Heads-up display

From Minecraft Wiki
Jump to: navigation, search
The HUD and all its components.
All the bars existing in the game, the health bar, the armor bar, the oxygen bar, the hunger bar and the experience bar.

The heads-up display or HUD appears on screen while the Player is in the game. It is superimposed on his or her view of the game world.

The HUD consists of the user's health, hunger and experience bars, the hotbar, as well as a crosshair that designates the currently focused on block or entity. The armor condition bar appears above the health bar if the player is wearing armor. The oxygen bar will display above the hunger bar if the player is underwater. In multiplayer, chat is part of the HUD, in the bottom left corner, showing the last few things spoken. This can be expanded with T. The HUD also contains, if applicable, the unlicensed copy note. In Creative mode, the health, hunger, experience and armor bars are hidden.

In the Options menu, GUI scale changes the size of the HUD and GUI between "large", "normal" and "small". Small is only recommended for large or low-resolution screens. There is also an "auto" setting, which will change the size of the HUD and GUI depending on the size of the game window. The "auto" setting is the default.

Players can toggle the HUD, the vignette effect on fancy graphics, and the dark lining around the block you are aiming at on the computer edition by pressing the F1 key.

A less detailed debug screen can be added to the HUD by pressing F3. A detailed debug screen can be added to the HUD by pressing ⇧ Shift+F3, which shows details but fills up the HUD. On some computers, all three commands require you to hold fn first.

All elements of the HUD can be changed with Resource Packs.

[edit] Hotbar

A partially filled hotbar with dirt selected

The hotbar is a selection bar which appears on the bottom of the screen. It is where you store and select commonly used items. It is not your complete inventory. When the player switches an item in hand by mouse wheel or 1 - 9, its name is shown above the experience level for a short period of time.

Upon mounting a horse in Survival or Adventure mode, the hunger and oxygen bars are replaced by the horse’s health. It uses a slightly different heart texture than the player’s health bar. The experience bar is replaced by the horse jump bar. Also, when riding a pig, its health bar appears and replaces your hunger bar, but your experience bar remains the same.

[edit] Trivia

  • In Pocket Edition, the expanding ring that displays when breaking blocks and the crosshair shows what it is displayed over in inverted colours, unlike other editions where the crosshair is shown white.
    • To invert all colours in iOS, you can go to the settings menu and turn on invert colors. When this is on, the block breaking and the crosshair displays what's under it in normal colours.
