Academic research about Minecraft[edit source]

I'm a member of a university research group working on multi-user CAD systems. We figure Minecraft is the most succesful multi-user 3d design package in history and we ought to be able to learn a lot from how its users collaborate, so we're working on an academic paper about Minecraft. We're doing this through a survey. We're also interested in talking to a few people who know a lot about collaboration in Minecraft. So, would you like to take the survey? (Won't let me post a link yet, but we can figure something out.) Redistribute it to other people who might be interested? Talk about any of this?

Also, it looks like there is some other academic research on Minecraft out there (e.g. Google "mining data from minecraft Alex Leavitt"). Would it be appropriate to create a wiki page about minecraft in academic research? I obviously have a self-promoting reason to do it, but it might be of general interest as well. Thanks Quatroking[edit source]

Thanks for dealing with all the vandalism and stuff on the admin noticeboard.THANKSDoggey Talk to me here:D

Hi![edit source]

I'm a new user here: DinnerBlazter1. I want to make articles in Romanian, but I don't know how. Because you are an Administrator, can you help me adding the Romanian language? -- DinnerBlazter1 14:26, 25 March 2012 (UTC)

Just start a project and start making subpages using the /ro suffix. For example, Minecraft Wiki/ro. Take a look at the other projects, especially the finished ones, and see how they did it. By the way, if you really want to take this on seriously, raffle up some Romanian friends and have them help you :) Thanks for contributing to the wiki!--Quatroking - MCWiki Administrator 14:42, 25 March 2012 (UTC)

Would we need latin?[edit source]

I was wondering is latin needed for a new project. I know its dead. But, I speak very well in it. Doggey My talk page!!!

Not really, I personally don't see much need in languages that aren't being used around the world in terms of populations.--Quatroking - MCWiki Administrator 13:00, 26 March 2012 (UTC)

Ok. Thanks for telling me.i would have had to pretty much do the whole thing by myself anyway :D Doggey My talk page!!!

I can speak Latin too. –Preceding unsigned comment was added by Japejoop1 (Talk|Contribs) . Please sign your posts with ~~~~

Suggestion for Wiki Rules[edit source]

I've looked though the Rules, but I haven't seen one about signatures or attribution on article pages. I think a rule regarding the use of signatures/attribution should be addressed in the rules. My suggestion is that signatures or any form of attribution are not allowed on articles and article sub-pages. Signatures are only allowed on Talk pages. I think this is a fundamental guideline that should be listed since new users might sign article pages or attribute edits in the Tutorials to themselves or their friends. Examples: [1], [2]

And to prevent further misunderstandings, the exceptions for the Known bugs sub-pages should be stated as a bullet under the signature rule to make it more visible. (I almost flamed another user because of a misunderstanding (and my failure to read the page guidelines thoroughly due to the long paragraph format on that page, or just my rushing through the edits and skimming). Hope you understand - Asterick6 03:08, 29 March 2012 (UTC)

I don't see any reason why this shouldn't. I've always known this as a rule and I think the majority of the userbase, including anonymous users know this as well. Quite frankly you surprised me Astrick6 by pointing out that it isn't written anywhere. --Moxxy 03:13, 29 March 2012 (UTC)
I think many (most?) people intuit this, but it doesn't hurt to have it stated explicitly. Maybe add it to rule #18, since that one concerns signatures already? -- Orthotope 04:07, 29 March 2012 (UTC)
Clarification: My suggestion is to help other users (account or IP) to know about the signature usage guidelines, not because I made a mistake of putting a signature on an article page and want a reminder. That reminder is for the sub-bullet about the Known bugs pages, which I did not know and missed the long paragraph in the beginning, which resulted in my removing of another user's signatures. (I'm getting a bit defensive for some immature...I'll need another wikibreak soon.) - Asterick6 04:22, 29 March 2012 (UTC)
You didn't come of as defensive at all. Even if you were I wouldn't blame you as a certain user who you've dealt with lately has pushed my anger much further. Anyways since me, Orthotope and yourself are all longtime Minecraft wiki editors and in agreement, I'm positive Quatroking would agree as well. If your solution is to make it more clear on the Bug page itself I would add it yourself and Quatroking can look over it when he gets on. On the off chance he disagrees with it he can just undo the edit. --Moxxy 05:04, 29 March 2012 (UTC)

And...[edit source]

Yeah, I have two other friends that like Minecraft. I'll make pages soon. By the way, I saw you wrote on your User Page the sentence 'I am the Boss' in different languages. Can you write in Romanian? The translate is "Eu sunt şefu' pe-aici!" -- DinnerBlazter1 21:09, 3 April 2012 (UTC)

Oh, um, yeah, can I copy the text and images from an English article and just translate it? -- DinnerBlazter1 21:13, 3 April 2012 (UTC)

Start a translate project and gather up some people, then feel free to start translating!--Quatroking - MCWiki Administrator 21:32, 3 April 2012 (UTC)

Why did you do this?[edit source]

I mostly edit Indev pages. I have no idea why did you revert the page from my edits. I will now move it back, with slight changes, not ruining the page... Ldtvproductions 11:21, 9 April 2012 (UTC)

All information you put on the page is false; Rana, as well as the other mobs made by dock, never had animation because the model format never worked properly. Rana also only dropped apples, and her hitbox was throughout her body but not her head. Have you even played Indev, 2.5 years ago?--Quatroking - MCWiki Administrator 12:03, 9 April 2012 (UTC)
Actually yes, i did. When she steps in water, she stays awhile, and then she falls and disappears, dropping resources... So it maybe wan't 100% true. Animations were from Notches blog in a picture [1]. SO that's it, i'm just a nostalgic player of InDev, scrapping some details i see there... But i have no idea how Rana came there before Dock - check the dates...

Great wiki![edit source]

Great job with the wiki! It's really good :) The only flaw I see in it is the templates for defining the articles (templates like needs citation, needs to expand, etc.) They are really simple and I think they have to be designed according to the wiki's theme, Minecraft. I think I could help the wiki in that... What do you think?

Anyway, all the community has done a really good work in maintaining this wiki :) Keep it up!

Minecraft Wiki:Sandbox[edit source]

Hiya! just messaging all other admins about my project, the Minecraft Wiki:Sandbox.
This sandbox initiative is going to try to gauge what the community wants page-wise, and where they want the wiki to go.
the plan is to use that, and see if the wiki can go that way, if our rules need improving, or if it is not viable to go in certain directions with the wiki.
So, there will be many pages that break our current rules, that will be located at "Minecraft Wiki:Sandbox/PAGENAMES".
I'm just messaging to request, unless it is blatant spam, please don't delete these pages.
There is a system to delete these pages if they are too low quality, or not active enough, and a system to tell users what has been deleted, and why. as well as informing them if a page will never be reconsidered. This section of the wiki is to see if we can push the rules, and if we should we push the rules.
I welcome other admins to help take part in this project, to see how the wiki can viably adapt to the community.
Have a good day! :) --Kizzycocoa 22:26, 9 April 2012 (UTC)

Request for slower deletions[edit source]

Hi, I was reading recent changes and I noticed your deletions of Forge design f5 and friends. While these pages do seem inappropriately named, I think it was inappropriate to delete them without discussion given that they were used by another page. I feel that such deletions can be extremely discouraging to new contributors, as they are then unable to recover their work, which might have been appropriate placed elsewhere. I request that in the future you consider, when such content is not an orphaned page with no explanation or low-quality content, requesting that the page be moved appropriately rather than deleting it with no warning.

I have no stake in or considered opinion of the project of which that page was a part, other than that it seems not inappropriate for the wiki provided it is moved to a tutorial section; I mention it only as an example.

kpreid 14:56, 11 April 2012 (UTC)

I'll move them over to subpages of that project and leave them a note to make subpages instead of normal ones in the future.--Quatroking - MCWiki Administrator 16:29, 11 April 2012 (UTC)

"We do not use votes"[edit source]

Talk:Ocelot <--- Apparently, we do use votes. TrollGlaDOS 06:18, 17 April 2012 (UTC)

Pro-tip: Don't be a smartass, especially to a wiki admin. We use votes to get a general consensus on how users feel about issues on the wiki. It does NOT finalize any decisions. Especially when you think 7 people and a 4 to 3 vote is a decent sample. --Moxxy 07:35, 17 April 2012 (UTC)
@TrollGlaDOS No we don't. Even though the discussion/reasons used that format, and I "reached a consensus" based on discussion reasons and overall support, it ultimately depends on the bureaucrat and admins' opinion(s). Votes are only used to support the discussion, and normally only admins (which I am not) go ahead with the decisions on wikis. I've only gone ahead in those instances since the admins are busy with many other things and don't bother much with merge proposals, and due to reasonable explanations for the proposal and popular support of the proposals (as in majority or over half, not a ~1:1 ratio like 4:3), as well as no comments from admins clearly against the proposals; and if they don't agree with it, there is no consensus. - Asterick6 06:35, 12 May 2012 (UTC)

Oaks?[edit source]

Why are you going to use oak instead of apple? Apples do not grow on oaks. TrollGlaDOS 03:16, 18 April 2012 (UTC)

Because we've been using it since forever. The attitude you show while trying to change the naming doesn't help much either.--Quatroking - MCWiki Administrator 19:03, 18 April 2012 (UTC)
But it's incorrect! Just because we're used to it, doesn't mean it's correct! Look, if Mojang didn't intend for them to be apple trees, then they wouldn't drop apples. Also, what attitude do I show about the naming, anyway? TrollGlaDOS 19:24, 18 April 2012 (UTC)
So am I hereby to assume that you have note of Mojang claiming this? I'd be happy to see that. Also, if you must know, Wikipedia has a lovely article on a kind of apple that grows on many species of oak. Besides, oak leaves have an apple drop rate of 1/200 (0.5%) and I'm fairly sure that apple trees grow more apples than that.--Quatroking - MCWiki Administrator 13:54, 19 April 2012 (UTC)
Okay, so Mojang hasn't said anything either way. As for oak apples, I think nature wants to troll me. As for the drop rate, consider 1. Bugs in the fruit, 2. Bruised fruit, 3. Rotten fruit, 4. Unripe fruit, and 5. Punching fruit tends to damage it. Anyway, truce. That's Mama Luigi to you, Mario! <--- Also, I like memes. That's my peace offering. LOL
With the introduction of the new wooden slab types, Oak is now the confirmed name. –ultradude25 (T|C) at 06:47, 27 April 2012 (UTC)

Semi-protection[edit source]

Quatroking, can you semi-protect the Pocket Edition upcoming features? There are too many disruptive edits occurring as well as IP vandalism. - Asterick6 21:32, 12 May 2012 (UTC)

My adminship[edit source]

I did a lot of contributing to Minecraft Wiki lately, so would you like to make me an administrator? --BrandonSkyPimenta (Need help?) 23:24, 14 May 2012 (UTC)

Quality over quantity. Making a bunch of edits doesn't instantly qualify you to be an admin; and even if it did, you certainly wouldn't qualify. You've made 3 edits outside of your user page, all of those on a template that is not used.
Also, we don't usually listen to admin requests (aside from ones for other languages that don't have many/any admins yet), instead we pick people that we have seen making exceptional contributions to the wiki and ask them if they want to be admin. –ultradude25 (T|C) at 01:37, 15 May 2012 (UTC)
This is unfair are you guys are confused. Back in the beginning of May 15, 2012 I uploaded File:Stop icon.png under a Creative Commons license 20px BY-SA. See my contribs I made and actions I made in order to know me that I should be an admin and a bureaucrat. However, autoconfirmed users have the ability to suppress redirects when moving pages so the original page is deleted and the new title is created without having to become an admin or bureaucrat. So where's the correct place to request adminship? --BrandonSkyPimenta (Need help?) 10:39, 15 May 2012 (UTC)
What has uploading an image got to do with being an admin? –ultradude25 (T|C) at 13:32, 15 May 2012 (UTC)

No. Don't call us, we call you. Amount of contributions does not influence the possibility of us calling out to you a lot, quality and attitude do. And as for bureaucrats, I doubt that we'll be appointing any at all in the next few months if not years. --Quatroking - MCWiki Administrator 14:06, 15 May 2012 (UTC)
I would like to become an administrator for my reasons:
  1. I made a LOT of contributing to MCW. Please see the contribs I made and actions I made.
  2. I'm helpful and don't vandalize. Since I did a lot of contribs and actions to MCW, you should be glad I'm helping Minecraft Wiki.
  3. I need to access administrative features. I need to block and unblock users, delete and undelete pages, etcetera.
  4. I want to be a bureaucrat. I also want to be a bureaucrat because I need to change user rights and do other things that bureaucrats would do. Also because of the reasons listed above.
--BrandonSkyPimenta (Need help?) 16:53, 15 May 2012 (UTC)
Your reasons are terrible.
  1. You've only made 44 edits. Most of which are in your userspace, or relating to your userspace and are of no benefit to the wiki. The few edits you've made that are outside your userspace (not even 10), don't contribute to anything. You've made a useless template, randomly changed another template's colours, and removed a tag from a page that seems to still apply.
  2. Helpful? How is editing your userpage helpful to anyone but yourself?
  3. Why do you need to block users? It seems you're just listing off random admin functions so it seems like you know what you're talking about.
  4. And here it is obvious you don't know what you're talking about. A normal sized wiki really never needs more than a few bureaucrats (Wikipedia is a massive wiki and they only have 34 bureaucrats). Its only purpose is to perform rare tasks.
ultradude25 (T|C) at 17:57, 15 May 2012 (UTC)
OK, I still want to be an admin on MCW because I've now made more edits to pages about Minecraft. See my contribs and actions for more information. I have been helping when editing the MCW pages. I want to block users for vandalism, spam, and other things, including blanking user pages. Also I don't want to be a bureaucrat yet. --BrandonSkyPimenta (Need help?) 21:22, 15 May 2012 (UTC)
you know... making random useless edits won't help you be an admin. and also, jugding by what kind of edits you do, making you admin would be a terrible idea, especially when you mension blanking user pages. If you did get adminship, I know exactly who the first victim would be (me). either cut it out with the admin stuff, or start being helpful. KingFlameTail 21:50, 15 May 2012 (UTC)
"I don't want to be a bureaucrat yet" Haha! You're acting as if you're going to get anything. We've already told you we don't accept admin requests. Even if we did, you would never be accepted.
In fact seeing your recent edits I doubt you'll be here much longer. Most of your edits are just bad, in some cases I'd even call it vandalism (removing Mojang copyright from images, for example). –ultradude25 (T|C) at 02:25, 16 May 2012 (UTC)
Even if I'm vandalizing images by removing the {{License Mojang}} tag from their summaries, and you don't usually listen to requests (you pick which people make exceptional contribs and ask them if they should be an admin or not), I want to become an admin, but I'll have to listen to everything you tell me to do. I'll no longer make disruptive contribs. --BrandonSkyPimenta (Need help?) 22:16, 16 May 2012 (UTC)
You will never become admin, end of discussion. --Quatroking - MCWiki Administrator 23:20, 16 May 2012 (UTC)

What impresses me though, is his grammar. It's much better then most adults I know. –ultradude25 (T|C) at 04:43, 17 May 2012 (UTC)
I am mature enough to become an admin. I wish I could access administrative features on MCW because I'm making more edits to my userspace, even though many of my edits were falsely reverted. I made few edit wars, but it does happen and you know it happens. I created an awesome talk page and signature. Now go to user rights, switch to my username (BrandonSkyPimenta), check "administrator" and save. --BrandonSkyPimenta (Need help?) 14:48, 17 May 2012 (UTC)
someone is sure eager to compensate for something.
in other news, this is now my most favourite talk page topic. we need to use this as an example for how not to become an admin. --Kizzycocoa 15:34, 17 May 2012 (UTC)
I love how it's no longer "I can haz adminship plz?" and is now "Make me an Admin NOW!" --Moxxy 15:51, 17 May 2012 (UTC)
oops, looks like Ultradude25 "accidentaly" hit blaock instead of admin. I hope he comes up with a better argument in 2 weeks, cause reverting stupid edits by vandals is starting to get boring. KingFlameTail 17:06, 17 May 2012 (UTC)

It wasn't Ultradude25, Quatroking did it. Too bad. I was enjoying it, except the reverting part. Ow well. Back to the normal stuff again. - CrazyBliep NL Admin 19:25, 17 May 2012 (UTC)

  • The dogpiling on the boy, particularly after he has been blocked is unnecessary and really quite distasteful, though. I note a number of followup comments by people I'd have hoped would have been more... understanding. I'd always advise following a strict rule when dealing with vandalism and other abuses: never add any more commentary than 'revert vandalism', 'video violates wiki rule X, removing', and so on, particularly if you're starting to get irritated. Keep it as impersonal as possible. It's less inflammatory, doesn't gratify trolls, doesn't cause needless upset, etc. Gloating in a case like this is cruel, especially if he really is that much younger than the rest of us. There are 30 million MC users, nearly. That means there will be people of all ages playing it, although the average age is probably mid-late teen. (Younger than for most major games, I'm sure.) So the Wiki does need to try to allow for very young users like this precocious fellow as well as full adults. BTW, I'm posting here as this seems to be the central point for this discussion, not because I'm criticising Quatroking. -- 03:13, 18 May 2012 (UTC)
I suppose your right. I hope when he comes back that he decides to help the wiki just for the sake of making it better instead of making pointless edits in a futile attempt to be admin (if there anyone who should get an adminship, its Moxxy.

Deleted page and block[edit source]

Quatroking, why didn't you let me know that the page was violating the rules before deleting the page like that? I would have removed the "personal attack" content and just made it into a page for watching other users's replies. My intention was to use the page to keep track of talk page replies on other talk pages, and to keep track of vandal edits. I admit the other content took it too far and I shouldn't have done what I did, but I would have deleted all of it if you'd just let me know beforehand. I'm sorry for lashing out like that on other people, and it's my problem for doing that, but next time can you please let me know on my talk page why I got blocked? And I'll be going on a trip for a few weeks anyways, so thanks for blocking me to keep me from continuing to edit since I'm addicted and getting a bit unstable from spending too much time doing this. 01:39, 28 June 2012 (UTC)

Upcoming Features Page[edit source]

Is it possible to lock this page for editing, its constantly being updated with false dates despite me placing in "July 2012", people continue to add specific days for "release"

How APIs work[edit source]

Because APIs require a lot of bandwidth and can easily be abused (not caching the results properly, using it to load data every refresh of a page), ALL apis lock down to a single IP address and monitor number of hits. (see: Facebook API, Google API, Netflix API).

The use of registration and ip address prevents abuse. If you don't like it, don't use it. I'm putting it back, I changed the wording so it doesn't look official. --Mineverse 16:15, 19 July 2012 (UTC)

Template:Xbutton[edit source]

I'm wondering why you switched to rl/rt/lt/lr for the bumper and trigger buttons. They don't seem to make any sense, as they don't match the name or label on those buttons; lb/rb/lt/rt would be more logical. -- Orthotope 10:43, 1 August 2012 (UTC)

Moving the bug pages and subpages[edit source]

Hi, I was looking through the talk page for the Known Bugs page, and saw the discussion and proposals at Talk:Known bugs#New name discussion. Will you be moving the pages to Issues and renaming the snapshot release articles to "Snapshot x"? Also, I think the proposal I came across at Minecraft Wiki talk:Community portal#Known bugs and subpages rename is a good one. Will you be moving the pages and setting the main "Issues" article for the current official release at Issues instead of using a root page like the one we have now? I think this proposal might be more helpful than the system we have right now at Known Bugs. --M0rphzone 23:44, 3 August 2012 (UTC)

In regards to Xbox_360_Edition_upcoming_features[edit source]

That page seriously needs protection, protection which only allows admins to edit. The release date of updates is probably the most controversial and debated "edit" that people want to put onto this wiki. As you can see by the history, either idiots, trolls, or vandals constantly put nonsense or their unconfirmed guesses in stating them as fact. This is not okay.

The page SHOULD look like this - accurate information with no guessing bullshit. Sources are provided.

Please fully protect the page to admins only. The community is generally too immature to handle it. These are the dangers of allowing anyone to edit (though registration is currently required).

A little more protection[edit source]

Hi Quatroking, i want to know who i can protect the Italian MinecraftWiki a little more, i explain what i've just say. I want to block the creation/modification of pages by IP address, allowing it only at registered user. That's all ;)
(A plugin to combat spam:
--Raffox97 it.Wiki Admin 21:00, 26 November 2012 (UTC)

That's not likely to happen. The Minecraft Wiki was originally locked down to prevent anons from editing, but earlier this year Curse lifted this restriction, without the community requesting it and in the face of protests from some editors afraid of an influx of spam and vandalism. As for an extension to help combat spam/vandalism, let me point out that the Italian MC wiki already has AbuseFilter installed. ;) ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 21:38, 26 November 2012 (UTC)
I'd also like to note that the amount of spam we have at the moment is the same amount if not less than what we had with anon editing blocked.--Quatroking - MCWiki Administrator 17:14, 27 November 2012 (UTC)

"collapse" bug on dutch snapshot page[edit source]

Hi Quatroking,

I resently started to translate the snapshot page from english to dutch. In the beginning when I used the "collapse/expand" command it showed up as collapsed(class="collapsible collapsed collapse-button-none"), wich was good to hide the non translated part of the topic. For some reason the formula has changed and doesn't work this way anymore, it always "shows" now(nothing shows when I put "collapsed" in the line now). On the dutch site it also has changed from collapse/expand to hide/show. I've messaged CrazyBliep about this problem, and he knows this has changed, but he doesn't have time to look into this. Can you or any of the other admins have a look into this??

Hey, Quatro![edit source]

When could articles not have anymore the "/" and the sign of that language (by example, The Player/ro)? Or, if there exists a Romanian article, by example, that is "signed" "/ro", can it be added to the language list on the left? DinnerBlazter1 17:58, 12 December 2012 (UTC)

When there are enough articles of one language.--Quatroking - MCWiki Administrator 20:53, 17 December 2012 (UTC)

Somethings Wrong[edit source]

My ip was recently blocked after i attemped to sign in to this wiki using my wiki account then i came up with something like "you have been blocked by the abuse filter" and all i did was sign in with my existing account can you unblock me My account name is MinecraftZer0 03:21, 14 December 2012 (UTC)

Which wiki account were you trying to sign into? 'MinecraftZer0' is not registered here. -- Orthotope 04:32, 14 December 2012 (UTC)
Keep in mind that the wiki is separate from Mojang's website and the Minecraft login system, so your Minecraft and Mojang accounts cannot be used to sign in on the wiki. ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 09:03, 14 December 2012 (UTC)

Xmas Chest[edit source]

Hi, WHy did you delete the XMas Chest page? It is a valid page as texture files bearing the name xmas chest have been found. -Deonyi 22:22, 14 December 2012 (UTC)

Texture files do not confirm upcoming features--Quatroking - MCWiki Administrator 14:07, 15 December 2012 (UTC)

But they are in the Minecraft.jar as well as skis.

Can you...[edit source]

...please answer at my question above, "Hey, Quatro"? -- DinnerBlazter1 16:49, 17 December 2012 (UTC)

One more question[edit source]

Enough articles means that ABSOLUTELY ALL ARTICLES AND TEMPLATES in this Wiki must be translated, in Romanian by example? If yes, someone please kill me... -- DinnerBlazter1 13:14, 3 January 2013 (UTC)

Talk deletion[edit source]

You deleted a talk page in my user space (Special:Log/delete 16:49, 10 January 2013) and didn't give a reason. I don't remember requesting the deletion -- am I misremembering or was there another reason? —Munin295 · Grid Book and Quill.png Grid Stone Pickaxe.png · 17:10, 10 January 2013 (UTC)

Minecraft Wiki Video[edit source]

My names James, im from Jay Apps. I've recently started a new video series, called PlanetCraft. Basically, its a documentary series looking at the mobs in minecraft, scripted on the facts from the Minecraft Wiki. I see for some of your Mobs pages you have some videos giving information on them, but not all pages do. Therefore, I would like to fill this gap and thats why Im contacting you. The series has had great feed back and is growing very fast. I cant add a link because of the of the abuse rule: Adding external links by new users, but you can find the series by searching: jayappsserver planetcraft.

Bot and AWB access[edit source]

Hello, I'm Jeffw. I'm an experienced wiki user of five years, and I've began to edit the Minecraft Wiki. Recently, I've discovered that no bots are active on the wiki! This is most unfortunate, since I needed to have some work done. I've used AWB many times on the English Wikipedia and it would be great if you could approve of my plan to make a bot account, User:Jeffbot, and perform automated tasks for everyone in the community. Thanks. --Jeffw (talk) (contribs) 21:33, 8 June 2013 (UTC)
