This is not an official version history or changelog. For the official list, please visit the Mojang website. For versions prior to Beta 1.8, please check Notch's blog, the Word of Notch.

A (?) denotes version's info here is guess-work, possibly incorrect.

The Alpha development phase started on June 29, 2010 and ended on December 20th, 2010. It was preceded by Infdev and followed by Beta.

  • A server created may generate the world as the Nether. No matter what players do, they won't be able to get out.

  • Fixed a memory leak bug in the server.

  • The SMP join server screen now remembers the latest entered IP.

  • You can now see sneaking players. Names of sneaking players aren’t visible through walls, and are visible a much shorter distance.

  • Leaving sneak mode no longer rapidly plays all the step sounds that it silenced during the sneak.
  • Swords and other weapons now deal damage properly.
  • Fixed dead players logging in as invisible ghosts
  • Made arrows visible and deal damage.
    • No more infinite free arrows.
  • Hoes now produce proper Seeds.
  • Server logging now appends to server.log rather than overwriting it.
  • Fixed minecarts and pigs moving twice as fast as they should when ridden.

Bug Fixes:

  • SMP health now works
    • Added the ability to attack other entities; You can hurt animals, monsters, boats, carts and even other players.

    • Implemented respawning for dead players
    • Visible hurt animations for players and mobs
    • Visible fire on players and mobs
  • Fixed the block re-spawning bug in SMP
  • Players traveling in boats and minecarts long distances now receive terrain updates in SMP

New Bugs:

  • Single player mode is completely broken
  • Leaf decay causes infinite looping, causing the game to freeze.
  • Mobs in multiplayer are much harder to kill than in single player mode.
  • Mobs are sometimes invisible and thus invincible, and can still attack players.
  • When a player dies, their newly respawned body does not appear to other players. These "ghost" players were unable to pick up items, though otherwise able to interact with the world normally from their perspective. This was fixed with the ghosting player log back onto the server or by editing the player's .dat file.

New Bugs:

  • Riding a Minecart in the Nether will cause a Graphical bug and you cant exit. However reloading the world will cause you to fall in lava.
  • In SMP, Boats and Minecarts are indestructible without the use of TNT.
  • In SMP, hitting sheep will drop cloth, but it can't be picked up. However, casting with a fishing rod will knock obtainable cloth, but the sheep will still appear woolen.
  • Getting out of a boat in SMP is difficult and buggy
  • Pressing F4 will spawn Nether Portals (later fixed)

  • Leaf decay is broken.
  • Going higher than 62 meters above sea level in SMP causes the character to be stuck to the sky.
  • Save file size is calculated incorrectly after you visit the Nether, usually to 0.0MB
  • Fake chunks now render after 32,000,000 blocks away from spawn.
  • On rare occasions, an item will not appear in the inventory when picked up and no more of this item will show up in the inventory. This can be fixed by closing the client.

  • Servers
    • The server can now be started in either online/secure mode or offline/insecure mode. A secure server requires all connecting players to first authenticate on www.minecraft.net, then checks that the authentication matches, before letting the player in. A server running in offline mode won’t do any such checks, nor will it ask the client to authenticate, but you can’t be sure that people who connect really are who they claim they are. Offline mode is meant for LAN plan where you know the people connecting to the server.
    • Added ban/pardon commands to ban and unban a player from the game
    • Added ban-ip/pardon-ip commands to ban and unban a specific ip (you have to kick the player manually)
    • Added op/deop commands to add/remove a player from the op list
    • Added player ops. They can send server commands by typing a slash followed by a server command. Server ops can also build/destroy blocks near the spawn area.
    • Made the server save terrain more frequently

  • Destroying snow blocks yields 4-6 Snowballs, allowing for infinite amounts of snow as blocks only take 4 snowballs to make
  • Cacti blocks generate in winter maps.

  • Snow is counted as a full block, therefore:
    • If you walk on snow, you will hear sound of the block under it unless you jump
    • Placing a block on snow will place it above the snow, floating in the air
    • When looking at ice underwater, the texture flickers
    • Snow hovers above half-blocks
  • Riding a pig on ice will make the pig you are riding move at ridiculous speeds
