diamond for one emerald. Expert-level toolsmith villagers have 2 chance of offering to buy one diamond for one emerald. Expert-level weaponsmith villagers always offer to buy one diamond for one emerald.

Repairing
Diamonds are the repair items for the diamond tier and armor material, and thus can be used to repair the following items in an anvil or grindstone:
* Diamond Helmet
* Diamond Chestplate
* Diamond Leggings
* Diamond Boots
* Diamond Sword
* Diamond Pickaxe
* Diamond Axe
* Diamond Shovel
* Diamond Hoe

Trivia
*Unlike in Minecraft, newly mined diamonds in real life are rough, cloudy stones. The largest, purest ones are polished into crystal-clear gemstones, while the rest are used in industry for cutting and grinding.
*Although diamonds themselves are not renewable, all tools, weapons, and armor made from diamonds can be acquired through trading, and are therefore renewable. Other items crafted from diamonds are not renewable.
*In the April fools version Java Edition 2.0, diamond chickens can lay diamonds. This does not exist in newer versions, as this was a joke.
*The item forms of diamonds and turtle eggs have the same shape.

The night sky is now dark blue instead of black. (version exclusive)

Trivia

  • Night time lasts 7 minutes, excluding 1.5 minutes each for sunrise and sunset.
  • The Moon and Sun are not visible while using a render distance of less than four chunks.
  • If a player is viewing themselves from the front in third person, during moonrise, the moon will appear red.
  • Whereas Earth's Sun and Moon move slowly against the stars (the Moon moves more quickly than the sun), the Minecraft Moon and Sun are fixed in the Sky relative to each other and the stars.
    • Thus, Minecraft cannot have eclipses, nor can the moon show in a daytime sky... at least from surface level.
    • However, if you are some distance above the surface, you can often see both moon and sun at the same time, as the "hidden" of the pair is visible past the edge of the furthest loaded chunks. At level 80 or 90, this is prominent around dawn and dusk, but above cloud level, both moon and sun may be visible for much of the day.
  • The (default) appearance of the moon is not consistent with it being an actual body in the Minecraft sky.
    • The Minecraft Moon appears to be lit from a source in the north or south, whereas it "should" be lit from the east or west (by the sun). (For that matter, being fixed opposite to the sun, it "should" be constantly full.)
    • The shadow on the moon appears to be a pixelated circle. This suggests that the moon is round, despite its square outline.
  • There is no explicit command to change the Moon's phase, but using time add 24000 will advance it to the next phase. Using time add 168000 will advance it to the previous phase (of the next cycle).
  • The Moon can be used to tell time in Minecraft; in real life there is roughly one full moon in a month. Therefor a case can be made that there are actually forty-five months in a Minecraft year.
    • This also shows that moon-phase time is better suited for weeks in Minecraft, because forty-five is a lot closer to 52, the number of weeks in a real year, than to twelve, the number of months in a real year.
