Organization of This Page & Instructions

This page is for bugs that occur in the client or server of an unmodded Minecraft game. If you think a bug you have found in a modded version is not the result of the mods you have added, please be sure to reproduce it in an unmodded game before posting it here.

When reporting or commenting on a bug or annoyance, please sign your remarks with ~~~~. This is a deliberate exception to the usual wiki conventions; normally you should only add signatures to content on talk pages.

Please do not spontaneously delete an issue report or comment unless it is patent nonsense submitted by someone who has not logged in. Try to contact the submitter by user-talk first and tell them about your concerns. Almost all genuine, active submitters will be co-operative. Always assume good faith.

If you're unsure of an issue, it's good practice to post about it on the talk page to see whether others can reproduce it. Make sure you're testing the bug in the correct version (for this page, that's snapshot 12w16a) with no mods installed. Also, make sure to proofread your issue report before submitting it; unintelligible issue reports come off as inconsiderate and disrespectful. Finally, please determine which game mode(s) your issue appears in, and flag it with the appropriate label(s).[1] (Also, note that if, for example, a minor annoyance appears in both single-player and multiplayer, and in both creative and survival modes, you should label it as [A] , not [A] [SP] [MP] [Su] [Cr] .)

Please make sure issues are given the correct category, type, and priority: redstone issues go in the Redstone section, problems with mobs go into the Mobs section, and so on. List crash bugs [!!] first, then major bugs [!] , then minor ones [X] . Annoyances go into the Annoyances subsection, with major ones [A!] before minor ones [A] . Issues that have been marked as fixed or skipped are moved to the Fixed/Skipped section. Issues that Mojang cannot reproduce should be left in their original place.

Please sign all issue reports and comments by typing ~~~~ (three tildes; tilde may be found above Tab ↹ on USA keyboards, and to the right of @ on British keyboards).

There is no need to place bullet points before issue labels. Use bullet points only for comments. Be sure to leave a single totally blank line before each new issue (but not before comments), unless the issue appears directly beneath a header.

If a new version of Minecraft is released, create that page with {{subst:Known bugs}}. Any changes made to this header should also be made to this template.

Note: Please don't let debates about whether something is or is not a bug or annoyance get out of hand. Similarly, don't clog bug reports with discussions of workarounds or possible fixes. If ever a bug or annoyance ends up with more than about 10-12 lines of follow-up comments, please move the entire follow-up discussion to the talk page and put in a cross-reference to the discussion under the original bug.

The default issue type is minor bug; you can produce this label with the shorthand {{bl}}.



[!!] Windows [?] all modes: When I push the Button Open Texturepack Folder Minecraft crashes. My System is Win 7 64bit, java 7u3 64bit, lwjgl2.8.3. It is a fresh Minecraft installation and a newly installed java.

  • Can confirm with the same specs. Game does not crash, but freezes without an error. Mustek 22:14, 19 April 2012 (UTC)
  • Yeah you are right, I used the wrong words. It freezes without an error.

[!!] On SMP, updating from 12w15a to 12w16a (Java 1.5, PowerMac G5 Quad) the following error is displayed in the console when players try to log in (client also updated to 12w16a):

Additional detail: the player remains connected according to the server, even though the client gets an error also. Also seeing the following error when players are eventually disconnected:

[X] More info on a long-standing bug: I was stationary (or possibly still moving very slowly) in a boat. Had traveled by boat for several days. One of my tame wolves, which had also been swimming for some time, teleported near to me then swam closer and 'bumped' the boat. Which instantly killed me. I was aware that you colliding with a mob in a boat could be fatal, but I didn't appreciate that mobs touching you when you were stationary could have the same effect. Flagging as major as this bug can kill instantly without warning. 21:39, 20 April 2012 (UTC)

  • I did some experimenting and couldn't get any pets to collide with my boat in a way that would kill me. However, on one occasion I was damaged by half a heart from a collision. It seems really random, but if fatal collisions happen they don't happen often. It's not game breaking and doesn't happen regularly, so I'm downgrading it for now. --Mattrition 20:44, 23 April 2012 (UTC)

[X] The player's directional arrow on maps is not properly aligned, and is off 22.5 degrees clockwise. When facing north, the arrow will point north-northeast. TorchicBlaziken 20:54, 23 April 2012 (UTC)

[X] Sometimes loading a world causes you to spawn at underground when you were above ground or vice versa. Presumably, the horizontal co-ordinates are the same.

[X] If the player saves and exits a world while in a boat or minecart, when they reload the world, they will fall out. Not tested in multiplayer.

[X] [MP] [?] When there is a thunderstorm in multiplayer the visual effect of thunder is absent.

[X] [MP] When rain/snow starts on a server, then no starting animation is done. For reference, in single player downfall starts by slowly fading in. The same applies when weather stops.

[X] [SP] When the Bonus Chest is enabled, if Minecraft populates that block space with another block, the chest is destroyed and the items in it become drops. This is especially susceptible to snow cover and jungle undergrowth. --Moxxy 22:20, 21 April 2012 (UTC)

  • In snow-covered areas, there are no Bonus Chest, nor the items from it. 13:12, 20 April 2012 (UTC)
  • As a reproducible example noted elsewhere, the seed "walruswalruswalrus" spawns you in a lovely snow biome without a chest. --Mattrition 16:31, 25 April 2012 (UTC)

[X] Glass panes do not drop themselves when harvested, even when using silk touch tools.

  • You can harvest glass blocks with silk touch, so I see no good reason you shouldnt be able to harvest glass

  • Is this an intended feature? I mean, it doesn't have to be, because in terms of functionality it does not hinder gameplay really at all. But I do find it annoying. Especially when I'm placing blocks and I place a block on top of the redstone. I just turns on. If that is supposed to happen, well.   • It is intended for redstone ore to glow when right clicked

  • I've split your bug into two for clarity purposes. I am unable to reproduce this issue, the block returns to its unpowered state just fine, regardless of how it is activated. -- EvilSeph 04:33, 24 April 2012 (UTC)
  • Hmm, maybe it's just me being impatient. However, I DO notice that, if the ore should return to unpowered state, that the ore does definitely stay on longer than if activated by walking on it. If you are having trouble reproducing, I recommend doing EXACTLY what I did when I first noticed it. I was placing rails on top of the block, and it turned off. Upon removing the rails, the ore seems to stay on forever. I have to break it to make it stop glowing. Try that maybe and see if it works then? It might be a flag problem somewhere in the code.--Starport592 11:46, 25 April 2012 (UTC)

  • Can't you give yourself portal blocks? /give 119?
  • You can, but they will not place if you do so outside of the Overworld. There's a flag that says that if the Ender Dragon's defeated, End Portals won't decay, but this only affects End Portals in the world, and it does not enable you to place them. I suppose this could be fixed by allowing the placement of End Portals in any dimension, like you can with the Nether Portal block. TorchicBlaziken 00:47, 22 April 2012 (UTC)

[A] Grass blocks under upside-down stairs become dirt.

[A] [Cr] If a block is broken under a placeable item, such as a redstone torch, the item will yield a drop. This has happened since creative mode was introduced.


[F] [X] When pressing the Pick Block button on a Huge Mushroom block of any kind, top or stem, it will give you a stem block, unlike shears would.



[X] Boats can be placed on land. They act as if they are in water, complete with blue spray particles, but will only move very slowly. --Mattrition 21:09, 23 April 2012 (UTC)

[X] Mushrooms can't be placed in moonlight. It's probably worth mentioning that in moonlight the debug menu says that sl is 15.

I think he means that when you are feeding your pets, you are trying to eat the food as well. This bug has been in the game since alpha

World Generator


[X] World generation is often creating very large amounts of chunk errors. (cheats and chest enabled, vanilla) -- Kittani1977 -- Kittani1977
  • looks like the old worldgen-version-difference problem, you took an old world and loaded it with the new version. but the the worldgen wasn't modified it shouldn't appear. --MG127 16:39, 20 April 2012 (UTC)
  • These were fresh vanilla generated worlds. I always generate a few dozen random ones every time. It's possible some of the unmentioned "minor bugfixes" could have introduced a chunk load error, or generation error. -- Kittani1977
  • Another important thing to note is that if you take the seed and re-generate the world it will often come up correctly. This was after several times generating a world, looking around for a minute, then deleting and making a new one. My guess is save file handling issues. -- Kittani1977

Mobs & NPCs & Animals


[!] [MP] Mob movements are glitchy in SMP, leading to the following issues:

  1. In a pen farm animals will appear to jump over their fences, and wander out. If the server does not shut down, they will be pulled back into their pen eventually. They can also "jump" onto the top of the fence. Keybounce 08:24, 5 April 2012 (UTC)
  2. Captured animals (also mobs) seemingly appears outside 1 block thick 2-3 block high room, mainly the roof (like they were getting out). If there is no roof they appear top of 2-3 block high wall. You can collide with these glitching animals. (pics from 12w04a) --

[X] [MP] Chickens occasionally spawn inside ground leaves in jungle biomes and are stuck there until you dig them out. So far, this has only been an issue with chickens. --Mattrition 17:59, 25 April 2012 (UTC)

Main Menu/GUI

[A] In More World Options (when creating a new world), if fullscreen is entered (or windowed mode), the buttons for structure generation, allow cheats, etc. disappear and 'Done' is replaced with 'More World Options.'

[A] The launcher buttons are black text on brown background if you're using Windows Classic ( This has been like this for years, of course, but it didn't stop being irritating.

[X] [MP] The "/time set night" command sets the time to 12500 ticks in multiplayer. So it does not actually switch to night (18000 ticks/6PM) ~~CasVg2012

[A!] The /Tab ↹ were unusual. Why don't you use /help for help like in multiplayer?

[A!] The /Tab ↹ is not recognized in Macintosh, hence making tabbing through commands useless

[A] New xp command is limited to 5000 xp at a time even though such limit is not connected to any level cap or similiar thing. --Trinistr

[A] The /gamemode command doesn't work in SMP if it is being used on someone other than yourself. For example; typing "/gamemode <random username of other player> 1" does not work like it used to. It says "<random username of other player> is not a valid number". This is annoying if I want to change the gamemode of one of the players on my own.

  • That is because the syntax has changed. It's /gamemode <mode> [player] instead of /gamemode <player> <mode> Dinnerbone 13:43, 21 April 2012 (UTC)


[F] [X] [MP] When using the "say" command in the server console, instead of displaying your message, it displays, "Usage: /say <message ...> even though the message is delivered.

Graphical & Lighting

[!] macOS At night entities such as the player, mobs, and items dropped on the floor are the only things that get darker. This leaves a night sky over a daytime landscape. Also torches, glowstone, lava, etc. don't provide any light so the only way to light up your home is to have the "sunlight", from night not working outside, shine in through a block marked as transparent. An example of this is being in a box full of torches and still being in complete darkness. This makes caves perpetually dark and impossible to light up without digging all the way back to the surface above what you want to see. The lighting has been this way since 1.8 at which point, in the version (snapshot/prerelease?) which allowed you to quickly cycle the sun and moon, I did so to see how it worked, the lighting worked great for the first night but it hasn't worked since. --0hyeah132 01:27, 24 April 2012 (UTC)

  • This feature has been around before this snapshot, I think it's trying to indicate the fur of the wolves are wet. -Dorkster 09:39, 24 April 2012 (UTC)
