Large normal comparison

Comparison between large and normal. The red dot is the origin of the world. Both worlds have the same seed.

Information icon
This feature is exclusive to Java Edition.

Large Biomes is a world type that generates Overworld worlds at a higher scale than in normal worlds. It does not affect Nether biomes at all.[1]

Generation[]

Large Biomes Button

Prior to version 1.18, Large Biomes worlds were generated as Default worlds, but had 16 times as much area (multiplied by 4 along the X and Z axis), causing the biomes of the Overworld to be expansive. A Default and Large Biome world sharing the same seed were geographically the same, overall. Rivers were not larger than they were in a default world.

Because of the multi-noise parameters used to generate biomes as of 1.18, Large Biomes terrain is no longer geographically consistent with the Default generation using the same seed.

The player can use a map to gain a visual representation of the scale of the biomes in their world.

Large Biomes offer a play experience different from regular sized worlds. If a player starts in an undesirable area, such as a desert, it can be difficult to survive. The generation system also leads to rare biomes being far more difficult to come by, but with more valuable resources when they are eventually found.

Cooked mutton is a food item obtained from cooking raw mutton.

Obtaining
Mob loot
Sheep
Adult sheep drop 1–2 cooked mutton if killed while on fire. The maximum amount is increased by 1 per level of looting, for a maximum of 1-5 with Looting III.

Cooking
Cooked mutton can be obtained by cooking raw mutton in a furnace, smoker, or campfire.

Trading
bedrock, apprentice-level butcher villagers have a 25% chance to sell 4 cooked mutton for one emerald as part of their trades.

java, butcher villagers may give the players with the Hero of the Village effect cooked mutton.

Usage
Food
To eat cooked mutton, press and hold use while it is selected in the hotbar. Eating one restores 6 hunger and 9.6 saturation, the same as cooked salmon.

Wolves
Cooked mutton can be used to breed and heal tamed wolves, lead them around, and make baby tamed wolves grow up faster by 10% of the remaining time.

An egg is an item that can be used to craft food items, or thrown for a chance to spawn chicks on impact.

Obtaining
Mob loot
Tutorials/Egg farming
A chicken drops an egg item every 5–10 minutes. The theoretical average would be expected at 1 egg every 7.5 minutes, or 0.1333 eggs per minute.

A fox sometimes spawns holding an egg, which it always drops upon death. Alternatively, a player dropping a food item causes the fox to drop the egg.

Chest loot
egg

Usage
Crafting ingredient
crafting usage

Combat
Players are able to throw eggs and deal knockback to mobs (but not other playersJE Combat Tests), but no damage is dealt, similar to a snowball. Likewise, throwing eggs at neutral mobs provokes them. Eggs can also be fired from dispensers and are affected by gravity.

Spawning chickens
When thrown by a dispenser or by pressing the use button, an egg has a 1 (12.5%) chance of spawning a chick. If this occurs, there is a 1 (3.125%) chance of spawning three additional chicks (on average, 1 out of every 256 eggs spawns 4 chicks). In other words, whenever an egg is thrown, there is a 31 chance of spawning 1 chick and a 1 chance of spawning four chicks.

The expected value of the number of chicks an egg produces is 35 or 13.7%. This means that on average, a chick is spawned every 7.3 eggs, a stack of 16 eggs spawns 2.188 chicks, and a full inventory including the hotbar and off-hand (<code>37 * 16 = 592</code> eggs) is expected to spawn approximately 81 chicks.

* Eggs break mid-fall if hit by another projectile; the chance of spawning a chick is not affected.
* Throwing an egg at a nether portal breaks the egg when it hits the portal.
* A thrown egg faces toward the player in first-person view, while it appears rotated horizontally in third-person view. This is the case for all throwable items (ender pearls, eggs, snowballs, and all throwable potions).

Experimental Snapshot 1Removed large biomes.
21w39aAdded large biomes for custom worlds.
Pre-release 1Readded large biomes. Large Biomes terrain is no longer geographically consistent with the Default generation using the same seed.

Issues[]

Issues relating to "Large Biomes" are maintained on the bug tracker. Report issues there.

Gallery[]

Trivia[]

 • The scale of biomes can be altered through the firstOctave parameters in biome_source of Custom worlds. Decreasing each firstOctave by 2, roughly makes biomes have a similar size to Large Biomes. This affects the temperature, vegetation, continentalness, and erosion parameters. Conversely, increasing all 4 parameters by more than 2 creates a more rugged terrain.
 • The Legacy Console Edition added a biome scale slider in TU54 with a "large biome size" option. This differs from large biomes on Java Edition by a scale factor of 4x smaller biomes on Legacy Console. This is due to Legacy Console Edition's default generated worlds using small biomes with 4x smaller biomes compared to default worlds on Java and Bedrock, and "medium sized biomes" 2x smaller than Java/Bedrock.

See also[]

 • Amplified - Similar to large biomes, but world generation is instead expanded vertically.
