Conditions to spawn bats in a house?[edit]

Has anybody tested how big a room must be for the game to think of it as a cave, which would enable bat spawning? I'm playing with the though of getting myself bats into one of my cellars...--137.226.158.159 12:18, 21 September 2012 (UTC)

I've messed with this as well. I have yet to see a bat spawn in a player-made structure. I would also like to know if there's a light level requirement. --Kanegasi C 13:11, 21 September 2012 (UTC)
Mine is 21 on 15 and 3 high. It seems the light level has an limiting effect, since one spawned in a then unlit part of the room (lower than light level 9 or 8), after I placed torches no new bats spawned... i think i'll test it again 94.221.222.44 16:19, 23 September 2012 (UTC)
I can verify they WILL spawn in a house. It just has to be dark, with enough lit area outside that they don't have a lot of places to spawn. They appear anywhere within 32 blocks of the player, but only if it's dark enough to spawn enemies. It works even better in large buildings - I'm working on a project with a ~200 x 200 stadium and they were horrible pests while I was working on putting the lights in. --King Starscream 15:33, 18 October 2012 (UTC)

ruining mob spawners[edit]

how could these break mobspawners? 205.188.116.210 21:08, 21 September 2012 (UTC)

I'm not entirely sure what was meant by this, the only thing I can think of is that they are a drop-less and difficult to grind mob, which will reduce the area in which hostiles can spawn (as they cant spawn overlapping another entity) though this effect would seem incredibly minor at most Cultist O 21:17, 21 September 2012 (UTC)
Spawners will not spawn another mob if there are already a certain maximum number of the mob in the immediate area. Maybe the bats count towards reaching that maximum? 70.89.140.153 21:27, 21 September 2012 (UTC)
That would be interesting, but we really haven't seen any evidence of that so far. I think it is likely that the implication of grinder-nerfing came out of misunderstanding or wild speculation. It might be worth a bit more digging before we dismiss the idea though. Cultist O 23:12, 21 September 2012 (UTC)
I've removed it for now since there is no evidence that the mob was made to intentionally do that. For editors: Either test it and verify before adding, or don't add speculation/trivia into the article at all. --M0rphzone(talk) (*How to remove sidebar*) 00:52, 22 September 2012 (UTC)
Mob spawners only check for nearby mobs of the type they spawn. However, a large number of other mobs can prevent it from finding enough clear space to spawn anything. Bats, being small and often on the ceiling, probably won't cause that sort of interference. -- Orthotope 08:22, 22 September 2012 (UTC)

Despawning?[edit]

Do bats despawn? HotdogPi Come to my page! 01:57, 22 September 2012 (UTC)

Yes, they do. --☺ Sven ? ! 09:30, 22 September 2012 (UTC)
They work like Squids, or how most mobs used to before animals became persistent. --King Starscream 15:34, 18 October 2012 (UTC)

Farmland[edit]

Bats seem to revert farmland back to dirt. One spawned in my farming cellar and messed up 10 or so blocks until i got it ... 94.221.222.44 16:14, 23 September 2012 (UTC)

Spawn in caves?[edit]

I've never seen a bat spawn naturally (and I am on the snapshot.) How big does the cave have to be before one spawns? yoshidude56 16:27, 23 September 2012 (UTC)

They've spawned in every cave I've seen so far. Even in quite small ones. --☺ Sven ? ! 18:24, 23 September 2012 (UTC)
Can anybody check the game code? --87.102.84.99 17:58, 24 September 2012 (UTC)

BATMAN?[edit]

mabie their could be bats struck by lightning turning into batmen and and they would attack hostile mobs for you - october saturday 16th 2012-5:03 pm

No. --☺ Sven ? ! 12:35, 6 October 2012 (UTC)
YES (by the way ideas shouldn't go on pages but I made a page at http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/User_talk:Mcpantsonfire/New-ideas) Mcpantsonfire 18:28, 6 October 2012 (UTC)mcpantsonfire
It's the mob we deserve, but...not the one we need right now. ThesaurusRex84 22:32, 25 October 2012 (UTC)

I think batman would ruin minecraft. I think that minecraft should stay kinda realistic.Yoshi691 21:05, 11 February 2013 (UTC) It would be funny to have a mod that incorporates that, but it probably would be unlikely for Batman to appear because:

1) Bats rarely spawn outdoors.

2) Bats are fast and have a small hitbox.

3) Having the possibility of more than one Batman could cause problems.

4) If you put one superhero in a mod, people are going to want mods for all the superheroes, which would not be possible because Batman is the only well-known superhero that relates to a mob found in Minecraft.

That's about it. If you've found a way to get around those issues, let me know. Miraklemax 20:39, 27 April 2013 (UTC)

mistake?[edit]

the history section says they are now neutral but the rest of the artical still lists them as passive can someone changed this(which ever one is right thats why i'm not doing it)also some info about them(may have been added already)during a stream dinnerbone said that they will not drop any items90.203.27.36 23:22, 8 October 2012 (UTC)

They are passive. They will not attack you even if you attack them (in version 1.4.2). 99.3.35.15 04:20, 30 October 2012 (UTC)

Screenshots[edit]

I have a few screenshots, but I do not know how to add the images correctly without messing things up. Links: [1] [2]

I had to use links like that so as to not have full-sized screenshots filling up the page. Pyro1997 05:41, 13 October 2012 (UTC)

Bats spawn too much[edit]

I am tired of bats spawning in my house and other structures, especially in super flat world! Mojang needs to add an option to stop bats from spawning in our worlds. Ghoust9797 23:58, 25 October 2012 (UTC) ghoust9797

Reply: maybe you should light up your house then...

No, I agree. It's really annoying when you want to see how something will look unlit for, say, an adventure map, and some dark room is full to the brim with bats. 70.35.98.102 11:25, 19 January 2013 (UTC)
But! As annoying as they might be, I have a pet bat and I'm gonna keep him in my house until he despawns 'cause he's so cute! But bats are good for haunted houses that you might have on a server or a map or something; If you don't want them to die in the haunted house (a bit TOO scary) or the admin insists on keeping the difficulty peaceful, just spawn a ton of bats which might give the spooky effect without you being blamed for a death house disguised as a haunted house!

--Moodyberry 16:08, 15 March 2013 (UTC)

The thing is, I'm working on a castle, I have the difficulty set to peaceful (in singleplayer), but bats spawn regardless of difficulty, so I keep having to find and kill them. The only other way is to do /gamerule doMobSpawning false, which isn't useful if you want to turn off peaceful later. A "Turn Off Bats" function, maybe in options, would be really useful.--173.164.156.186 02:25, 13 April 2013 (UTC)

IKR! they always spawn everywhere in my town!!! 192.168.98.44 23:43, 11 July 2013 (UTC)

Bats and Zombies[edit]

I swear that I saw a zombie trying to chase a bat. The zombie was in attack mode, but stop stalking me and started chasing the bats. Once the bats were out of his way, he started after me again. Maybe Zombies are distracted by bats. Maybe, I'm imagining things. 99.3.35.15 10:03, 29 October 2012 (UTC)

Bats causing the game to crash[edit]

When in close proximity of bats, (about swinging distance), the game will freeze completely, forcing me to manually close the game, with a 'Java(TM) Platform SE Binary is not responding' message. It happens every single time I come close to bats.

I am using windows 7 with the latest Java version. I don't have a single mod installed. Anybody else having this problem? Anybody have any tips on solving said problem? 74.76.26.189

Flying East[edit]

Is there any evidence that bats tend to fly East, or did someone just see a few bats flying East and conclude that that's what they normally do? There seems to be no evidence in the code that they tend to fly East, although they do tend to fly down.31.53.173.83 17:37, 17 November 2012 (UTC)

I created an enclosed space and spawned around 100 bats, and I've noticed that they actually tend to fly south. I've done this three times, and each time I've seen a significant portion of the bats moving to the far south end of the area. I'd get more people to test this, but it definitely seems like they have a tendency to move south. -- 24.18.77.190 18:30, 29 January 2013 (UTC)

I have tested this in the past by spawning a ton of them in Superflat (holding down the spawn egg for a good 5 minutes), and none of them flew any further than 50 blocks north, south, or west of the initial spawn point. Flying around finding them, the group kept nudging east, and a handful of the first few spawned were found as far as 500 blocks east. The block numbers are estimates of what I can remember, but they all definitely wandered east. Kanegasi C 18:40, 29 January 2013 (UTC)

What type of mob are bats?[edit]

Passive mobs don't despawn, but hostile mobs don't spawn on peaceful difficulty. Are bats a new type of mob? I'm talking about in the code. Don't say it's passive just because it doesn't attack.HotdogPi ⑬㊲ 03:24, 3 December 2012 (UTC)

In short, yes. There are four lists of spawnable mobs: passive (including wolves), hostile (including ocelots), water (i.e., squid), and ambient (bats). Their behavior is most similar to squid, in that they're not aggressive and can despawn. -- Orthotope 04:16, 3 December 2012 (UTC)
What? No, ocelots are passive and don't attack you, untamed wolves are neutral and will attack you if you attack them, and the ones that attack you naturally are hostile. The wiki has six categories: passive, neutral, hostile, tameable, utility, and boss. Squids and bats are more special than the other ones, but they are still considered passive mobs. If someone can find coding to say otherwise, paste it here. 70.35.98.102 02:25, 20 January 2013 (UTC)
To clarify my above statement, that is according to the game code. When it comes to spawning random mobs, exactly four classes of mob are considered. The wiki has more categories because they are grouped by overall behavior, not just spawing conditions, and because those categories contain all mobs, including ones that don't spawn at random. -- Orthotope 08:39, 20 January 2013 (UTC)

Part of their behavior is not mentioned in the article.[edit]

I noticed while playing, that when trying to mine a block, when a bat flies through my crosshairs, my character stops mining and I have start breaking the block all over again. This is most noticeable when using insufficient equipment, since being interrupted halfway through a 10 second or longer mining attempt is much more annoying than a 1 second mining attempt, since a much more substantial amount of time is wasted. The simplest solution seems to be "kill the bats", but they are so cute I just throw up a door or a trap door as a humane option to stop them from dive bombing my face. I am thinking the intent was to put the bats in as minecraft's first "pest" creature type. Wiki Contributaar 16:00, 25 December 2012 (UTC)

Bat Spawning[edit]

Does anyone know exactly how dark it has to be for bats to spawn? "Dark enough" is not something that should be on the wiki, it should, at the very least, be changed to something along the lines of "the light level in which they spawn is currently unknown". 98.195.169.117 Anonymous

The infobox says that they spawn below y=63 in a light level of 7 or less, which is the same for hostile mobs. Remember to sign with 4 tildes, not 3, so people can see the date you posted. 70.35.98.102 02:47, 20 January 2013 (UTC)
Bats can also spawn in a 1x1 square with the side open which is too small for any other mob to generate in. If you see one hanging in a place, that is generally the spawn location unless you had one flying around already.76.180.157.2 23:54, 31 March 2013 (UTC)

Will a flaming bat light a player on fire?[edit]

This may be for a creative experimenter to fiddle with. I was in a cave that had lava, there was a bat flying around. I hit it with a pick, and the bat bounced near the lava catching on fire. It then flew for a few seconds before dying. I did not think to press F2.76.180.157.2 23:54, 31 March 2013 (UTC)

Behavior section about lava?[edit]

Can anyone prove/disprove this statement in Behavior?

Bats do not seem to care about lava, and if there are lava streams coming from the ceiling, they may fly into one and burn up. Most bats, however, are safe from lava, both because lava streams are uncommon and because lava gives off light, and bats spawn in the dark.

I've seen bats in caves die plenty of times by flying directly into lava, especially in ravines, where lava can spill down. Either way, I think this section needs revision. --Keithicus420 23:07, 7 August 2013 (UTC)

Count toward mob limit in an area?[edit]

I'n trying to get some horses to spawn in the only plains biome area I've found. I've killed all the pigs, cows and sheep (Holy crap there were a lot of pigs...) in the area, according to REI's minimap; I can see a number of fast moving and quickly direction changing mobs underground on the minimap, which I believe are bats... and NOTHING else has spawned in the area. Hostiles when it's dark, of course, some underground, (gorram creeper!) but no other non hostiles. Do they interfere with this? --StarChaser Tyger 10:54, 1 September 2013 (UTC)

No, bats have a separate cap. What radius have you cleared? If your plains biome is small, the neighboring biomes may still be in range. Also, even after such measures, animal spawning is slooow, so you need to hang out there quite a long time. --Mental Mouse 13:28, 1 September 2013 (UTC)

Video for bats[edit]

I think they should add a video for bats, tell me why they haven't done it. They added the Witch video, but not the bats'. Blessings,
