The Ender Dragon is a boss mob that appears in The End, and is the first boss mob to be added to Minecraft.

Spawning

Initial spawning

A single ender dragon spawns naturally in the End, immediately as the first player enters the dimension. It will spawn on any difficulty, including Peaceful, but will be unable to harm a player in Peaceful mode.

Respawning

Players can re-spawn the ender dragon once the fight is completed, by placing four ender crystals atop the exit portal, one on each side.

Commands

The /summon EnderDragon command, by default, summons a harmless ender dragon that hovers in place. Setting the DragonPhase tag, for instance by issuing /summon EnderDragon ~ ~ ~ {DragonPhase:0}, will create a normal ender dragon, though with no health bar since the bar is managed by the End's dragon fight status rather than by the dragon entity itself.

Drops

Once defeated, the Ender dragon will appear to have beams of light spontaneously erupting from its body. It will then explode, dropping enough experience to bring a player from no experience to level 78 (12000 - 10 drops of 1000 experience, one drop of 2000 experience). Subsequent ender dragons (ones re-spawned via the Ender crystals) only drop 500 experience.

It will also activate the exit portal, and drop a dragon egg onto the top. This portal is found at X=0 and Z=0, at the Y-coordinate of the surface of the island. The dragon egg is only dropped by the first dragon, and never by subsequent dragons.

Behavior

DragonBreathAttack

The dragon "bathing" Endermen with its acid breath attack.

The dragon has four main states of behavior:

  • Circling - the dragon begins in this state. When circling, the dragon will circle outside the ring of pillars if Ender crystals remain, or inside the ring of pillars if not. With increasing chances as crystals are destroyed it will land on the empty portal or strafe a player within 64 blocks of the portal.
  • Strafing - the dragon will fly towards the target player. When it is within 64 blocks, it will fire Ender charges and resume circling.
  • Charging - the dragon will fly rapidly towards the target player's position at the start of the charge, then resume circling whether or not the player was actually hit.
  • Perching - the dragon flies towards the empty portal (approaching from the side opposite the player, if possible) and lands on the highest block of (X:0,Z:0). The dragon is immune to arrows in this state; if the player attempts hit the dragon with arrows, the dragon will immediately charge at the player. After 1.25 seconds, if a player is within 20 blocks of the portal, the dragon will roar and use its breath attack for 3 seconds, which damages players similarly to a lingering Potion of Harming. If no player is near enough to the portal within 5 seconds, the dragon will charge at a player within 150 blocks. After four consecutive breath attacks, or if it does not find a player within 150 blocks, the dragon will take off and begin circling again. When cumulative damage while landed exceeds 50♥ × 25, it will take off to start circling, and reset the damage accumulator. The accumulator is not reset if the dragon does not take enough damage.

The purple clouds emitted from the Ender dragon's breath attack can be collected in an empty bottle to obtain Dragon's Breath.

Whenever the dragon finds itself less than 10 blocks or greater than 150 blocks to its current target, it will attempt to choose a new target. When damaged it will target a point just behind itself, causing it to turn away and choose a new target.

The dragon is not hostile towards any other entities except the player. However, other mobs may turn hostile to the Ender dragon if struck. Any entities hit by the dragon's wings will be dealt 5♥♥♥ damage (10♥♥♥♥♥ damage when hit by its head) and thrown into the air, sometimes to fatal heights or even off the island. Neither of these effects is applied for 12 second after the dragon takes damage.

If it takes fatal damage, the Ender dragon will fly to within 10 blocks of the portal before actually dying, unless it is over 150 blocks away or inside blocks. When the dragon is respawned, a series of explosions resets the obsidian pillars, iron bars, and Ender crystals.

The ender dragon has a light purple health bar that appears at the top of the player's screen. Its health is periodically healed by nearby ender crystals, indicated by a white beam connecting the dragon and the crystal. Destroying an ender crystal while the ender dragon is being healed by it will cause the ender dragon to take 10♥♥♥♥♥ damage. The ender dragon can only take damage from explosions and player based damage. The ender dragon takes 14 normal damage when hit in any part that is not its head. The dragon does not take damage from snowballs, eggs, or other attacks that normally deal no damage. Suffocation is ineffective, as the ender dragon will destroy almost any block it comes into contact with and doesn't get damage from blocks that the dragon cannot destroy. There are several exceptions, which the dragon simply passes through:

Ender charge

File:Ender Acid Fire Charge.png

Ender charge

The ender dragon will periodically fire ender charges while strafing. Ender charges are special fireballs that emit purple clouds similar to a lingering Potion of Harming II. Like the dragon's close-ranged breath attack, these clouds too can be collected in a bottle to obtain Dragon's Breath. In Console Edition, charges come from the sky rather than the dragon itself.

History

beta
June 18, 2011Originally, dragons were a possible planned mob, hinted at by Notch during the Spider Jockey update.
He also mentioned that dragon lairs may be an addition "in the video description of this video" They remained a potential work-in-progress until the Ender Dragon was announced.
June 18, 2011Notch has stated in the past that if dragons are added, they will not be mountable as it would put too much pressure on SMP servers.
September 1, 2011Notch stated that "dragons will be added eventually."
October 7, 2011Notch revealed the existence of the Ender Dragon.
October 10, 2011Notch released a video showing a small clip of the End that also shows the Ender Dragon fly into the top of the frame. "Brightened version here"
October 12, 2011In a Reddit post Notch also said, "They will be different dragons. The Ender Dragon will probably become larger, and the ones in the main world will be this size, won't go through terrain, and will be red because dragons are red."[1]
Notch stated in a twitter post that "Dragons have 6 limbs", consisting of 2 wings, and 4 legs.[2]

'''Netherite ingots''' are items obtained from crafting [[netherite scrap]]s and [[gold ingot]]s together, as well as loot from [[bastion remnant]] loot chests. Unlike other items, they are immune to fire and [[lava]] damage. They are primarily used to upgrade [[diamond]] gear and craft [[lodestone]]s.

== Obtaining ==

Netherite ingots are obtained by crafting four [[netherite scrap]]s and four [[gold ingot]]s. It is a shapeless recipe, therefore the placement of the netherite scraps and gold ingots does not matter when crafting it.

* {{TrimPalette|netherite ingot}}
* {{TrimPalette|netherite ingot|darker=1}} (a darker color palette is used when a netherite armor piece is trimmed using a netherite ingot).

=== Repairing ===

Netherite ingots are the repair items for the netherite [[tier]] and [[armor material]], and thus can be used to [[item repair|repair]] the following items in an [[anvil]]:
* {{ItemLink|Netherite Helmet}}
* {{ItemLink|Netherite Chestplate}}

=== Beacons ===

A netherite ingot could be used to select powers from a [[beacon]] instead of using an [[emerald]], [[gold ingot]], [[iron ingot]], or a [[diamond]]. The player must select one of the available powers, and then insert an ingot in the item slot. The [[gold]] option is more efficient than the netherite option because it consumes 3 fewer gold and no [[Netherite Scrap|netherite scrap]].

Beta 1.9-pre4The name "ender dragon" was first made known through a tweet by Notch reading "raqreqentba", which could be decoded using the ROT13 cypher, translating to "enderdragon".[3]
Added Ender Dragon. The Ender Dragon existed in the code, mostly functional, however the dragon had not been enabled ingame yet and players were unable to damage it. Certain mods would allow the spawning of the Ender Dragon, but again, no physical interactions were available.
Beta 1.9-pre5Added the ability for players to damage Ender Dragons. They required mods or a mob-spawner to be brought into the game however. The ender dragon's health was changed to 1♥ to test its new death animation.
Beta 1.9-pre6Officially implemented Ender Dragons into the game. This includes a single Ender Dragon as a boss battle, spawning naturally when the player first enters the End.
April 28, 2012Jeb mentioned that he wouldn't be adding any more boss mobs until he makes the Ender Dragon "more fun first". Despite this, the Wither was added before any major changes were made to the Ender Dragon.

Written books can be opened by right-clicking (or holding down on the screen {{in|bedrock}}), and display a GUI allowing the [[player]] to read it or turn the page.

The contents of a book are an extra set of data attached to the item. This means that when a book is destroyed, its contents are lost with it.

=== Lecterns ===

One can place a [[written book]] on an empty [[lectern]].

The lectern then emits a redstone signal depending on the displayed page in the book. On the last page, the lectern emits a signal strength of 15.

=== Chiseled bookshelf ===
{{control|Use|text=Using}} the [[chiseled bookshelf]] while having a written book in the main hand will put the book inside the chiseled bookshelf.

A '''beetroot''' is a food and [[dye]] ingredient.

== Obtaining ==

=== Farming ===
Beetroots are obtained from harvesting a fully grown [[beetroots|crop block]], which drops 1 beetroot and 1-4 seeds ({{frac|2|5|7}} seeds per plant harvested on average). Seed yield can be increased using a tool enchanted with [[Fortune]], with Fortune III harvesting an average of {{frac|5|3|7}} seeds per plant.

These crops can be found growing in [[village]]s or can be grown from planted [[beetroot seeds]].<!-- Do not add locations for finding seeds. Where to find seeds is described in the article about the seeds. -->

== Usage ==

=== Food ===
A beetroot can be eaten to restore {{hunger|1}} [[hunger]] and 1.2 hunger [[Hunger#Mechanics|saturation]]. Six beetroots can be crafted into [[beetroot soup]], which restores six times the hunger and saturation of a single beetroot.

=== Crafting ingredient ===
{{crafting usage}}

=== Breeding ===
Beetroots can be used to [[breeding|breed]] [[pig]]s. Pigs also follow a player who is holding beetroot.

[[Villager]]s can pick up beetroot items to become willing, allowing them to breed. Villagers need 12 beetroots before they can breed.

=== Composting ===
Placing beetroot into a [[composter]] has a 65% chance of raising the compost level by 1.

=== Trading ===

Novice-level Farmer villagers have a 25%{{only|bedrock}} or 40%{{only|java}} chance to buy 15 beetroots for an emerald.

{{Item
| image = Name Tag.png

| stackable = Yes (64)
}}
A '''name tag''' is an [[item]] used to name [[mob]]s in the world and prevent them from despawning naturally.

== Obtaining ==

=== Chest loot ===

{{LootChestItem|name-tag}}

=== Fishing ===

Name tags can be caught from [[fishing]] as part of the treasure category with a {{frac|1|6}} chance after the 5% chance of being a treasure catch. The chance of catching treasure increases with the [[Luck of the Sea]] enchantment.

=== Trading ===

Master-level librarian [[villagers]] offer to sell a name tag for 20 [[emerald]]s as one of their available trades.

== Usage ==

To use a name tag, it must first be renamed with an [[anvil]], costing 1 [[experience]] level.

If it is not renamed, it has no effect when used on a mob. After the name tag is renamed, the player can {{control|use}} it on a mob to give it the name given to the name tag from the anvil. Mobs and name tags can be renamed any number of times. Name tags with the same name are stackable.

Once a mob is named, it keeps its name, and the name tag is consumed.

When a mob is named, it is excluded from the mob cap count.

Effects on various mobs:
* A named [[silverfish]] that goes into a block appears to lose its name because it is replaced by a newly generated unnamed silverfish when the block is broken.
* A baby (animal or villager) keeps its name when becoming an adult.
** A named [[villager]] keeps its name when transformed into a [[Zombie Villager|zombie villager]].
** A named zombie villager keeps its name when cured.
* [[Wandering Trader|Wandering trader]]s still despawn even if they are named, or in a [[minecart]] or [[boat]].
* A named [[wither]]'s boss bar displays its name instead of "Wither".
* Naming an [[ender dragon]] with commands also displays the name in the boss bar.

=== Limitations ===

Any mob can be named except for the [[ender dragon]] and [[player]]s.

A name tag can rename an [[armor stand]], though it does not show the nameplate above its head until <code>CustomNameVisible:1b</code> is set as an extra step.

{{control|Using|use}} a name tag on a villager renames the villager instead of opening the trading interface. A saddled pig is renamed instead of being ridden. Using a name tag on any other mob that can be interacted with performs the {{control|use}} action instead of being named. These mobs can be renamed if the player uses the name tag while crouching or standing in a [[nether portal]] because the portal suppresses the {{control|use}} action.

Once a name tag is used on a mob, it is impossible to remove the name of that mob without the use of commands or external modifications.

=== Behavior ===

Renamed mobs have their name displayed over their head in the same fashion as a mob named through a renamed [[spawn egg]]. Their names can be seen only if they are aimed at from four or fewer blocks away.

Mobs that are named using the name tag never despawn in the world, similar to tamed mobs.<ref>{{tweet|dinnerbone|327485109940916226}}</ref> The exceptions are [[wandering trader]]s or if the mob is hostile and the difficulty is switched to "[[Peaceful]]", causing any hostile mobs or any named hostile mobs to despawn immediately.

If a renamed mob kills a player, the custom name is used in the death message in place of the mob type name. For instance, if a vindicator named "Johnny" kills a player, the death message is "Player was slain by Johnny".

A renamed [[wither]] also has a renamed health bar, and the boss bar doesn't regenerate{{verify}}.

=== Easter eggs ===

* Any mob that receives the name "[[Easter eggs#Upside-down mobs|Dinnerbone]]" or "[[Easter eggs#Upside-down mobs|Grumm]]" is rendered upside down. This even includes the player in early versions of Bedrock Edition if the username is set to either of these and you are not signed into Xbox Live.
* Naming a [[sheep]] "[[Easter eggs#Jeb sheep|jeb_]]" causes its wool to fade between the dye colors, producing a rainbow effect. The [[wool]] that drops when the sheep is [[shear]]ed or killed is the original color of the sheep before the sheep was named.
* Naming a [[rabbit]] "[[Rabbit#Toast|Toast]]" causes it to have a special memorial skin of user xyzen420's girlfriend's [http://www.reddit.com/r/minecraftsuggestions/comments/27hjog/to_themogminer_my_bunny_is_missing_please_help_me/ missing rabbit].
* Naming a [[vindicator]] "Johnny" causes it to be aggressive and attack all [[mob]]s including the wither (except [[ghast]]s and other [[illager]]s). The hostility even extends to [[Ravager|ravagers]] in [[Java Edition|''Java Edition'']], as the "Johnny" vindicator can also attack the ravager while it's riding it.

A '''nautilus shell''' is an item that is used for crafting [[conduit]]s.

==Obtaining==
===Fishing===
{{main|Fishing#Junk and treasure}}
Nautilus shells can be rarely obtained as a treasure item from fishing. The drop chances of nautilus shells slightly increase with each level of [[Luck of the Sea]] on the [[player]]'s [[fishing rod]].

===Mob loot===
[[Drowned]] have a 3%{{only|java|short=1}} or 8%{{only|bedrock|short=1}} chance to spawn with a nautilus shell in their off-hand, and this nautilus shell always drops upon [[death]].

===Trading===
[[Wandering trader]]s may [[trading|sell]] a nautilus shell for 5 [[emerald]]s each, but they only sell 5 of them at a time.

==Usage==
{{IN|bedrock}}, a nautilus shell is one of the few items that can be held in the off-hand.

===Crafting ingredient===
{{crafting usage}}

=== Trading ===
Nautilus shells can be given to trident-wielding drowned with a chance for the drowned to pick up the shell and drop the trident.[''[[Bedrock Edition]] only'']

==Trivia==
*[[wikipedia:Nautilus|Nautilus]]es are animals that occupy deep oceans in the real world. However, they are absent in Minecraft and there are currently no plans to add nautilus [[mob]]s into the game.
*Because {{el|bedrock}} allows for Nautilus shells to be held in the off-hand (since drowned hold them), they are the only item in that version that can be put in the off-hand slot without having a specific function.

An '''item frame''' is an [[entity]]{{only|java|short=y}} or [[block entity]]{{only|bedrock|short=y}} that displays the item or block that is inside it.

A '''glow item frame''' keeps itself and the item inside it illuminated, even in the dark.

== Obtaining ==

=== Breaking ===

{{IN|je}}, an empty item frame can be broken simply by punching it. If the item frame contains an item, punching it drops the item, leaving the frame on the wall.

Because item frames are [[entities]] {{in|java}}, they can be broken in [[Adventure]] mode. They will also be targeted by commands using the @e selector.{{only|java}}

=== Trading ===
Expert-level [[Trading#Cartographer|cartographer]] [[villager]]s have a chance to sell an item frame for 7 [[emerald]]s.

== Usage ==

=== Item display ===

[[File:Item Frame (map filled partial).png|thumb|150px|Item frame with partially filled map]]
Item frames can be placed on the sides of [[cactus]] blocks, [[pressure plate]]s, [[fence]]s, [[tree]]s, [[slab]]s, [[cobblestone wall]]s, [[chest]]s, [[door]]s, and all [[solid block]]s. They can also be placed on the top and bottom of these blocks. To place on chests and doors, the player needs to be [[sneaking]]. As item frames are an entity, multiple item frames can occupy the same block, although on different faces. It also allows non-solid blocks to occupy the same space.{{only|java}}

Players can place items in the frame by {{control|using}} the item. If a [[map]] is placed in an item frame, it enlarges to show the map in the size of a full block, with the item frame's location displayed as a green pointer on the map, pointing in the direction the item frame is facing. If this is done in the Nether, the green cursor spins around similar to the white cursor (players). If an item in an item frame has been renamed using an [[anvil]], it displays its custom name when the cursor is over the item frame. If the player places a block inside the frame, it is displayed in miniature half in, half out of the block. This can be most notably seen on stairs or slabs.

{{control|Pick block}} may be used on item frames by players in creative mode only, the control has no effect for players in Survival or Adventure mode. When the item frame is displaying an item, {{control|pick block}} picks the displayed item instead of the item frame.

Item frames can be placed on the lid of a [[shulker box]] that is positioned horizontally, but pop off when the lid is opened.{{only|java}}

=== Rotation ===
The displayed item can then be rotated by right-clicking the frame. Items displayed in the item frame can turn 45° diagonally, with a total of 8 possibilities (90° and 4 possibilities if it is a map), and the frame outputs a [[Mechanics/Redstone/Circuit#Power level|redstone signal]] depending on the rotation phase that can be interpreted by a [[redstone comparator]] (note that this rotation value is separate from the clock or compass rotation). As long as the frame remains placed, it remembers the orientation of the last item it held, and uses it for the next item it holds.{{only|java}}

=== Glow item frames ===
[[File:Item Frames Comparison.png|thumb|260px|Comparison between ordinary item frame and glow item frame in the dark.]]

When an item is placed inside a glow item frame, it appears to glow, even though it does not emit any [[light level]].

== Sounds ==
Item frames and glow item frames share the same sounds.

== Trivia==

*The item frame is based upon a suggestion on [[wikipedia:Reddit|Reddit]], like the [[ender chest]] and [[flower pot]].<ref>{{Tweet|dinnerbone|235747041286975488}}</ref>
*The item frame is the only entity to reference a block [[model]].{{only|java|short=1}} Because of this, the texture of the frame border is the same as the birch planks texture.
*Item frame is the '''only''' placeable item that can interfere with other non-full block entities.
*Due to the way layer textures are displayed in Minecraft, maps float on item frames, similar to how icons float on the map itself.

==== Anvil ====
Boots can be repaired in an [[Anvil mechanics#Unit repair|anvil]] by adding units of the [[armor material]]'s repair material, with each repair material restoring 25% of the boots' maximum durability, rounded down. Chainmail boots may also be repaired in this way using iron ingots.

They can also be [[Anvil mechanics#Combining items|combined]] with other boots. When doing this, the item's enchantments are not lost, and can even be raised.

==== Crafting ====
You can craft two sets of boots together using a crafting table, but enchantments are removed.

=== Mob loot ===

If a [[zombie]], [[husk]], [[stray]], [[piglin]], or [[skeleton]] is wearing armor, there is a 8.5% chance (9.5% with Looting I, 10.5% with Looting II and 11.5% with Looting III) for the mob to drop boots upon death. The boots are usually badly damaged, and may be enchanted.
[[File:Zombie With Boots.png|alt=Zombie is shown wearing boots|thumb|Zombie is shown wearing full iron armor set, including boots.]]

{{IN|bedrock}}, [[vindicator]]s and [[pillager]]s that spawn in [[raid]]s have a chance to drop iron boots, which are usually badly damaged and have a 50% chance to be enchanted.

=== Bartering ===
[[Piglin]]s may [[bartering|barter]] iron boots with [[Soul Speed]] when given a [[gold ingot]].

=== Fishing ===

Leather boots can be caught as a "junk" item when [[fishing]].

== Usage ==

Boots can be placed in the fourth armor slot of a player's [[inventory]] for activation.

=== Defense points ===

Defense points are each signified by half of a chestplate in the armor bar above the health bar. Each defense point reduces any damage dealt to the player that is absorbed by armor by 4%, increasing additively with the number of defense points. Different materials and combinations of armor provide different levels of defense.

The following table shows the amount of defense points added by boots.

=== Knockback resistance ===
Netherite boots provide 10% knockback resistance.

=== Durability ===

The following table shows the amount of damage each piece of armor can absorb before being destroyed.

Any "hit" from a damage source that can be blocked by armor removes one point of durability from each piece of armor worn for every {{hp|4}} of incoming damage (rounded down, but never below 1). Damage taken that armor doesn't protect (such as [[Damage#Fall damage|falling]] or [[Damage#Drowning|drowning]]) does not damage the armor, even if it is enchanted to protect against that type of damage. The following chart displays how many hits boots can endure.

Netherite armor is not damaged by [[lava]] or [[fire]] when worn.

=== Enchantments ===
Boots can receive the following [[enchantment]]s:

=== Smelting usage ===

{{Smelting|showname=1|Iron Boots;Chainmail Boots;Golden Boots|Iron Nugget;Iron Nugget;Gold Nugget|0,1}}
=== Piglins ===
{{EntityLink|Piglin|Piglins}} are attracted to ''golden'' boots and pick them up, examining them for 6 to 8 seconds. Other boots do not attract piglins but can be worn by them. They prefer stronger boots over weaker boots, with one major exception: They always prefer golden boots over all other boots, throwing out stronger boots to equip them. Enchanted boots are preferred over unenchanted boots.

=== Powder snow===

Leather boots can be used to safely cross [[powder snow]] without sinking in it. The block behaves similar to [[scaffolding]], allowing the player to sink in by pressing {{control|crouch}} and move up by pressing {{control|jump}}. The boots also prevent the wearer from taking freezing damage.

===Decoration===
It is possible to upgrade armor with trims. This requires a [[Smithing Template#Gallery|Smithing Template]], an armor piece, and an ingot or crystal ({{ItemSprite|iron-ingot}}iron ingot/{{ItemSprite|copper-ingot}}copper ingot/{{ItemSprite|gold-ingot}}gold ingot/{{ItemSprite|netherite-ingot}}netherite ingot/{{ItemSprite|emerald}}emerald/{{ItemSprite|redstone-dust}}redstone dust/{{ItemSprite|lapis-lazuli}}lapis lazuli/{{ItemSprite|amethyst-shard}}amethyst shard/{{ItemSprite|nether-quartz}}nether quartz/{{ItemSprite|diamond}}diamond).

These trims have no effect on the gameplay or strength of the armor.

*Netherite boots are shorter in their item texture but are longer in their texture when being worn
*Leather armor originally used textures from one of [[Notch]]'s previous games, ''[[Legend of the Chambered]]''.
*Leather boots are the only piece of leather armor that has the same name as other armor materials.
*The netherite boots are the only type of boots to have a differently shaped item sprite when compared to the other boot types.
*Chainmail boots are the only boots that have transparent pixels in their texture currently

An '''amethyst shard''' is a crystal ore obtained from mining a fully grown [[amethyst cluster]] or can be obtained from chests in [[Ancient City|ancient cities]].

== Obtaining ==

=== Mining ===
An [[amethyst cluster]] mined using a non-[[Silk Touch]], non-[[Fortune]] [[pickaxe]] drops 4 amethyst shards. When mined using any other tool, [[item]] or mechanism (such as [[explosion]]s or [[piston]]s) it drops 2 shards. The maximum amount of amethyst shards dropped can be increased with Fortune. Fortune I gives a {{frac|1|3}} chance for eight shards, averaging 5.33 shards; Fortune II gives a 25% chance (each) to give eight or 12 shards, averaging 7 shards, and Fortune III gives a 20% chance (each) to give 8, 12, or 16 shards, averaging 8.8 shards.

If the amethyst cluster in any of its growth stages is mined using a pickaxe enchanted with [[Silk Touch]], it drops itself rather than amethyst shards.

=== Allay duplication ===
If an amethyst shard is given to an [[allay]] that is currently dancing to an active [[jukebox]], the allay emits heart particles, consumes the amethyst shard and duplicates into another allay. After this, there is a 5 minute cool down until both allays can be duplicated like this again.

A '''sign''' is a non-solid [[block]] that displays text and can be placed on the top or side of other blocks. A '''hanging sign''' is a decorative block that also displays text, and can be placed underneath blocks or with a solid self-supporting bracket. The text of both types of signs can be customized with [[dye]]s and [[glow ink sac]]s.

== Obtaining ==
=== Breaking ===
Signs can be broken with any tool or without a tool, but an [[axe]] is fastest.
{{breaking row|horizontal=1|Sign|sprite=oak-sign|Axe|foot=1|item=1}}

A sign or a hanging sign also breaks and drops itself as an [[item]] if the block the sign is attached to is moved, removed or destroyed. However, a wall hanging sign will stay here if the block the hanging sign is attached to is removed.<ref>{{bug|MC-256501|||WAI}}</ref>

If a sign is broken while being edited, the player continues to edit the sign<ref>{{bug|MC-117815}}</ref>, although {{in|bedrock}} breaking the sign stops the editing operation.

=== Natural generation ===
An oak sign can be found in [[igloo]] basements. Spruce signs can be found in taiga [[village]] houses, as part of a chair.

=== Chest loot ===
{{LootChestItem|oak-sign,oak-hanging-sign,spruce-sign,spruce-hanging-sign}}

=== Crafting ===
[[The player]] can place six stripped [[log]] [[block]]s at the bottom half of the crafting table and place two [[chain]]s on the top-left and top-right slots to create hanging signs. This crafting recipe will create six hanging signs. Hanging signs can only be crafted with stripped logs or [[stem]]s; non-stripped wood cannot be used to craft hanging signs.

== Usage ==
Signs can be used to display text; they can be used to label storage, display information to other players or note areas of interest. Signs are also not destroyed by [[water]] or [[lava]] and therefore may be used to control the flow of these fluids.

=== Placement ===
==== Signs ====
Signs may be placed on the top or side of other [[block]]s (including semi-solid and non-solid blocks such as [[fence]]s, [[Trapdoor|trapdoors]] and other signs). To place a sign, {{control|use}} a sign [[item]] while pointing at the block the sign should be attached to, enter the desired text (or none), and click the "Done" button or press "escape" on a keyboard (or press × {{in|bedrock}}, {{xbtn|b}} on an Xbox controller, {{psbtn|o}} on a PlayStation controller, or {{nsbutton|B}} on a Nintendo Switch controller. Closing the virtual keyboard on a mobile device also exits the typing menu). To place a sign on a block that can be interacted with by the {{control|use}} control (for example, [[chest]]s, [[note block]]s, etc.), {{control|sneak}} while placing the sign.

Signs on the top of a block stand on a short post and face toward the player who placed it, in any of 16 different directions. Signs placed on the side of a block simply float there, even if the block doesn't make contact with the sign.

Even if placed on a vertical surface, a sign may not co-exist in the same block of air as any other item, despite not necessarily visibly obstructing eachother.

For more information about the blocks signs can be placed on, see [[Opacity/Placement]].

==== Hanging signs ====
Hanging signs can be placed in three different ways:
* Placing a hanging sign on the side of a block will result in it being placed with a self-supporting bracket, which allows it to float without any supporting block. This version can be placed in four different directions.
* Placing a hanging sign on the bottom of a block will result in the sign hanging below the block.
** If the block is wide enough, the chains holding the sign will be parallel. This version can be placed in four different directions.
** If the block is too narrow, the chains will meet together in a upwards arrow shape. This version is also placed if the player is {{control|sneaking}} when placing a hanging sign below a wide-enough block. This version can be placed in sixteen different directions.

=== Text ===
[[File:Oak Sign GUI.png|thumb|240px|Oak Sign editing.]]
Placing a sign opens an editor interface resembling a magnified view of the sign. Up to four lines of text can then be entered using a keyboard (hardware or on-screen). The editor supports limited editing, including moving the cursor and inserting and deleting characters. {{IN|bedrock}}, [[formatting codes]] can also be used to apply decorative effects such as color, bold, italic and underline to various bits of the text. Depending on the edition and platform in use, copy and paste operations may be supported and the editor may also support keyboard entry of Alt-codes for displaying Unicode characters.

Text can be added to the back side of a sign by interacting with the that side of the sign after placing it and editing the front.

Signs can be waxed by {{Control|use|text=using}} a [[honeycomb]] on it. Once waxed, a sign cannot be unwaxed or edited.

After placing and affixing text on a sign, a player can change the text color by {{control|using}} a [[dye]] on it. When colored with dye, the text color may differ from any color specified by formatting codes.{{Info needed|How does this work? Does the dye affect all the text? One line? One word? Does dye override all formatting codes, including font effects?}}

[[File:Glow Ink Sign with Orange Dye JE2.png|thumb|216px|Oak sign with glow ink and orange dye applied in {{JE}}.]]

A player can {{control|use}} a [[glow ink sac]] on a sign to make its text glow. The glowing text is not affected by lighting. The player can use a regular black [[ink sac]] on the sign to remove the glowing effect.

In [[Creative]] mode, the combination {{key|Ctrl}} + {{control|pick block}} on Windows/Linux, or {{key|cmd}} + {{control|pick block}} on macOS, can be used to copy an already-placed sign, including its text (with decorations), into the player's inventory.

A dyed sign facing east or west will have its text appear more saturated and bright than a sign facing north or south. However, it is actually the sign that is dimmer, because ''Minecraft'''s lighting engine uses side lighting to make the world appear less flat, but the text on signs is not affected by this.

{{IN|bedrock}}, inappropriate words or phrases in a sign's text are displayed as asterisks.

{{IN|java}}, signs can be created with [[Commands#Raw JSON Text|JSON text]], which allows complex formatting (colors, bold, italic, etc.), hover and click events, localized translation (for ''Minecraft'' technical terms, like "Redstone Repeater", otherwise translations must be provided in language files in resource packs), and the incorporation of scoreboard values into text. Use the {{cmd|data merge block}} command to create or alter JSON signs.

: Example: {{cmd|long=1|data merge block ~ ~1 ~ <nowiki>{front_text:{ color:"green", messages:[ '{"selector":"@p", "bold":false, "italic":false, "underlined":false, "strikethrough":false, "obfuscated":false}' , '{"text":"Second Line"}']}}}}

Signs can post the success count of JSON text hover and click events to [[scoreboard]] objectives. The objectives to be used can be specified by running the {{cmd|execute store}} command or by modifying the sign's NBT data directly with the {{cmd|data merge block}} command.

=== Interaction ===
Signs act as though they have a {{control|use}} action, so the [[player]] is unable to place [[block]]s or use [[item]]s while the cursor is pointed at them without {{control|sneaking}}.

Signs are destroyed and drop as an item when pushed by a [[piston]].{{Only|bedrock}}

Signs are non-solid and have no collision, so [[item]]s and [[mob]]s can move through sign blocks. Other [[block]]s (including other signs) can be placed on any edge of a sign.

[[Water]] and [[lava]] flow around signs. Lava can create [[fire]] in [[air]] blocks next to signs as if the signs were flammable, but the signs do not burn (and cannot be burned by other methods either, except {{in|be}}).

=== Fuel ===
Wooden signs can be used as a fuel in [[furnace]]s, smelting an [[item]] per sign.

=== Note Blocks ===
Signs can be placed under [[note block]]s to produce a "bass" sounds.

'''Glowstone dust''' is an [[item]] obtained from mining [[glowstone]], and is mainly used to create [[potion]]s with increased strength and decreased duration.

== Obtaining ==
=== Mining ===
When broken using anything other than a [[Silk Touch]]-enchanted [[tool]], a [[glowstone]] block drops 2-4 glowstone dust. A [[Fortune]] enchantment increases the chances of higher drops, with Fortune III allowing an average yield of 3.5 glowstone dust per block.

=== Mob loot ===
[[Witch]]es have a chance of dropping 0–6 glowstone dust upon death. This is increased by 3 per level of [[Looting]], for a maximum of 0-15 glowstone dust. <!-- Do not add the blaze as it is in violation of MCW:UPTODATE due to the Legacy Console Edition being discontinued. Any edit that adds the blaze to this section will be immediately reverted. -->

=== Trading ===

{{IN|bedrock}}, journeyman-level cleric [[villager]]s sell one glowstone dust for 4 [[emerald]]s as part of their trades.

'''Chains''' are metallic decoration [[block]]s.

== Obtaining ==
=== Breaking ===

Chains can be mined using any [[pickaxe]]. If mined without a pickaxe, it drops nothing.
{{breaking row|Chain|Pickaxe|Wood|horizontal=1}}

=== Natural generation ===
Chains generate in [[bastion remnant]]s and sometimes in [[ruined portal]]s that generate in the Nether. They always generate above [[magma cube]] spawners, also found in [[bastion]]s.

Chains can also generate in [[mineshafts]]. They generate on the sides of a wooden bridge (a mid-air corridor) when the distance between the bridge and the highest solid block below it is higher than the distance to the lowest solid block above it. Chains here generate vertically in a pillar between the bridge and the ceiling. The lowest block of the pillar, connecting the chain to the bridge, is always an [[oak fence]].

== Usage ==
Chains can be used to suspend [[bell]]s, [[hanging sign]]s, or both types of [[lantern]]s (normal lanterns and soul lanterns), as the chain texture connects to the chain of the lantern seamlessly as if it were part of it, and it connects the hanging sign chains together. Chains do not require a supporting block to be placed whether it is on the top, next to it or at the bottom. It can exist completely free-standing in mid air<ref>{{bug|MC-178791}}</ref> and it can be rotated. Chains connect horizontally or vertically, but not across different orientations (so a chain with N orientation does not connect to a chain with E orientation in the adjacent block).
Horizontal chains one block above a surface may be walked over. Horizontal chains two blocks above a surface prevent players from traveling past them. Vertical chains block travel if targeted directly, but may be skirted.

Precision is required, but chains can be walked on, allowing for inconspicuous, although somewhat costly, bridges.

Chains can be pushed by [[piston]]s without being broken.

== Trivia ==
* A vertical chain, being a solid, but not a full [[block]], allows for many sizes of [[mob]]s and [[player]]s to pass alongside each piece horizontally.
* Despite its name, it cannot be [[crafted]] into [[chainmail armor]].<ref>{{bug|MC-178979}} - Invalid</ref>
* Chains do not stick together when moved by pistons, regardless of orientation.

Issues

Issues relating to "Ender Dragon" are maintained on the bug tracker. Report issues there.

Trivia

  • Name tags cannot be used on an ender dragon.
  • The ender dragon's hitbox is larger than the ender dragon itself, causing players to be pushed away from it.
  • If you kill a summoned dragon in the Overworld or Nether, it will not create a portal, nor an egg.
  • In spectator mode, you cannot view the perspective of the ender dragon, unlike any other mob.
  • Using F3+b to show hitboxes reveals that the ender dragon's head rotation faces in the opposite direction to that which its real head faces. This is also why the ender dragon faces the wrong way when set in a monster spawner.

Notch-related

  • On Reddit, Notch referred to the ender dragon as a she, and suggested her name to be "Jean?" in the same manner he called the Player "Steve?".[5]
    • Dinnerbone later stated that he thinks the name is officially "Jean?"[6]
    • The Xbox avatar item 'Ender Dragon Pet' has the description 'A cuter, friendlier version of his bigger, less playful Minecraft sister.'- revealing that the ender dragon is female.
  • Before it was textured, Notch reported that he was afraid to texture it as it was a complicated model.[7] In the end, the dragon model was so complex Notch stated that he gave up making the texture manually and wrote a texture packer tool to aid him in adding the texture to the model. Notch also uploaded the code for the tool so others could use the pack.[8][9]
    • Notch joked about how Minecraft was "going next gen" when deadmau5 mentioned this.[10]
  • Notch has uploaded a video showing why ender dragons will not spawn in the main world, as they would destroy any block they come into contact with.[11]
    • On Reddit, Notch explained why ender dragons destroy matter.[12]
