Mushrooms are fungi that grow and spread in dark areas.

Mushrooms can be instantly mined with anything.

Natural generation[edit]

Mushrooms naturally generate in poorly lit areas (light level of 12 or less), as well as in mushroom island biomes and the Nether.

Witch huts have a flower pot with a mushroom inside.

Huge mushrooms[edit]

Mining a huge mushroom block drops up to 2 mushrooms.

Shearing a mooshroom drops 5 red mushrooms.

Mushrooms can be planted and grown on blocks in light levels below 13 and not directly underneath the sky. If planted on mycelium or podzol, they can stay planted in any light level. Both brown and red mushrooms grow at the same rate regardless of light level.[1][2]

Besides being mined directly, mushrooms are dropped as items if:

  • the block below them falls, is moved, or destroyed;
  • a fluid flows over them;
  • it is above light level 12 and a block updates next to it.

Huge mushrooms[edit]

When bone meal is applied to a mushroom, the mushroom has a chance to grow into a huge mushroom, provided that it has enough space and that the light level is dark enough.

Mushrooms will spread randomly onto nearby blocks when in appropriate conditions. They will spread only if there are fewer than 5 mushrooms of the same type in 9×9×3 area.

Light source[edit]

Brown mushrooms emit a barely visible light level of 1.

0.0.20 Red and brown mushrooms added.
Mushrooms were a decorative item, having no crafting use and remaining in the ground when planted. Mushrooms could be placed on any block except another mushroom, and would remain planted when the block below them was removed.
Pigs had a chance of dropping red mushrooms and sheep dropped brown mushrooms.
0.24_SURVIVAL_TEST Consumption of a red mushroom healed 5 (Heart.svgHeart.svgHalf Heart.svg).
0.26 SURVIVAL TEST 8 Mushrooms now only spawn underground.
Consumption of a red mushroom causes 3 (Heart.svgHalf Heart.svg) damage to the player's health.
Mushrooms were generated in rare instances under trees or in the shadows of other floating continents in the "Floating" map type.
Red and brown mushrooms could not be eaten on their own, but could be crafted together with a bowl to yield mushroom stew.
1.2 With the addition of biomes and the dimly-lit Nether, mushrooms became a more common sight.
1.6 Mushrooms could be generated in the open when exploring during night, or under low-light conditions such as those found under trees or overhangs. If planted in direct sunlight or a light level higher than 12 they popped out of the ground. Several bug reports mentioned mushrooms growing on top of trees, but this was a very rare phenomenon.
Mushrooms were given an ability to spread in light levels under 13 onto any block touching their own, including blocks located upwards and downwards diagonally. Mushrooms could be placed on any solid, non-transparent, block including pumpkins, workbenches, furnaces, and chests.
1.8 Mushrooms' spreading ability was severely restricted - a mushroom would only spread if there were fewer than 5 mushrooms of the same type in a 9×9×3 area around the original mushroom.
Bone meal can be used on mushrooms to grow new huge mushrooms.
Mushrooms could also be found more easily in the new swamp biomes.

  • Red mushrooms bear a strong resemblance to Amanita muscaria mushrooms, more commonly known as fly agarics. Consuming them will cause delirium and hallucinogenic effects if their psychoactive properties have not been reduced by parboiling. Similarly, red mushrooms in the Minecraft Survival Test damaged the player when eaten.
