Chestplates are a type of armor that covers the upper body of the player. There are five types of chestplates - Leather Tunic, Chain Chestplate, Iron Chestplate, Diamond Chestplate and Gold Chestplate.

Obtaining[edit | edit source]

Crafting[edit | edit source]

Ingredients Crafting recipe Description

Leather or
Gold Ingot or
Iron Ingot or

Damaged Leather Tunic or
Damaged Golden Chestplate or
Damaged Chain Chestplate or
Damaged Iron Chestplate or
Damaged Diamond Chestplate

The durability of the two Chestplates is added together, plus an extra 5% durability.

Mobs[edit | edit source]

Zombies, zombie pigmen and skeleton have and small chance to spawn wearing any armor. There is a 8.5% chance (9.5% with Looting I, 10.5% with Looting II and 11.5% with Looting III) that the mob will drop a chestplate upon death. It will usually be badly damaged, and may be enchanted.

Natural generation[edit | edit source]

Iron chestplates can be found in 12.2% of stronghold altar chests and 26.0% of village blacksmith chests in groups of 1.

Golden chestplates can be found in 19.2% of nether fortress chests in groups of 1.

Enchanted iron chestplates can be found in 13.4% of End city chests in groups of 1.

Enchanted diamond chestplates can be found in 13.4% of End city chests in groups of 1.

Trading[edit | edit source]

Blacksmith villagers can sell iron chestplates for 10–14 emeralds as one of their second tier trades, enchanted diamond chestplates for 16–19 emeralds as one of their third tier trades, and chainmail chestplates for 11–15 emeralds as one of their fourth tier trades. Leatherworker villagers sell enchanted leather tunics for 7–12 emeralds as their second tier trade. The enchantments will be the same as might be obtained from an enchantment table at levels 5–19.

Usage[edit | edit source]

Chestplates can be placed in the 2nd armor slot of a player's inventory for activation.

Defense points[edit | edit source]

Defense points are each signified by half of a shirt of mail in the armor bar above the health bar. Each defense point will reduce any damage dealt to the player which is absorbed by armor by 4%, increasing additively with the number of defense points. Different materials and combinations of armor provide different levels of defense.

The following table shows the amount of defense points added by chestplates.

Leather 3 (Armor.svgHalf Armor.svg)
Golden 5 (Armor.svgArmor.svgHalf Armor.svg)
Chain 5 (Armor.svgArmor.svgHalf Armor.svg)
Iron 6 (Armor.svgArmor.svgArmor.svg)
Diamond 8 (Armor.svgArmor.svgArmor.svgArmor.svg)

Durability[edit | edit source]

The following table shows the amount of damage each piece of armor can absorb before being destroyed.

Any "hit" from a damage source that can be blocked by armor will remove one point of durability from each piece of armor worn. Damage taken that armor doesn't protect (such as falling or drowning) will not damage the armor, even if it is enchanted to protect against that type of damage. The following chart displays how many hits chest plates can endure.

Leather 81
Golden 113
Chain/Iron 241
Diamond 529

Repair[edit | edit source]

Chestplates may be repaired by using them along with some of their crafting material (leather, gold ingots, iron ingots or diamonds) in an anvil. Chainmail chestplates may be repaired in this way with iron ingots. They may also be repaired by crafting them together with another chestplate of like material.

Enchantments[edit | edit source]

A chestplate can receive the following enchantments:

  1. a b c d
Fire Protection, Blast Protection, Projectile Protection and Protection are mutually exclusive
  2. Only available using enchanted books and an anvil, or by finding an enchanted chestplate in an End city chest.
