Revision as of 01:41, 26 July 2014

This article is about users' measurements of performance using Minecraft computer version 1.7.2 and newer on various hardware and software configurations. For the game requirements, see Hardware requirements. For the performance of the Pocket Edition, see Pocket Edition hardware performance. For the in-game bugs and issues of Minecraft computer edition, see the issue tracker|Issues/notice|the issue tracker.

Java Edition hardware performance/nav

Instructions

Hardware requirements

Please see hardware requirements for more information.

Software requirements

  • Windows XP or later, OS X, GNU/Linux, and some Unix-like distributions such as FreeBSD.
    • Windows users: Run Windows Update to install the latest updates from Microsoft
    • OS X users: Run Software Update from System Preferences to install the latest updates from Apple.
    • GNU/Linux users: Use the respective Package manager for your distribution to install the latest updates.
      • Alternatively (for distributions to which it applies): Open a Terminal and type in the command "sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get upgrade".
  • Java SE 8
    • Using the most up-to-date version of Java 8 is preferred. (1.8 Update 5 as of April 15, 2014)
    • If you are using a 64-bit OS, it is highly recommended that you install the 64-bit version of Java. (Both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions are compatible with each other.)
      • The launcher will choose to use Java 64-bit over 32-bit when available.
  • Latest graphics drivers
  • Minecraft launcher 1.4.2 or newer
    • The new launcher updates itself automatically each start-up, if you have an available internet connection (You may need to open your launcher twice for the new versions to take effect.)
    • To update the launcher manually, download it here
  • Minecraft or newer. (Snapshots and pre-releases when applicable).
    • 1.7.4 resolves a bug that allows correct rendering beyond 8 chunks: "MC-31622". As such, please do not use 1.7.2 for benchmarking, thank you!
    • Older versions will need to be updated to current versions. Previous versions in entries will not be approved.

Conditions for testing

To contribute to this list, you must use the following options in both the Minecraft Launcher and in Minecraft itself.

Please note the following before continuing onward:

  • Use the downloadable client. Do not use Magic Launcher or any other launcher other than default Minecraft launcher.
  • NO MODS (especially OptiFine and FpsPlus)
    • If you want, you can install OptiFine/FpsPlus after the initial test and make a note of your FPS in your comment section. This is not required.

Launcher setup

  • Choose New Profile, and use the settings that are provided below:
    • Profile Info
      • Profile Name: "Hardware Performance Test"
      • Resolution: "854"×"480"
    • Version Selection
      • Enable experimental development versions ("snapshots"): Keep disabled unless you plan on benchmarking a snapshot
      • Use version: "release ", or the latest snapshot
    • Java Settings (Advanced)
      • Executable: Leave this alone
      • JVM Arguments: Do not enable this option or add any arguments

In-game setup

Options

Use the following settings as seen in the following screenshots:

  • Under Resource Packs, select the Default resource pack.
    • Do not use any other resource packs as this may incur performance variations.
  • With the exception of Max Framerate, Server Textures, and Use VSync, these settings are the default settings when Minecraft is first installed.
    • Performance set at Max FPS allows the game to do its best in delivering smooth gameplay, along with Use VSync: OFF allowing FPS to run as high as it can. Server Textures really has no effect when in a singleplayer world. This is essentially a small reminder to use default textures during the test.
Singleplayer
  • Create New World
    • World Name: "Hardware Performance Test" (Without quotes)
    • Game Mode: Survival, Creative if you don't want hostile mobs to bother you (Please don't use commands or fly if you choose Creative).
    • More World Options
      • Seed for the World Generator: "Hardware Performance Test" (Without quotes)
      • Generate Structures: ON
      • World Type: Default
      • Allow Cheats: OFF
      • Bonus Chest: OFF
  • Once in the Test world...
    • Press F3 to bring up the debug screen. Your FPS will be on the first line on the top left next to the game version.
    • (Optional, but recommended) For the most accurate frame rate results:
      • Allow all chunks to load until the chunk updates value drops to a low, consistent value (This may take a while depending on the performance of your machine.)
      • Use Fraps benchmarking feature to collect FPS results. (Using the debug screen lowers in-game FPS, therefore making results less accurate.)
  • To gather FPS results:
    • Stand at coordinates (x:276), (z:180).
      • (Coordinates can be found on the mid-left position on the debug screen.)
      • This is a central location for players to start. Players retrieving frame rates closer to the lake will have higher FPS results as opposed to those who are by or inside the tree line, creating unfair results.
    • Look around in all horizontal directions. Do not look straight up or down while obtaining the framerate.
      • Looking down causes any underground entities to hurt your average FPS while looking up inflates it, ruining a standard test either way.
    • When retrieving your average frame rate, walk around in a small circle (about 20 blocks in all directions - counting from the center of a circle).
    • Get the minimum and maximum framerates for the default window size (854×480), maximized to fill screen (your native screen resolution), and in fullscreen. To change to fullscreen, press F11 (Mac OS X FN + F11).
