Revision as of 18:35, 3 May 2015

This article is about users' measurements of performance using Minecraft computer version 1.8 and newer on various hardware and software configurations. For the game requirements, see Hardware requirements. For the performance of the Pocket Edition, see Pocket Edition hardware performance. For the in-game bugs and issues of Minecraft computer edition, see the issue tracker|Issues/notice|the issue tracker.

Java Edition hardware performance/nav

Instructions

Software requirements

Latest graphics drivers

Minecraft launcher or newer.

  • Windows:
    • The launcher can be downloaded as a .msi installer here. Alternatively, you can download an .exe executable here.
  • OS X:
    • The launcher can be downloaded as a .dmg disk image here.
  • Linux and other OS variants:
    • The launcher can be downloaded as a .jar executable here.
  • While installing Java is not required to launch and play Minecraft on Windows and OS X, Java is required to open the .jar executable when using Linux or another OS variant.
  • The launcher will update itself upon opening if an update is available. (You may need to reopen your launcher for the update to take effect.)

Minecraft or newer.

  • You may also use the latest snapshot or pre-release when applicable.

Conditions for testing

Read before continuing forward!

Do not use third-party launchers. This includes, but is not limited to, Magic Launcher, MultiMC, etc.
Do not use mods. This includes, but is not limited to, OptiFine and FpsPlus, and Shaders mod.

  • (Optional) You may use OptiFine, FpsPlus or the Shaders mod after the initial test and make a note of your FPS in your comment section. Should you do so, mention what version of either of those mods you are using.
    • Example: OptiFine 1.8.1 HD U C6, or ShadersMod v2.4.7.

Follow the template in its entirety when creating your entry. The less we correct, the easier it is on us!

Recommended for best frame rate accuracy:

  • Close any unnecessary background applications (These may be using up CPU and/or GPU resources while you are benchmarking),
  • Set your laptop LCD screen, or monitor, to its native resolution,
    • Laptop users: Benchmark using the internal LCD screen.
    • Desktop users: Benchmark using your primary monitor only; do not span Minecraft across multiple monitors.
      • Users who compare against entries likely have one monitor. Benchmarks with Minecraft spanned across monitors will not show the same results as with a single monitor.

Doing these steps provides better results for owners of similar or same hardware to compare against.

To contribute to this list, you must use the following options/settings in both the Minecraft Launcher and in Minecraft itself.

Launcher Setup In-game Options
  • Choose New Profile, and use the settings provided below:

File:Profile info 1.8.png
Note: Enable "snapshots" if you wish to benchmark them.
Note: Leave "Executable" unchecked. Use only the Java runtime downloaded by the launcher.

  • FOV - Leave this at Normal
  • Video Settings - Use the settings provided below:

File:Hardware Performance Options.png
Note: Max Framerate: Unlimited and Use VSync: OFF allow for highest framerate possible.

  • Resource Packs - Select only the Default resource pack.
    • Do not use any other resource packs as this may incur performance variations.

Testing Method

  • Create New World
    • World Name: "Hardware Performance Test" (Without quotes)
    • Game Mode: Survival, Creative if you don't want hostile mobs to bother you (Please don't use commands or fly if you choose Creative).
    • More World Options
      • Seed for the World Generator: "Hardware Performance Test" (Without quotes)
      • Generate Structures: ON
      • World Type: Default
      • Allow Cheats: OFF
      • Bonus Chest: OFF
  • Once in the Test world...
    • Press F3 to display the debug screen.
    • Go to and stand at coordinates XYZ: 276.5xx / 82.00000 / 180.5xx. (Displayed on the seventh line from the top)
      • Looks in all directions to load all visible chunks until the chunk updates value drops to zero or a low, consistent value.
  • To gather FPS results:
    • Walk around in a small circle (about 10-15 blocks in all directions - counting from the center of a circle), while looking ahead.
      • Do Not look straight up or down while obtaining the frame rate. Looking both upwards and downwards causes objects that are out of view, mainly objects on the horizontal plane, not to be rendered which increases FPS. This skews the results.
    • Get the minimum and maximum frame rates for:
      • Default window size (854×480),
      • Maximized window (best fit to the primary monitor's native resolution),
      • Fullscreen (primary monitor only, not spanned over multiple monitors).
        • To change to fullscreen: Windows Users press F11, OS X users press FN + F11).
    • (Optional, but recommended:) Use Fraps benchmarking feature to collect frame rate results. (Using the debug screen lowers in-game FPS, therefore making results less accurate.)
    • Record the highest and lowest frame rate values, not an average frame rate. (An average of 35FPS won't tell a user that you really may have had 5-40FPS during your gameplay.)
    • Capture frame rate to the ones place for best accuracy (FPS results such as 200-100 are less accurate than 210-180 or 252-157.)
