Aether[edit]

This sounds like it's going to be pretty similar to the Aether... Should we note that on the page? Fruckert 17:52, 19 May 2011 (UTC)

I don't see any reason to. So far, the *only* similarity is floating islands, and the Aether is hardly the only mod that does that. ダイノガイ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 18:05, 19 May 2011 (UTC)
I believe it is unnecessary to make the comparison to a current mod(s) for it doesn't support anything about the sky realm besides being similar in geography.--Gatler 22:09, 20 May 2011 (UTC)

Notch has contacted the people who made the Aether mod, and he does admit that sky dimension is based on the aether. --Tsar Bomba 19:50, 26 May 2011 (UTC)

Do you have any proof of this? An unsubstantiated claim is not enough to add something to an article. ダイノガイ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 19:12, 28 May 2011 (UTC)

I would say it was worth to mention that the "Sky Dimension" probably is based on the popoular suggestion (not mod), The Aether as the Aether started as a suggestion and only later became a mod. Taurentius 10:57, 28 May 2011 (UTC)

Maybe we should add something about the Aether mod, if only to avoid confusion.. --Gemberkoekje 19:50, 29 May 2011 (UTC)

Wow, I did just that without seeing your post...really! --Yurisho 19:54, 29 May 2011 (UTC)
I sort-of noticed lol, well, problem solved i guess --Gemberkoekje 19:54, 29 May 2011 (UTC)

DANGIT! i wish it would be like the mod. PPLLLZZZZ make it the aether cuz the mod doesnt work for my computer.-- Reallitup2

Actually, I think it goes more or less like this: The Aether mod was inspired by the map type in Indev, and the Sky Dimension wa probably inspired by the Aether. So really, the Sky Dimension was inspired by the map type in Indev. -Apocalyptic Builder 15:37, 5 February 2012 (UTC)

Dimension?[edit]

I'm fairly sure from the screenshots and what Notch has said that it is in another "dimension" just like the nether, with no true connection to the "real" world. --{ Fishrock123 } (Talk) 02:23, 20 May 2011 (UTC)

'heaven'[edit]

It would be useless if there was a heaven in Minecraft. Because everyone would make a portal, go there and then Notch will be adding updates to a world in which isn't used as much. It probably will be similar to the Nether, with aggressive mobs as well, just floating... --Rocĸetor talk 06:33, 20 May 2011 (UTC)

We don't even know how it's going to look like. I agree that the Nether is kinda useless to visit because of the small amount of unique blocks, but if this dimension has a large amount of useful blocks and mobs, or even if it has the same blocks than normal world, it would be kinda interesting for those who like exotic landscape ... or really loved the Island maps from Indev (like me). I just don't want this dimension to be nothing more than a "floating Nether". oɩı 03:07, 28 May 2011 (UTC)

Doesn't seem like my kind of heaven. If you fall, you die? Right? Falling to far drops you into the damaging void does it not? --HexZyle 23:30, 14 July 2011 (UTC)

No the void of the skylands would probably act like a portal to the overworld (since it's theoretically above the overworld) and would either drop you off the cloud layer of the overworld in a position relative to the skylands, or would just spawn you in your bed if you're dreaming. It would also be nice if there were rare sky shrines that would spawn in forest clearings, that would (probably by standing on some magical pedestral block with sunlight/moonlight shining on it from above for a while) warp you directly into a shrine directly above it in the skylands (think like the angel island shrines in sonic games).Codebracker 08:36, 25 March 2012 (UTC)

Flight and the possibility of new mobs[edit]

By the looks of it, the islands are pretty far apart. So my guess is notch is adding a way for players to fly. Also there may be new mobs wich adds a possibility of new items. Third, yes this is going to be a lot like the nether, but he gave hell a chance, why not the opposition?

1 - Possibly Dragons.
2 - Because if it was a heaven, people would create that portal pronto, and everyone would get bored in the heaven, lose interest in MineCraft etc etc etc. --Rocĸetor talk

wasn't the aether inspired by the Indev floating island map type?[edit]

shouldn't it be mentioned? why was it taken down?--Yurisho 07:59, 22 May 2011 (UTC)

I presume it was taken down because the person who first made an Aether mod was actually inspired by the nether, not indev.--Neil2250 08:37, 22 May 2011 (UTC)
let's say it was one or more of them or just ask the guy who makes the mod...--Yurisho 20:25, 23 May 2011 (UTC)

"Floating Nether"[edit]

this is a bit off topic (well, i made the topic and this is exactly to it, but to uuh.. for the Sky Dimension, this might be a bit off topic :p) but yea.. when i saw the first screenshots, i started to wonder, if there will be new block types for dirt and stuff.. nether was at first only dirt and sand and then Notch made netherrack and soul sand.. well.. this led me to wonder, that Sky Dimension would be even more horrifing than nether it self, if the dirt would be netherrack, the place is all dark and there'd be ghasts and zombie pigmen and stuff.. a "floating nether".. (well.. thats all for this topic's topic :p) the "floating nether" led me to think of an event "hell on earth" when stones, cobblestones and dirt transforms into netherrack and ghasts and zombie pigmen all spawns in the overworld, wanting you dead.. that could be a scary event.. well.. this (suprise suprise) led me to think of something very similar.. Notch is already making that kind of event into the game, when moon becomes red and zombies comes through walls wanting you dead. well uuh.. what was my point? my point is, after all this none-sense typing i go absolutely off topic: i really need to contact Notch and tell him what i've got in mind.. big point i got here, huh? well.. not to dissapoint you that much, as one of the previous topics said, that there could come new mobs, and player would be able to fly, im almost more than sure, that when Sky Dimension will be released; Dragons will be part of the game \o/ And also to point out, Sky Dimension will not be in the 1.6 update, but i give my hopes up, it to be released in the next update 1.7 and for something extra, for those who dont know about it yet and did read this all the way to the end, the game's full version is planned to be released 11.11.2011 WOO \o/ Tenrashack 19:15, 24 May 2011 (UTC)

Maps in the Datamined Sky Dimensions[edit]

Its said in the trivia: If you select a map while in the unfinished version of the Sky Dimension, your game will display the saving chunks screen and crash. This is probably due to a similar bug that occurs when trying to map an exposed portion of the void. Then so what is this? Map in Sky Dimension STealTHB90 16:39, 5 June 2011 (UTC)

Maybe the bug got fixed in 1.6.6. Calinou - talk × contribs » 16:42, 5 June 2011 (UTC)

Erroneous use of the word "Datamined"[edit]

Datamining is the science of finding patterns in datasets using statistics and AI. Look it up. I do not see how enabling a feature in a codebase has anything to do with datamining: there are no stats, datasets or patterns involved whatsoever.Editing...SkyNT 01:52, 28 June 2011 (UTC)

Language is a fluid evolving thing, if your language doesn't change it's called a dead language. Datamining has also picked up a meaning of looking through the code to find features that are not turned on, and in gaming circles that's the only way you'll find it used. Daropedia 12:49, 2 September 2011 (UTC)
Can you point to cases where the word has been used in that way? Some quick Googling didn't turn up any such usage for me, and not even Urban Dictionary records the definition you're espousing. ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 18:41, 2 September 2011 (UTC)
Wouldn't this be a source hack, achieved through reverse-engineering? I fail to see what data has to do with it. --gmip 58.106.67.247 02:53, 12 October 2011 (UTC)

Only Chickens?[edit]

I've actually had spiders spawn due to a spider spawner in SMP with the DreamLand plugin so yeah.... It actually was a pig spawner but there were a bunch of spiders in the dungeon. Electrk 23:57, 2 July 2011 (UTC)

Chickens are the only one that spawns naturally. A spawner is unnatural as they are forced to spawn. :) --Rocĸetor talk 09:13, 4 October 2011 (UTC)
  • Wrong page, and that bug was fixed. It simply spawned spiders because in SMP spawners were bugged to always show pigs.

A Kind of Suggestion...[edit]

I think that the Sky Dimension should include moving islands. if all the separate islands moved around it would make the game more interesting. It would add another mechanic, and if the sky dimension isn't going to contain many unique blocks, then it should be as aesthetically different as possible. In my opinion it would be fantastic awe inspiring and stupefying if the islands would float around (slowly) and possibly collide? it would make "heaven" more chaotic and add a danger to the new area.

Although the amount of coding (and ensuing bugs) going into that would be considerably large, maybe possible? (thinking of airship mod atm) --HexZyle 04:00, 12 July 2011 (UTC)
Um, wouldn't this be more broken than boats? The server would have to render it, and every client would have to receive updates about every movement of every single block. Moving slower doesn't really make it any easier, as you will still experience latency issues with where things appear to be for different clients. Being able to build and remove a blocks would make this a programming nightmare --gmip 58.106.67.247 02:59, 12 October 2011 (UTC)

obtainable blocks[edit]

since the nether is fully made of blocks only found there it would be stupid if the sky demension was just like the ground world. i mean with the addition of a new type of land we want some differences from the ground world.like new blocks different fluids (like healing water or angel tears) more tools mobs or just anything but if they were to add more blocks they would need to add more than just 3 like the nether. --A Big Mojang Lover 00:56, 14 July 2011 (UTC)

Not necissarily. The nether is extremely useful on its own. Soulsand, glowstone and netherrack are only icing on the cake. The sheer quantity of lava, creepy (and neat) atmosphere, challenging monsters and transportation speed make the nether extremely useful without including the factor of the unique blocks. I hope the sky dimension has something similar or just as useful as the nether does in terms of features. --HexZyle 04:14, 14 July 2011 (UTC)
yeah but people would get bored of it just like in the nether. i think it would be better if there were more craftable items only found in the sky demension (off topic!)and there should be an update that makes nether items craftable in more ways. --A Big Mojang Lover 12:53, 16 July 2011 (UTC)
It's still 4 months until the official release of minecraft, (and not mentioning updates after that) and the Sky Dimension hasn't even been released yet. (its map generator has been, but no items, I'm sure Notch has already several new features for it well underway that we have no idea about) If it comes out and is boring, then you have a right to complain. But what we have seen so far is only a piece of the draft. Not even an entire draft, just a piece of it. We can't go making suggestions when we don't even quite know what the sky dimension really even is or how much development has been put into it. (sorry, i rambled on a bit there) --HexZyle 12:43, 17 July 2011 (UTC)

Literal inversion?[edit]

While the two are plainly intended to be contrasted... How in the world is the Nether "filled with sky?" That doesn't make any sense, you can't have a sky in an enclosed space unless you're talking about something like the crystal spheres from Spelljammer where the sky that people see when they look up from the surface of a world is actually the interior surface of an enclosed space which envelopes the world in question. 174.32.68.85 04:47, 11 September 2011 (UTC)

It means air blocks. The Nether is like a vast amount of rock with pockets of air. --Cby 05:49, 11 September 2011 (UTC)

1.8?[edit]

Hmm... I thought notch said he would add the Sky Dimension (The Aether) in 1.8, If he did, can someone tell me how to make a portal there if they know? -Themole2

There's no way to make a portal and notch hasn't put anything in to be able to get there yet. On the server I play on, we accessed it using the /warp command. - Nebetsu

http://i.imgur.com/ewZvk.png *FACEDESK* - Nebetsu

The Sky Dimension IS NOT the same thing as the Aether; the former is an official in-game area (though not finished or accessible without mods), and the latter is a mod. The two have absolutely nothing to do with each other. ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 01:20, 25 September 2011 (UTC)

I know that. My picture (http://i.imgur.com/ewZvk.png ) is NOT of the Aether mod. It is what happens when you use multiworld (or multiverse. I don't remember which) to travel to the Sky Dimension. Is there a fix to this? The server I play on uses this place. - Nebetsu

Infinite water/lavafall[edit]

I dont know about these sky dimensions. water and lavafalls just STOP when they hit void. that doesn't really look any good at all. until notch does something about that i don't think that sky dimensions are a good idea.

Although mild coding does actually go to -64, i dont think it'd be possible to allow blocks into the void like water/lava. I think a smarter idea would be to just removing the water/lavafall blocks altogether and just keep the ponds/lakes.--Neil2250 18:04, 22 September 2011 (UTC)

Wait- are you saying remove flowing water and leave only source blocks? --Captain_Clam 01:26, 25 September 2011 (UTC)

Would it be possible to add coding that creates a visual effect of the water dropping down into the void, rather than placing actual blocks there? --HexZyle 01:20, 26 September 2011 (UTC)

Yes, It could be like how blocks stop being solid 32000000 blocks away from the center.

How about a one block thick mist/cloud layer above the void being generated in the sky dimension. It would be about 20% see-through and the player would see the water/lava falling into the clouds. The effect of falling into the mist would probably teleport you back into yoour bed, or make you fall from the cloud layer of the overworld relatively bellow the skyworld.Codebracker 08:25, 25 March 2012 (UTC)

1.8.1 Skylands Chunk Error[edit]

BEFORE you rage at me, I found this on Creative Mode on Beta 1.8.1 with NO Mods or Texture Packs installed.

SkylandsError.png

Anyone got ideas? :L --Rocĸetor talk 07:34, 4 October 2011 (UTC)

Can you give the co-ordinates and seed? Was the world first generated in 1.8.1 or a previous version? --HexZyle 07:41, 4 October 2011 (UTC)
It was first generated in 1.7 HOWEVER it still incorporates 1.8 features and the rest of the map is fine (this error only appeaars for about 8 chunks)

Seed on F3 is unavailable for some weird reason but I could try to host the map on mediafire or something. --Rocĸetor talk 08:48, 4 October 2011 (UTC)

That looks like an ordinary terrain generation mismatch. I don't see it having anything to do with the Sky Dimension. —KPReid 16:09, 4 October 2011 (UTC)

I can see it now. On first glance i thought it exposed the void, but it doesn't. You have obvously generated this world in an earlier version then updated to 1.8 --HexZyle 16:14, 4 October 2011 (UTC)
Actually, it acts much like the actual Sky Dimension. There IS void below the chasms and stuff like that. It most likely was mismatched with the Sky Dimensions' biome properties. If you want I can take another picture showing the void at daytime. --Rocĸetor talk 20:53, 5 October 2011 (UTC)
That would be appreciated. Update that file instead of uploading a new one. --HexZyle 02:32, 8 October 2011 (UTC)
Done! --Rocĸetor talk 09:20, 9 October 2011 (UTC)
Wow, that is wack. It does seem that 1.8.1 generates the sky dimension biome alongside other biomes. Obviously an overlooked error there, perhaps we could suddenly walk into a nether biome also? :P --HexZyle 04:03, 10 October 2011 (UTC)
Nether biomes (aka Hell) can be generated via a world corruption. This may be the same thing but this is just to say that the Sky Dimension is in the files. I'm going to add this to the main page, but only under bugs. Feel free to delete it if it's unneeded. --Rocĸetor talk 04:58, 10 October 2011 (UTC)
Yeah, that's what i thought. The sky biome hasn't been seperated from the other biomes so there is a chance it can generate in the overworld. obviously a bug. --HexZyle 05:26, 10 October 2011 (UTC)

Ugh, just had this happen to me, just today. Was running a server on 1.9pre-3, and the server spawn was about 200z 200x. I closed down the server last night, and when i started playing tonight with my little brother, i ended up dying, and discovered the respawn had been changed to about 0,0. This frustrated me, and i attempted to navigate the huge drops and cavern openings around me where i had spawned, looked over the edge of a cliff, and realised i was in a sky dimension chunk. Annoyed the crap out of me that such a large piece of crap had damaged my world file >:(, and also changed my spawn zone. Now im going to have to edit the spawn with NBT. What a pain. --HexZyle 11:31, 11 October 2011 (UTC)

Haha, we got my SP world and brought it into MP for my server and an Abandoned Mineshaft generated to float over the void. One of the peasants were exploring and fell off the edge into the void!!! XD and also to prevent world corruption in MP, dont forcequit terminal/cmd prompt, use the /stop command --Rocĸetor talk 05:00, 12 October 2011 (UTC)
I do use the /stop command :( also one time (same server, shortly after), a big bunch of all the precious materials that my brother and i just finished hauling up from a mine just diappeared out of the double chest. all the items we had beforehand were there. i have a feeling chest items werent saved properly and they reappeared back in the mine chests. haven't checked yet. --HexZyle 12:06, 12 October 2011 (UTC)

Sorry, but you created a creative world in 1.7.3? how did you did this? NaNdummy 19:46, 18 November 2011 (UTC)

I generated the world in 1.7.3. I then merged it to a Multiplayer map and enabled creative for myself in a 1.8.1 server. Sorry for the bump, but this is how i did it.

If you're asking how to change gamemodes in singleplayer, the mod TooManyItems does that. --Rocĸetor talk 04:56, 8 December 2011 (UTC)

Well it's not removed yet, it's still in the game. When The End is released, we place a {{Outdated}} tag on this --HexZyle 05:55, 13 October 2011 (UTC)

Did Notch ever confirm Jeb's comment? It's entirely possible, since Notch was the only one we can confirm to have worked on the Sky dimension, that Jeb was mistaken. 98.151.233.238 07:32, 21 October 2011 (UTC)

Possible remake?[edit]

Well since The End doesn't have any similarities to Sky Dimension, exept that The End is in region 2 where Sky Dimension used to be, is it posible that it is gonna be in some future update, because it was confirmed some time ago, and I doubt all that work will be wasted, maybe it will just get renamed into somthing like Dream realm or other and placed in region 3.

Excuse my newbishness, but possibly region [—] or region [?] as, with the ender replacing it, it isn't really accessable. Technically, the Ender IS the Sky Realm, but literally, it's not.

The End was in Pre-release 3, but a bug caused it to generate inside the Overworld, causing the overworld to shape in giant floating islands. So in the development history of minecraft, they are the same thing, but technically (to the players) they are not. This should keep its own page, because it was far different to The End, and was a historical piece of community discussion and minecraft history. Just like how Crying Obsidian has a page seperate to Bed. --HexZyle 23:05, 16 October 2011 (UTC)
Well guys, it looks like the Sky Dimension is back to Minecraft, because if you read it as of today (11/14/2011), it says "The Sky Dimension is an upcoming dimension in Minecraft, to go along with The Nether and The End." and "However, Notch tweeted much later that a different "Skylands" dimension is still in the making. This version, completely seperate from the End, is now set to replace the original idea". So, yah! It's back. alexkill51 - 14 November 2011
I asked Notch in twitter (https://twitter.com/nandummy/status/137596223564689408). I hope he gives me an answer :(

NaNdummy 19:54, 18 November 2011 (UTC)

The explanation of no weather[edit]

From what I see, the Sky Dimension is explained to have no weather because it's 'above the clouds'. However, the article on Rain says that Notch explained that the rain does not come from the visible clouds, because they come from another layer of clouds further up. Unless the Sky Dimension is above both those layers, I think it's safe to say that the no-weather explanation is faulty. 78.86.133.27 13:37, 26 February 2012 (UTC)

New world height and the Sky Dimension/Islands?[edit]

Hi all, just been thinking about the new world height and a though popped into my head. What if the height has been increase to include the sky dimension above the clouds? Or at least sky islands. The higher world limit now would allow the sky dimension to be implemented in the overworld with ease; the sky dimension used to be above the clouds, which the new height limit would allow just like the original but closer to home. --Ben11113333 13:58, 1 March 2012 (UTC)

Dragon Lair[edit]

The End is the Enderdragon's lair, so maybe the Red Dragon will live here.

Red dragons, he said there would be many of them.Codebracker 08:27, 25 March 2012 (UTC)

That's it! Like people said, there could be a way to fly. Maybe the Red Dragon could be tameable and you can fly on it! Sandvich101 12:03, 5 May 2012

Sky Dimension (I hope Notch will read this!)[edit]

Seeing what everybody's ideas are, I would think it would be epic if there was to be a Sky Dimension, and I think that this Sky Dimension should have a better name... Like Sky World...but that may be a bit to "common" for you others out there... well, I think this Sky Dimension should host the Red Dragon, be a place where the only way in is to build a special bed (with the bed sheets being blue instead of red), and that I hope I am not making Notch feel like I am forcing him to do so, for nobody likes getting e-mails, posts, or comments ordering that you must do it right away. Neither do I. --Link_VII 18:38, 10 May 2012 (UTC)

Notch doesn't have anything to do with minecraft anymore... --50.136.155.163 03:57, 11 May 2012 (UTC)

What do you mean by that? He's the one who's been making this game all this time. Codebracker 15:34, 17 May 2012 (UTC)

Meaning, that Notch stopped working on minecraft a while back, he is no longer the lead developer, jeb is. Apparently, he isn't going to have anything more to do with minecrfat's development.

Wow, a new dimension?[edit]

This looks great to see a Sky Dimension. And, some pointless note: When I get in Exit Portal the game just ENDED?! Why!

  • No, just a scrapped idea. There will likely never be a sky dimension. 71.7.90.185 01:22, 15 June 2012 (UTC)

The End[edit]

Why are The End and the Sky Dimension two separate articles? Take a look at them, they are obviously the same thing? Floating islands with vast nothingness below. Just because dimension-specific blocks were added with the official version does not make it a different thing? Felinoel 14:39, 15 June 2012 (UTC)

Here's a list of all the differences between the skylands and the End:

The End

  • Very dark, no sun, moon, or stars
  • One floating island
  • Made of endstone
  • Obsidian towers
  • Only mobs are Endermen and the Enderdragon
  • No clouds
  • Textured, dark, multicolored sky
  • Included and accessible in vanilla

The Sky Dimension

  • Very bright, sun is always at the zenith
  • Infinite
  • Made of overworld materials
  • No obsidian towers
  • Overworld passive mobs like chickens
  • Clouds below the islands
  • Lavender/blue Earthlike sky
  • Could only be accessed through mods

Nope, no differences here. None at all. Clearly the End and the Sky Dimension are exactly the same thing. 71.7.90.185 15:47, 16 June 2012 (UTC)

Dude above me, you deserve a medal. 184.1.103.140 20:16, 18 September 2012 (UTC) I'd say the differences, but somebody ninjaed me. Of course, there are a few differences he/she didn't count: The Ender:

  • Ender Crystals
  • The End of the game
  • No future content(????)
  • DRAGONS!:D

The Sky Dimension:

  • No Ender Crystals
  • Game Progress Stage Unknown
  • Future content unknown
  • No mobs other than Chickens, and the occasional Cow or, even more rarely, pigs.

A lot like the Aether[edit]

Hello! I somehow got onto this page and noticed how it was a lot like the Aether, both have floating islands, both mostly spawn bird mobs (for the Aether it's moas, for the Sky Dimension it's chickens). Could someone add this to the Trivia section please, as I am unnable to due to the fact that I do not have an account? Also, it looks similar to the Skylands from the popular Spyro game, Skylanders: Spyro's adventure.
