Glass bottles can be obtained by crafting, drinking potions, or from witch drops.
Drinking a potion will return the empty glass bottle. Throwing a splash potion or a lingering potion will not return a glass bottle, but brewing a lingering potion will give a glass bottle back.
Witches have a chance of dropping 0–6 glass bottles upon death.
A bottle may be filled by holding it in your hand and using on a water source block or a filled cauldron. If filled via a water source, the water will be unaffected. If filled via a cauldron, 1/3 of the water (or potion[Pocket edition only]) in the cauldron will be removed. Therefore, using a cauldron to fill bottles is inefficient, except in the Nether where it is normally the only way to fill bottles.
