Template:BlockTileEntity Mob heads are decorative blocks. There are five variants of mob heads: Skeleton, Wither Skeleton, Zombie, The Player and Creeper.
Obtaining
Mob heads can be broken using any tool, and will drop itself when broken. If a player head has a custom skin, the skin will be preserved when broken.
Block | Hardness | Tool | Breaking time[A] | ||||||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Default | Wooden | Stone | Iron | Diamond | Netherite | Golden | Shears | Sword | |||
Mob head | 1 | — | 1.5 | — | — | — | — | — | — | — | — |
- ↑ Times are for unenchanted tools as wielded by players with no status effects, measured in seconds. For more information, see Breaking § Speed.
If a head is pushed by a piston, or comes in contact with water or lava, it will break off as an item.
Drops
A wither skeleton has a 2.5% chance of dropping a wither skeleton skull when killed by the player or tamed wolf.
Skeleton, Wither Skeleton, Zombie, and Creeper heads are also dropped by the respective mob if it dies due to a charged creeper's explosion. Player heads can only be obtained with commands or with the creative inventory.
Usage
The main use of heads is for decoration. They can be oriented in 16 different directions on top of a block, and 4 directions on the sides of blocks, similar to signs. They cannot be placed on top of each other.
The player can also wear heads, similarly to pumpkins. This will overlay the second layer of the player's skin.
Occasionally, another mob may pick up a skull and wear it just as the player would. The only mobs which can pick up heads are skeletons, wither skeletons, zombies, and zombie pigmen. Commands can be used to make other mobs wear heads.
Withers
Wither skeleton skulls are essential for spawning a Wither. To do so, place 4 soul sand in a vertical T-shape, then place three wither skeleton skulls on top. The orientation of the skulls does not matter.
Crafting ingredient
Heads are used in the crafting of Firework Stars and Banners. Firework rockets crafted with said stars will have an explosion shaped like a Creeper face, regardless of which type of head was used. Banners crafted with heads will show the respective pattern on the banners.
Name | Ingredients | Crafting recipe | Description |
---|---|---|---|
Banner Pattern Creeper | Paper + Creeper Head |
Creeper face | |
Banner Pattern Skull | Paper + Wither Skeleton Skull |
Skeleton skull and crossbones | |
Firework Star | Any Mob head + Gunpowder + Any Dye |
Forms Creeper shape |
Player skins
Human heads have an extra usage for map makers, they can be given NBT data so that they appear with the skin of any Minecraft account. This means if you know that a specific account has a head which you want to display, you can edit the NBT data to make it appear.
The command to give yourself a head skinned as another player is /give <target> skull 1 3 {SkullOwner:"<PlayerName>"}
.
Mojang skins
Mojang has created a number of accounts with specific skins, so that map makers can use common heads without the risk that someone will change their skin.[1] These accounts have names in the format MHF_<MobName>
, for example MHF_PigZombie
is the name of a Minecraft user with a Zombie Pigman head. MHF stands for "Marc's Head Format". There are also a few blocks and "bonus" heads, for more variety.

The compass points to spawn when viewed in any way, including as a dropped item, in a player's hand, in an inventory or the crafting table, or in an item frame. The direction the needle points to is relative to the player who is viewing it. When a compass in an item frame is rotated, the needle turns accordingly. In the Nether or the End, the compass' needle spins and points in random directions. The compass can be used on a lodestone, after which it is named lodestone compass by default and points to that lodestone as long as the compass is in the same dimension as the lodestone, but if the compass is taken to a different dimension, it spins randomly, as a normal compass would in the Nether or the End. If the lodestone is destroyed, it also spins randomly, even if the lodestone is replaced afterward. However, if a lodestone compass is placed in storage, the lodestone can be broken and replaced without the compass losing the attunement, as long as the compass remains in storage while the lodestone is missing. A lodestone compass appears enchanted, similar to the enchanted golden apple. Using setworldspawn to change the world spawn also changes where the compass points. === Crafting ingredient === Compass, Compass.gif === Anvil usage === === Trading === A single compass can be sold to a journeyman-level cartographer villager for 1 emerald.java A single compass can be sold to an expert-level cartographer villager for 1 emerald as their sixth trade.bedrock A compass is also part of the cost of explorer maps: * An ocean explorer map and/or a woodland explorer map can be bought from a journeyman-level cartographer for 12 emeralds and one compass, as part of their fifth trade.bedrock * java, apprentice-level cartographer villagers offer to sell an ocean explorer map for 13 emeralds and a compass, and journeyman-level cartographer villagers offer to sell a woodland explorer map for 14 emeralds and one compass. === Enchantments === A compass can receive the following enchantments: {|class="wikitable col-2-center col-3-right" |+ !Name !Max Level !Method |- |Curse of Vanishing |I |Anvil |- |} == Sounds == java: bedrock: == Data values == === ID === java: bedrock: === Item data === java: Player.dat format
* compound: The item's tag tag.
bedrock: : See Bedrock Edition level format/Item format. == Advancements == Country Lode == History == java alpha java beta java {{History||1.5|snap=13w02a| Compasses now, instead of splitting two textures, use the new animation feature included in texture packs. The tripwire remains active until there are no entities intersecting its collision mask. Thrown potions, some arrows, thrown ender pearls, and thrown eyes of ender do not activate tripwire. ;Behavior An active tripwire updates adjacent blocks (for example, it can activate a BUD circuit). Additionally, active tripwires that are part of valid tripwire circuits cause the attached tripwire hooks to activate (producing redstone power). Active tripwires do not themselves produce redstone power. They are used to craft in-game representations of NBT tags. ==Obtaining== A stonecutter can be used to cut a name tag into either 16 "Name" or 16 "Tag" items. These can be cut into 16 Bit items each. To be able to proceed from here the
nbt_crafting
vote must be approved. Bits can be used in a crafting table to craft Left Curly, Right Curly, Left Square, and Right Square. In appears like these are the only tag items that can be crafted from Bits. A crafting table can be used to convert a "Tag" item into a "Byte Tag." The amount of sticks added to the crafting recipe specifies the value of the Byte, as a signed 8-bit value. For example, a "Tag" and a full stack of sticks make a Byte with the value
64b
, while 255 sticks result in
-1b
. Only one of the sticks is consumed. Two Bytes can be crafted into a "Short Tag" (equivalent to 16 bit), two Shorts into an "Int Tag" (equivalent to 32 bit), and two Ints into a "Long Tag" (equivalent to 64 bit). Many other combinations that form either 16, 32, or 64 bit are possible. For example, two Shorts and an Int make a Long. When combining values, their digits are stuck together in the given order, e.g.
1b
and
0b
make
256s
(equivalent to 010016 in hexadecimal). Undoing any of these crafting actions in e.g. a stonecutter is not possible. "Float" and "Double Tags" can be crafted by adding one or two boats to any numeric tag. A "String Tag" is crafted with a "Tag" and a piece of string. {{Crafting |Byte Tag; Byte Tag; Byte Tag |Byte Tag; Byte Tag; Byte Tag | ; Byte Tag; Byte Tag | ; Byte Tag; Byte Tag | ; ; Byte Tag | ; ; Byte Tag | ; ; Byte Tag | ; ; Byte Tag |Output= Short Tag; Int Tag; Long Tag |description=Shorts and Ints can be combined the same way, even mixed. Unnamed Names and Strings always produce a "Sssyntax Error". None of the other tag items can be named. All these items can be combined in a crafting table to form a short sequence of JSON code, as long as the resulting syntax is valid. For example: *A pair of Curlies that enclose a named "Name" item and some value, e.g. a Byte, create a "Compound Tag" with the content
{Example:0b}
. **Because of the limited size of the crafting table only 3 name-value pairs can be put between Curlies at a time. Compound Tags of any length can be created by concatenating two or more Compound Tags. **An empty pair of Curlies produces an empty Compound Tag with the content
{}
. *A pair of Square brackets that enclose any number of values, e.g. 7 Bytes, create a "List Tag" with the content
[0b,0b,0b,0b,0b,0b,0b]
. **Because of the limited size of the crafting table only 7 values can be put between Square brackets at a time. List Tags of any length can be created by concatenating two or more List Tags. **An empty pair of Square brackets produces an empty List with the content
[]
. **"Name" items cannot be used in a List. The resulting Compound and List Tags can be used as values in other Compound and List Tags, as deeply nested as you want. ==Usage== Tags appear to have no further functionality. They cannot be eaten or placed in the world, except in an item frame, as each other item can. However, Compound Tags with values like
{Enchantments:[{id:"minecraft:sharpness",lvl:127b}]}
will show the enchantment glint and actually act accordingly when used. This appears to work with many weapon and tool enchantments. In theory, an extremely lucky
replace_recipe_output
vote can change the crafting recipe for compound tags to output something else. When cheats are enabled you can test this with a command like
/vote rule minecraft:replace_recipe_output approve {key:"minecraft:compound_tag",value:"minecraft:netherite_sword"}
. However, as long as this vote is approved no other compound tag can be crafted. Use
/vote rule minecraft:replace_recipe_output repeal *
to undo all recipe replacements. In combination with the
midas_touch
vote tag items can be converted into gold ingots. These retain their NBT data. When the world is loaded in another version of the game tag items disappear, but gold ingots persist. ==Trivia== *This implies that a name tag is 128 bit. *Compound and list tags are special in so far that the value they show in their tooltip is not merely a property of the item, but their actual NBT data. This is also the reason why naming them is disabled as that would mess up the NBT data. *The snapshot also contains an unused texture for an End Tag. ==History== java foot ==Gallery== <gallery> Tag.png|Tag Bit.png|Bit Byte Tag.png|Byte Tag Double Tag.png|Double Tag End Tag.png|End Tag Float Tag.png|Float Tag Int Tag.png|Int Tag Left Curly.png|Left Curly Left Square.png|Left Sqaure List Tag.png|List Tag Long Tag.png|Long Tag Name (23w13a or b).png|Name Right Curly.png|Right Curly Right Square.png|Right Square Short Tag.png|Short Tag Sssyntax Error.png|Sssyntax Error String Tag.png|String Tag </gallery> == References == reflist items jokes pt:Tag (item)

Netherite Ingot
  Netherite ingots are items obtained from crafting netherite scraps and gold ingots together, as well as loot from bastion remnant loot chests. Trivia
- Heads are one of the few blocks that do not have their own textures and take their textures from other objects.
- All heads are the same size (even though Wither Skeletons have larger heads than the other represented mobs).
- In demo mode after the demo period has ended, breaking a Wither Skeleton skull will cause it to reappear as a normal skeleton skull.
- Although mob heads do not protect the player, they can be enchanted and will apply enchantment effects to the player when worn.
- Enchanted mob heads only have the purple "enchanted" texture over their inventory icon, and will appear to be unenchanted when worn or placed.
- Heads will not cause cacti to break when placed next to them.
- You can make your head appear to grow and shrink slightly by equipping and removing a copy of it.
